this is one of those polls that's an awkward combination of "knowledge check" and "what is your personal interpretation of ambiguous/contradictory canon," and i won't say much more about it here so as not to bias results, but i think it is a genuinely interesting question

Oh this is INTERESTING (and oh god you just made me have to scroll through Final Crisis) because the timeline on how everything lines up here is super unclear, publication order is all over the place, and stories get a bit contradictory here. This is a period when you have to go by internal chronology markers rather than strict publication order because it’s a nightmare.

Because Kon and Bart officially return to the present timeline in Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds #5, I think? Where they specifically reunite with both the Teen Titans AND Titans teams in Titans Tower. And Tim is present, wearing his Robin costume, and finds out they’re back here…however later timeline stories like Adventure Comics #3 have been read by some fans as Tim not realising Kon is back until DURING his hunt for Bruce, and even thinking he’s hallucinating Kon during the hunt.

In terms of where Legion of Three Worlds fits into Final Crisis, it’s generally placed in the timelines as happening prior to Final Crisis #4 (despite being published over 6 months after it – Final Crisis #4 is an October 2008 title and Legion of Three Worlds #5 is July 2009).

Now. The big questions are ‘when does Bruce disappear as far as Tim is concerned’ and ‘when does Bruce end up in the timestream’.

Bruce’s ‘last’ appearance in the Bat titles in Gotham during Batman R.I.P. is…Batman #681? When he disappears off page as far as the Batfam and Batman Inc characters are concerned. Heart of Hush conceptually takes place AFTER this, in my memory of things, and Dick and Tim in that already think Bruce is ‘missing’ but are not necessarily sure he’s dead.

However subsequent to this disappearance from the Bat books, Bruce is very much interacting with the Justice League in the opening few issues of Final Crisis – he’s there for J’onn’s funeral, for instance. He goes ‘missing’ in terms of the wider hero community as of Final Crisis #3.

In Final Crisis #6, Bruce has his fight with Darkseid and is hit by the Omega beam that ‘kills’ him/sending him tumbling through time. (This is a January 2009 title)

  • In terms of strict publication order and how fans found things out: Bruce ‘dies’ before Kon returns
  • In terms of the best read of official internal DC chronology: Kon returns before Bruce ‘dies’
  • In terms of where Tim is emotionally to my mind: Tim believes Bruce has gone missing BEFORE Kon returns, however Dick and Tim are not informed by Superman that Bruce is dead until AFTER Kon is back.
  • If you want to read Adventure Comics #3 as Tim and Kon’s reunion: Tim doesn’t think Kon has returned until AFTER he leaves Gotham and becomes Red Robin

I think in my personal conception of how the timeline functions, I put Kon’s return before Tim finds out Bruce is dead, but I admit the interpretation that Tim doesn’t realise Kon’s back until he’s already left Gotham is extremely seductive in terms of drama and storytelling possibilities, and emotionally Tim is very much in EVERYONE AROUND ME DIES I CANNOT LOSE ANYONE ELSE mode as of Red Robin #1, even though he intellectually knows Steph, Kon AND Bart have all come back to life.

btw now is the best time to keep boycotting. the israeli economy has never been weaker. don't stop the protests or the demands for divestment. keep supporting organisations like the Hind Rajab Foundation and the Accountability Archive. ofc don't stop boosting and donating to Palestinians as Gaza is still uninhabitable.

enjoy this moment but the work has not ended

to be honest there has never been a fictional character i’ve actually wanted to date. like. i want them to date each other. i don’t want myself as a person to be involved in this scenario whatsoever. what would i add to this narratively? what’s my thematic purpose in the narrative? immersion breaking.
