  Shinyribs first rocked my world over a year ago at Strange Brew in Austin, Texas. I had heard a few of their songs on the radio, liked what I heard, and wanted to hear them live.

  Kevin Russell started the show solo and sang a Lead Belly song "We're in the Same Boat, Brother" acapella . Then he pulled out his ukulele to sing Jimi Hendrix's "The Wind Cries Mary". Soon the rest of the Shinyribs band came out, and the whole place was rockin': people dancing in the aisles of the small "listening room" venue. The pianist, Winfield Cheek, exudes more talent and exuberance than seems legal! Songs like "Lake Charles" , "Sweeter than the Scars" ,and "Bolshevik Sugarcane" perfectly blended the East Texas sound with swampy Louisiana grooves.

  A live Shinyribs is more like a party than a concert! The band connects with a crowd in powerful ways. Kevin Russell adds storytelling and choreography to turn a song into a 4 minute musical masterpiece! Whether he creates a romantic tale of seduction with "Sweet Potato" or takes you through a joyous tribute to our local cuisine with "Donut Taco Palace" he and all of the amazing musicians make each song a memorable celebration. The band is so unique and so tight and has added a powerful horn section, a phenomenal fiddler player, and even groovy background singers in the last year.

  I am not prone to hyperbole, so please believe me when I say ,"Just go experience the party for yourself!"

  I brought a good friend to Shinyribs' latest Threadgills' party, and she gushed, "Even though you have been raving about Shinyribs for a long time, Girl!, you did not do them justice!" After hearing the band's first song, that friend moved up close to the stage and did some serious booty-shaking the rest of the night.

• I was informed about this band performing in Tulsa as a free show at Tulsa Green which provides entertainment every Sunday for all ages. Decided to check them out on YouTube and was so impressed, I could not to see live show. The audiences in Tulsa are hard to impress and it took a while before they actually started responding to the music. Once Russell personality came through, they went wild. He ended with a conga line throughout the area and had everyone up dancing or in the line having fun. Russell is such an entertainer, and the sound is unique to say the least. Texas/Louisiana style that has never been exposed in this area. The music is original and he has some stories to tell in his own way. When he started crawling around on the floor, doing his thing, that was wild! My son came, local musician in Tulsa, and he was blown away by these guys. We talked about the show to everyone, so the next time they come to Tulsa, which I hope will be soon, we will ALL be there for the show. My friend has seen this band 3 times, so she was yelling out requests and he heard everyone. Said he hears everything in audience. How cool is that?

• The Poet Laureate of Beaumont Texas (also known as Kevin Russell) rolled through Denver on Saturday night, August 8, 2014... we got all twisted up on the dance floor and that's all I can say about that... 'cause there are things about that night we can never speak of again... LOVE ME SOME SHINYRIBS! Those boys know how to R O C K!

• Wild, playful. Packed venue, crowd loved it. Musicians had a great time on stage, interacting with each other and the audience. Extended, personal meet and greet afterward. I just wish the set were longer (there was another act following) and they had some t-shirts for sale.

• Shinyribs never disappoints their audience & this concert was no exception...hands down this show was the best & most entertaining one I've seen yet!!! Can't wait for the next they are in town!!!

• Super fun! Shinyribs puts on a great show. Awesome band - horn section and the Soul Sisters in backup vocals. They never disappoint. Can’t wait for his next visit to Mill Valley!
