If you're feeling anxious or depressed about the climate and want to do something to help right now, from your bed, for free...

Start helping with citizen science projects

What's a citizen science project? Basically, it's crowdsourced science. In this case, crowdsourced climate science, that you can help with!

You don't need qualifications or any training besides the slideshow at the start of a project. There are a lot of things that humans can do way better than machines can, even with only minimal training, that are vital to science - especially digitizing records and building searchable databases

Like labeling trees in aerial photos so that scientists have better datasets to use for restoration.

Or counting cells in fossilized plants to track the impacts of climate change.

Or digitizing old atmospheric data to help scientists track the warming effects of El Niño.

Or counting penguins to help scientists better protect them.

Those are all on one of the most prominent citizen science platforms, called Zooniverse, but there are a ton of others, too.

Oh, and btw, you don't have to worry about messing up, because several people see each image. Studies show that if you pool the opinions of however many regular people (different by field), it matches the accuracy rate of a trained scientist in the field.

--

I spent a lot of time doing this when I was really badly injured and housebound, and it was so good for me to be able to HELP and DO SOMETHING, even when I was in too much pain to leave my bed. So if you are chronically ill/disabled/for whatever reason can't participate or volunteer for things in person, I highly highly recommend.

Next time you wish you could do something - anything - to help

Remember that actually, you can. And help with some science.

Yup, these are actually *really* important. And a small bit of work helps, so it’s doable even if you’re snowed under with survival work or in too much pain to concentrate for longer periods.

It’s multiply-checked by more than one person, so don’t worry about fucking it up because your concentration is fucked. Your input is valuable but not the only input.

I find Zooniverse very good, and it does Citizen Historian work too - I spent time digitising concentration camp records because a) families still don’t know what happened to some of their loved ones b) this makes the records available for historians without travelling to archives in person, which I can testify is *invaluable* for disabled historians and helps cut the need for overseas travel to do vital historical work.

It unexpectedly helped me with learning how to decipher premodern handwriting too, which proved really useful in my academic stuff. You *will* pick up valuable skills doing this. Put it on your CV.

Other places you can go to do citizen science, from the notes

(Thanks to everyone who left these in the notes! If you know more, put them in the notes, and I might add them! And ty @enbycrip for the fantastic addition that covered a bunch of details I didn't get to)

Apps/Websites

  • eBird (birds
  • Merlin (birds)
  • citizenscience.gov (big project database, US-based)
  • iNaturalist (nature)
  • MapSwipe (collaboration between several Red Cross organizations and Doctors Without Borders, update vital geospatial data) Smithsonian archives (transcriptions, many subjects)
  • Cornell Bird Lab (birds)
  • FoldIt (folding proteins)
  • Fathomverse (sea animals)
  • Project Monarch (butterflies)

In person

  • Bioblitz (nature) Species watch (species) Audobon Society (birds)

Also:

Even if you don't have time to spend, but do have some processor cycles to spare, check out the projects available at BOINC's Compute for Science: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/

Bringing this back for the inauguration.

Don't spiral or doomscroll. Take a breath.

Then do something to help - both the world and yourself.

Hello dear ones, this is Ola speaking to you from the heart of suffering.

In just a few moments, everything seems so far out of my reach. The world is no longer what it once was; my life has been turned upside down. I once saw myself as a student fighting for her dream, achieving success one after another. But today, after all this, I am left with nothing but memories and broken dreams. 💔

I have lost so much, and now I am back at square one, as if all the effort and hard work I put in over the years has vanished. But still, I cannot lose hope. I am Ola, the ambitious, passionate one who made it to the top. I graduated with distinction and received the top student award at the university. I was first in my college with a GPA of 96.01% " Excellent with 1st. Honor degree", secured a teaching job, and began my master's studies.

My dream filled me with energy; I was eager to achieve more and pursue a Ph.D. program. But today, what can I say?!

Life has been harsh enough, turning everything into darkness. The days have been heavy, and it has been over 471 days since this struggle began, and the wound is still in my heart. Yet, I haven’t lost hope. I still have a dream, my great dream of continuing my studies and achieving my aspirations.

But now, after all I've been through, I need your help more than ever. I ask for nothing but your support, kind words, and a renewed sense of hope. My family and I are living in darkness, and we need your humanity to help us rise again.

My sisters and I can't continue our studies without your help; my family and I need your support to rebuild our lives.

I once had a blog on Tumblr, but it was suddenly deleted, as if all my efforts to raise my voice were in vain. I lost the friends and followers who supported me, and now I am back to square one. And here I am, asking for your help, certain that this world still has people like you who will give me a chance to live again.

I am Ola, in desperate need of your help today.🥺

Please reblog and donate 💔🙏

I want to remind you that there is no ceasefire in Sudan!

Despite the US putting a sanction on Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, who is the general leading the RSF (a paramilitary backed by the UAE), and Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the general for the Sudanese Armed Forced that is backed by Sudan's High Council, the genocide is still ongoing!

We need to do our part: Boycott, protest, and donate!

Please consider extending a helping hand to Eman Abdelrahman, @emiiii980, (#213)! She has been fundraising since January of last year to rebuild her home since the RSF has bombed it. But donations have slowed down significantly. Her fundraiser would stagnate often! In fact, as I write this, it has taken 6 days for her to receive 1 donation! So let's pick up the pace. How about we help her raise the short-term goal of 39K ASAP! 38,689 CHF has been raised. There is 311 CHF ($342 USD) left to go!

You can match me! I have given 5 CHF ($5.50 USD), but you're more than welcome to give more! And make sure to pay attention to the currency exchange. $10 USD = 9 CHF!

This was the museum I went to often in my childhood. I'm no longer able to visit unless I visit family, but this place holds a special place in my heart.

As stated in the article, they hold around 7 million artifacts- many of which are orphaned fossils, with the museum taking in collections that otherwise would have been trashed.

Please consider buying a Paleozoic Pal, but I'll also leave a direct donation link as well.

[for your attention please]

due to issues with linking a valid bank account in his previous campaign, iyad has started a new one to raise funds for rebuilding his home in the wake of the ceasefire, which is a momentary waning of the genocide brought on by escalated violence from the israeli state. the current target of iyad's new campaign is USD$20,000.

please share and donate to iyad's campaign so that he can rebuild his life:

People might bring up Vincent van Gogh as an example of a painter who did great work in spite of, or because of, his suffering. I like to think that van Gogh would have been even more prolific and even greater if he wasn't so restricted by the things tormenting him. I don't think it was pain that made him so great, I think painting brought him whatever happiness he had.

since it’s a scary time to be trans: refuge restrooms is an app which maps gender-neutral/single-stall restrooms. it’s community-mapped, so it’s possible you might be the first person to log the restroom locations, but hopefully it’ll help some people.

please reblog this post if you’ve got trans followers. stay safe.

For my non-trans followers: please consider getting the app just so you can add neutral restrooms to the map when you run across them. Simple way to help.

This is absolutely still a thing, for anyone wondering!

hey hi i'm so sorry to be asking but someone i live w is sick & seems to be getting sicker. i am immunocompromised and running low on masks and various cleaning supplies & other necessities.

i WAS able to order some decongestant for her but we don't have the tests we need to figure out what she's sick with.

i'm a physically disabled person whose income is about 1/3 the local minimum wage and who is stuck in bed most of the time due to a multisystem chronic illness that gives me intense autoimmune symptoms if I sit up for more than a very short time each day

i know i've received help in the past couple months that i haven't had the band width to send thank yous for because my chronic illness stuff has been really brutal for like 3+ months nonstop rn and i feel super guilty for asking again esp without doing that first but I'm struggling to even keep up w basics rn.

anyways i'm almost out of money and not getting paid for 2 more weeks and would be so grateful if any financially secure adult is willing to help!!

I have a wishlist of cleaning/hygiene supplies and other necessities like masks and covid/flu tests (my 2 most urgent needs), or you could send a walmart card to thatdiabolicalfeminist at gmail dot com if you want to help with groceries or general expenses!!

again, i'm extremely sorry to ask and i'm very grateful for everyone being chill about the situation!

So sorry to ask but would anyone be willing to help with cleaning supplies or hygiene stuff or anything?
