Fandom tarots are kind of a tightrope act for me.
On the one hand, I do get annoyed when characters are clearly being assigned to arcana based on what the artist imagines each card represents based purely on the name of the card in question. (e.g., "well, this character is Death because they killed a guy, this character is the Devil because they're kind of nasty", and so forth.)
Oh the other hand, being too faithful about replicating the visual symbolism of a particular deck – whether it's the Marseilles or the Rider-Waite or what-have-you – can bump into the problem that those symbols are the product of a particular interpretive tradition, and in turn, of a particular religious and philosophical worldview which likely isn't shared by the source material; basically, instead of fucking up the meanings of the cards, we're now implicitly reading against the text of the media that this particular fandom tarot is based on.
This isn't necessarily a bad thing – I love a good countertextual reading as much as the next pretentious nerd – but in some cases I have to assume for the sake of my own equilibrium that this attention to detail is aping the forms without understanding the substance, because the alternative is contemplating the possibility that someone out there has successfully constructed a Catholic reading of Homestuck.
Forget about torturing your blorbos, putting them through the ringer. I'm putting my blorbo in perfectly ordinary, pleasant situations. Their tortured personality will cause them anguish anyway, making an absolutely mundane scene into the most dramatic, agony filled affair as though the world is ending and it's all their fault
I think in progressive spaces, the term "white" is widely used to mean "culturally middle class". And while I would prefer people just say "culturally middle class", because it's more accurate, "white" is a term that gets used widely for this idea (especially in America—I wonder why that could be...). Anyway, you will understand a lot of social justice discourse better if you understand that this is actually what people mean when they talk about "white feminism", "white leftism", and so on a good chunk of the time.
This is the post from back in 2022 that got white nationalist anon so mad at me. This is the post. This post. Of all my posts this is the one that like, struck a nerve with him to such a degree that he's messaged me almost daily for two years. I have to say I don't really get it.
Finantial writing is often seen as apolitical, or objective, because it involves so much math.
Which is like saying your body is non-biological, because your blood follows the laws of physics.
this is true but also like physics, you need to know the math to meaningfully say things about the heady disputes of theory. a physicist is not always right, but in order to disagree with them on matters deriving directly from physics, you have to know the math! so i guess the question is whether economics is more like biology, which derives from physics but in such a complicated way that its less effective to know the underlying math, or more like physics (or maybe chemistry?) where the math is really important
The haters are not precisely wrong about all this but we really need more people who make the logical leap to "that could be me if only I tried harder to express my critical gender theory with differential equations"
Fascinating to learn Portland isn't actually that leftist, because my mom keeps trying to get me to visit it more with her because, according to her, it's very queer, but I always feel somewhat out of place there
Oh it’s extremely queer. But despite what this website thinks, queer is not leftist and leftist is not queer.
They are two things that frequently correlate, but there is no guarantee that queers here will be leftists. I’ve had too many queer coworkers complain about homelessness, graffiti, fentanyl use, etc.
Everyone wants to believe that because someone shares one in group they share all the in groups but that just isn’t usually the case. It’s why coalition building is important. It’s why you have to hang out with people who are different than you.
i'm trying to prove a point to my mom
reblog if you love killing and eating innocent civilians
in the 20th century you could make a career out of a book and a couple popular essays and then just coast on being vaguely sexy for the rest of your life. that's not an option for today's youth
I feel like we need a massive public education campaign to inform people that "natural" and "healthy" are two completely different words with separate meanings
Former military service is the strongest factor in predicting who plans violent terrorist attacks in the US (when compared to all extremists), more so than mental health problems
Veterans make up 8% of the US population but 25% of those who plotted violent terrorist attacks from 1990-2022.
I can imagine the causality here going in both directions: serving in the military might make someone more prone to extremist violence, and being prone to extremist violence might make someone more likely to serve in the military. It could also be something else entirely: people in the military receive training that could theoretically be useful in planning a terrorist attack, so veterans probably perceive the barrier to entry for planning such an attack to be lower than non-veterans do.
Recruitment efforts within the military by extremist groups is another important factor. Of the 170 former military plotters in this sample, 41% were categorized as anti-government/militia extremists, 39% were categorized as white supremacist/nativist extremists, and 14% were categorized as Islamist extremists (individual plotters can be included in multiple groups). A variety of other motivations make up the remainder (anti-abortionists, black nationalists, conspiracists, incels, various etc., and in last place, anarchists/anti-capitalists). Overall, about 74% were linked to the far-right.
