What I mean about being cold…
Yesterday at noon I called Mom, like usual, but because of the cold I read to her for the living room. The heater I have had been running 24hrs a day for several days. The temperature where I was sitting was….
46F.
(I keep a thermometer by the computer, out curiosity so I can go “geez, no wonder I’m…” )
(Oh, and the important thing is to keep the pipes from freezing. It’s where it can do that job, which it manages. Me avoiding hypothermia while getting dressed in the morning works out too, but it’s not places for my comfort)
Now generally I was okay. I was wearing many laters…insulated underwear, three sweat shirts, my warm coat, etc. And because I have to wear those ankle braces I always have on four pair of socks (three of them thick) (yes, even in summer)
Mom was having an amazing day. Over three hours of talking snd reading!
Over three hours. Sitting. Still. With my hands out there exposed holding a phone and a book.
When the call was over my fingers wouldn’t even work! I couldn’t hold things or pick up things. You should have
I had a LOT I had to rush out to do for the animals with these useless fingers. I couldn’t put it off while I thawed because it had to be done before it really got dark, and before the animals could get too cold too. It was below freezing and stuff I did couldn’t be done wearing gloves. **
So, last night I needed to sew patches on my jeans. ( I’ve reached the “OMG, do I have anything without holes?” stage of being broke) I didn’t even try.***
**Sadly gloves are the weak point in my winter gear. I live in the south and the gloves they sell here are crap. I guess in a world where folks go from heated house to heated car to heated job, and only have a couple weeks of proper cold a year they don’t need them. I used to have good ones, but they got lost in the moving stuff post floor collapse frenzy. Now I can’t afford to order new ones. Just layering crappy gloves doesn’t work when you need finger dexterity.
Basically, now that I’m up and the day is cold, I quite literally won’t be warm again until I’m snuggled up in bed. Past midnight, probably, if I forget to light the hot water heater early enough again…
*** I did sculpt, but that’s different. It doesn’t take near as long and I can move around more while I work. I started out sculpting while standing outside on the ramp, and while that was years ago I still don’t need to be as still. Besides, I like sculpting and really HATE sewing.
