oh my god, there's whole books series that ALREADY do that. Have they never heard of the No Fear series published by Sparknotes? It puts a plain everyday english translation on the opposite page from the original text, plus character lists with descriptions and helpful commentary.

LQG and touch telepathy

I made an offhand reference to this in another thread, but the idea actually stuck with me --

Liu Qingge as a touch telepath. He can read people's thoughts, but only when he's directly touching them.

For whatever combination of reasons and weird education, Liu Qingge is not aware that he has this ability -- or rather, he's not aware that this is an unusual ability to have. From his perspective, it's simply a matter of understanding through fighting! People are honest when fighting in a way that they aren't when just standing around using words, for some fucking reason. When he first meets someone and wants to get to know them better, he will challenge them to a spar, since from his perspective that's the best way to find out what they really think.

(He doesn't associate this with hugging since that's mostly only his mother and sister, who are already pretty honest in their dealings with him; he thinks they just get extra talkative during hugs. Same with doctors lecturing him during treatment; yeah, tell me what you REALLY think, Mu Faya.)

What this means is that when he encounters Shen Yuanqiu for the first time in the Lingxi Caves during his qi deviation, he got a front row seat to SQQ's monologue of surprise and lamentations over his attractiveness, which was very, very, very confusing to him. Because he'd heard Shen Jiu's thoughts plenty of times before, when they'd clashed in the past, and they were very different.

He really wants to challenge Shen Qingqiu to spar at first opportunity, mostly because he wants to get back into Shen Qingqiu's head to figure out what the hell is going on -- but then Shen Qingqiu gets hit with Without-A-Cure, instead. And then, of all people, Liu Qingge gets picked as the one to clear Shen Qingqiu's meridians...

sj being spiteful, and showing tlj all the fucked up things humanity has done and can be capable of--always challenging, questioning, and contradicting the fanciful raving tlj is prone to do. tlj seeing all this, disheartened but quietly unsurprised. he has lived much longer than sj, and knows enough that sentient beings--demonic or not--are bound to commit atrocities. he acknowledges sj's point, but also brings up the fact that good still exists. "if we were to only love things--and beings, stop giving me that look--that are wholly good, then how will we ever love? what in this world is actually pure? demons despise your kind too, we kill you and our own, and yet i love my brethren regardless. can i not do the same for humanity? can i not hold hope for change, for things to become better? how will this change come if i do not hope first?"

if i were to write this in fic form--99.99% chance i wont im sorry--each chapter would cover different ethical discourses, and have the two explore different philosophical stances. these guys are literature nerds, theyd be capable of it. AND, theyre also action prone characters, so theyre gonna get into a lottt of hijinks
