We all think a lot about Maedhros’ relationships with his parents and his brothers since they loom so large in his life, but I think there are really interesting contrasts and parallels between Maedhros and Finwë and Míriel:
Finwë held himself unkinged by the Valar against his will; Maedhros chose to give the crown to Fingolfin.
Finwë was a great friend of Elwë; Maedhros was not, and even made war on his kingdom after he was dead.
Finwë wanted to have more children after Fëanor; Maedhros never had children, but he ended up with children anyway.
Míriel was known for her strong will and her tendency to make her words a law unto themselves; Maedhros swore the Oath.
Míriel chose to die; Maedhros begged Fingon to slay him and he later cast himself into a chasm of fire.
Míriel, and of course Fëanor, were well known for the beautiful things they created; Maedhros did achieve some great things, like the alliances he formed, but he was mostly remembered for what he destroyed.

I'm out of the blue here but why do Tolkien fans hate Rings Of Power? How is it damaging his work and legacy?
We don't hate it because it's damaging Tolkien's work or legacy, which stand on their own merits. We hate it because it's an awful adaptation that treats his world and characters horribly. We hate it because it's made by a company that utterly betrays Tolkien's values and showrunners who have arrogantly compared themselves to him as if they're on his level. Not only that, ROP is being shoved down our throats: it's all over online spaces, it's mentioned in Tolkien-related news articles that have nothing to do with it, and ROP images have even been plastered on the covers of Tolkien's books just to make more money for Amazon. I have more than a few criticisms of Peter Jackson's films, but they all pale in comparison to the criticisms I have of this dumpster fire of a show and the company that made it. ROP has tried to present itself as diverse, but it actually has extremely regressive writing and tokenistic casting, not to mention abhorrent labor practices because it's made by fucking Amazon. Its plotlines and dialogue and internal consistency are shit. Despite an absurdly high budget, its production value is also shit. Even if it were a standalone fantasy series that had nothing to do with Tolkien and we weren't comparing it to canon, the whole thing is embarrassingly, sickeningly bad. at this point i really can't even figure out what i'm most scared about. the military being deployed against protesters? sliding back into a high emissions climate change scenario that will accelerate species extinctions and human suffering? inevitably an attempt to gut the endangered species act again? RFK Jr being in charge of vaccines? a stacked supreme court? all of the shadiest, most violent and corrupt politician dudebros replacing qualified government officials at every level in order to demolish any rule of law or accountability for crimes committed by the president? more mass shootings? xenophobic violence reaching a peak? border wall 2 electric boogaloo?
here are some others: trump restarts nuclear testing, setting off a global arms race, destroying all arms control progress, and poisoning the environment for thousands of years? mass deportation of immigrants and the violence and misery that ensues? weaponization of the justice system against political opponents? abortion further restricted across the country and you can't even travel to get one? all criminal justice reform blocked? trans healthcare made illegal? no fault divorce ended? state department funding gutted? all aid to Ukraine cut off? dictators emboldened across the world? religion forced into US classrooms, along with republicans' revisionist history? muslim ban 2.0? no more elections? literal eugenicists in office?
NOAA being shut down while natural disasters worsen. More food safety issues as he cuts even MORE "red tape." Accelerated loss of life in Gaza and Ukraine as he throws his support to the invaders. Attempts to outlaw birth control and nullify gay marriages. Dismantling of the public school system. More gerrymandering and rigging elections to try to ensure they can never be voted out of power. Privatization of public services. Criminalization of protests & homelessness, plus mass detentions, feeding for-profit prisons. More attacks on healthcare. Opening up federal land to exploitation. Slashed regulations for corporations & housing construction which will inevitably lead to accidents & deaths.
