Luminosity Makes BIG Moves 2025 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate supermajor held in New York, New York from January 3rd-5th, 2025.
Tournament summary[edit]
Similar to the previous year, tournament organizers ran a Twitter poll regarding Steve's legality at Luminosity Makes BIG Moves 2025.[1] After 54.8% voted against a ban, Steve was legalized, making this event the first in the Luminosity Makes Moves series since Let's Make Big Moves 2023 where Steve was not banned.[2]
In doubles, the team seeded 1st, Onin and lolyoshi, was notably upset by the team seeded 65th, LVL7 and Synnister, 1-2 (upset factor 11), marking one of the largest upsets in Ultimate doubles history. However, Onin and lolyoshi were able to pull off an extensive Losers run to enter Grand Finals, where they lost 2-3 to Lui$ and Kurama.
This event saw several strong runs from Tristate players. First, this event was a breakout performance for #208 seed Luigikid64. He first upset #49 seed Spritzy 3-2 and #80 seed Yoda Cage 3-0 (upset factor 3) to enter Top 128 on the Winners side, where after losing to Wrath 2-3 he made a string of upsets, defeating #89 seed DM 1-3, reverse 3-0ing #17 seed MuteAce (upset factor 7), and upsetting #24 seed Tilde 3-2 (upset factor 7), before falling 0-3 to Quandale Dinglelingleton for 25th. This event was also a resurgent performance for #20 seed Dabuz, who chose to focus on Street Fighter 6 during the LumiRank 2024.2 season and as such was only an Honorable Mention on the rankings. His run involved defeating #4 seed Light 3-0 (upset factor 5) and #5 seed Tweek 3-1 (upset factor 4) to enter top 8 on the Winners side, his first top 8 at a supermajor since Luminosity Makes Moves Miami 2023 in October 2023 and his first top 8 at any major since Cirque Du CFL 3 in March 2024. Finally, a few Tristate players also made upsets on established players: #59 seed PkChris upset #6 seed MkLeo 3-0 (upset factor 7) and went on to place 9th, the best major performance of his competitive career; while #39 seed Pharaoh reverse 3-0'd #16 seed Marss (upset factor 3) for 65th. Marss's placement tied Super Smash Con 2022 as his worst Ultimate major placement, while also being his worst major placement when using Zero Suit Samus.
Outside of Tristate, this tournament was also known for #47 seed JeJaJeJa's run. He first had a minor upset over #18 seed BeastModePaul before losing to Lui$ in Winners top 64. From there, he upset #23 seed Jakal 3-1 and #11 seed Kola 3-0 (upset factor 4) before bowing out to Tweek 3-0 for 9th. This marked the best Kirby placement at a major, outranking Guilheww's 13th-place finish at S Factor 11 which took place only half a year prior. Other notable upsets on high seeds included #179 seed GRIT defeating Marss 3-2 (upset factor 7) and #43 seed Bruho defeating Kola 3-2 (upset factor 4).
Despite making several notable upsets prior to top 8, Tristate was ultimately unable to defend their Tristate Luminosity Makes Moves title. The closest was Syrup, who placed 3rd after defeating Tweek 3-0 and Light 3-2, but was double-eliminated by Hurt 3-1 in both sets. As such, this event became the first Tristate Luminosity Makes Moves event where no Tristate players entered Grand Finals, let alone won, as Grand Finals featuring a match between newly-crowned #1 player Sparg0 and Hurt. Sparg0 ultimately triumphed 3-0 to win the event. With Sparg0 also placing 2nd at the tournament's Rivals of Aether II event, many players compared his tournament performance to Wizzrobe's performance at Smash 'N' Splash 5, as both players won their main event while surprising audiences by placing top 8 at their "side" event.
