Sad and sweet how many people are saying that at first, they thought the original meme was about the city being dangerous FOR homeless people rather than because of homeless people. But no, there is an attitude that Portland has been "trashed and ruined" and is now a dangerous crime-ridden wasteland entirely because slightly more homeless people are visible than they supposedly were a decade ago. It is, however, the cleanest and safest city I've ever lived in or walked in or even visited, and it's a pretty well established fact that homelessness is an epidemic in every single city in America. What troglodytes are really angry about is that Portland isn't immediately rounding up, arresting and punishing the homeless as severely as some other cities are, which incidentally has not reduced crime in those cities, because it's not actually unhoused people personally responsible for increases of crime, but the record poverty striking everyone up to what's left of the middle class. And even if I were someone bothered by the sight of homeless tents........they are rarer here than a lot of other places. By far. I grew up near Baltimore, I've lived in Central Florida, I've been to New Jersey, Philadelphia, Orlando and others. In most of those places you will absolutely always hear distant sirens at all hours, sometimes gunshots, and there are places you absolutely must never walk at night. Portland is not a fucking SHADOW of that. It has violence like any city does, but compared to Baltimore, even the Baltimore I lived near 20 years ago, Portland may as well be a cozy little cartoon elf village. Everyone who whines about it being trashy or dangerous is either an outsider who swallowed a big fat fib from some right wing vlogger who also doesn't live here, or they're the pearl clutching portland millionaires who just place themselves above everyone else and look down on the rest of the city. Today, after 15 months of torment, displacement, and living in constant fear, my family and I find ourselves in an unbearably difficult situation. Life has become a daily struggle, and everything we once knew has turned to darkness. The impact of the genocidal war against Gaza has torn us apart, leaving us facing hunger, disease, and a deep sense of loss. Most devastating of all, my sister and I have been unable to attend school, robbing us of our dreams for a better future.

Now, as we prepare to return to northern Gaza, where our home once stood, we carry with us the immense weight of loss. Our home is destroyed, and the emotional and physical scars are deep. The pain is unbearable for my family and me, but despite it all, we have not lost hope. We still dare to dream of a brighter tomorrow—a future where we can rebuild what was taken from us. My personal dream is to continue my education and achieve the goals that have always been within my reach, but now it seems so far away.

However, the road to recovery is long and steep. The cost of rebuilding our lives is overwhelming. Everything we once relied on is either gone or too expensive to restore. The price of basic necessities—food, medicine, shelter—has skyrocketed. The infrastructure is shattered, and even getting the most basic supplies has become a daily challenge. The war has left us with nothing, and with the added financial strain, continuing our education feels impossible without help.

This is why I am reaching out. My family and I need your support now more than ever. We ask not for pity, but for your compassion, your prayers, and your belief in a brighter future for us. We need your help to lift us out of the darkness and give us a chance to rebuild. I am Ahmed from Gaza, 26 years old. I stand before you as a person trying to support my family of 7: me, my father, my mother and my sisters, in our miserable circumstances, which we live in after the occupation launched the war on Gaza. We were displaced from our home and it was completely destroyed. We are now living in shelters. Due to the circumstances and low income, we are unable to provide the necessary benefits such as food and drink due to the crazy increase in prices. Thus, my source of livelihood has been destroyed, but it has been completely destroyed, as we are no longer entitled to work; and we expect to live in miserable conditions in the shelters. It is difficult for me to find the words to describe what we face every day in the shelters; without food, medicine or clean drinking water; with the oppression, helplessness, psychological pressures, doubts and daily shocks caused by everything around us and the inability to care for our loved ones. The fear of danger, disease and death never leaves us.

Now, I find myself in this difficult situation, and I humbly ask for your help to save the lives of my family, especially my father and mother, by getting us out of Gaza to Egypt and building a new life outside Gaza or helping us get money to buy the necessities that we may be able to afford. Asking for help is not easy, but we had no choice because we want to survive and strive to rebuild our shattered lives. We are very grateful for any help you can offer, no matter how small, as your help will go a long way in alleviating our suffering. I hope you will share my story with your family and friends.”
