Biografia

  • Nick Mulvey is a singer and songwriter based in London, England, U.K who was born on November 4th 1984. After first coming to prominence in the Portico Quartet, he left the band in 2011 to start a solo career and released his top ten selling debut effort in 2014.

Nick Mulvey is the kind of singer-songwriter that shows how uninspired most other singer-songwriters are these days. Yes, he might sing hushed folk songs backed by an acoustic guitar, but his musical education began in earnest when he was 19 years old, and he moved from his native London to Havana, Cuba to study music and art. The intensive course exposed him to styles of music from all over the world, and when he returned to London he capitalised on it by taking up an Ethnomusicology course at the School of Oriental And African Studies at the University of London.

While he was there he met the other members of his first band, Portico Quartet. The band officially formed in 2005 and developed a sound that was as influenced by world music as it was by pop music. After two years of small gigs and busking shows the band signed to the independent jazz record company Babel Label, and their first album was released in November 2007. The band saw some legitimate success, as their debut album was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Music Award, but come 2011, Mulvey was ready to move on. He left the band in January to start a solo career and released his first E.P, “The Trellis” in November 2012 on Communion Records.

His debut E.P landed him an E.P release contract with Universal Music Group for his second effort, June 2013’s “Fever To The Form”, and after a high profile tour supporting Laura Marling, a major influence of his, he signed a more concrete contract with Fiction Records. By the end of 2013, Mulvey was short-listed for the BBC’s Sound of 2014 list, and his debut album “First Mind” was released in May of the same year. It was an immediate hit, charting at number 10 on the album charts and leading to sold out shows at Shepherd’s Bush Empire and prime slots at that year’s Glastonbury Festival. Because he’s accomplished so much with just his debut album, Nick Mulvey comes highly recommended.

Avaliações ao vivo

  • Quiet and composed Nick Mulvey sits with such ease onstage you would believe he had been performing his debut 'First Mind' for years. The reality however is that this album was only released back in May, yet these tender folk tracks have been reworked and delivered with stunning precision and emotion when Mulvey coos on the likes of 'Cucurucu', it's powerful instrumental adding bubbling atmosphere to the track at just the right moments.

From the small venues of his warm up UK tour earlier in 2014 to the gigantic crowds Mulvey drew to his sets at this year's Glastonbury and Bestival, the songwriter seems capable to tackle all with his trusty guitar in hand. Perhaps this is due to his touring background with previous band Portico Quartet, yet Nick's wry smile and glimmering eyes seem to allude to a greater satisfaction when performing his own material.

His debut LP was full of crafted, considered folk with evocative lyrical content such as 'Fever To The Form' which leaves audiences stood aghast as Mulvey slowly builds this brooding track with the subtleties of simple chord changes and that earthy hummed vocal. Whilst 'Meet Me There' has become a cult classic as the crowd become Nick's backing choir for the ethereal choruses to leave the performer visibly moved onstage.

A true British success story, Nick will tour the UK this Autumn to mainly sold out crowds before returning in 2015 to even larger venues to the phenomenal demand for tickets which includes a final date at London's Roundhouse. I highly recommend you try to purchase tickets for the most intimate show available as being able to hear each perfectly plucked note and breathy, melodic vocal echo around is something to behold. After the publicities of the Mercury Prize, and the Brit Awards are assured to offer Mulvey a couple of nods, the 2015 dates will fill up fast.

  • Nick Mulvey’s shrouded in light as he takes to the stage. He just walks up casually from a spot in the room, picks up a guitar and starts playing, a beam of light shining down around him as if he were about to ascend. The setting is intimate. It’s the kind of gig where Mulvey can almost converse with member of the audience between songs, and for it not to seem strained. He needs not even raise his voice away from the microphone for us all to hear him.

He plays some tunes from his 2014 debut, First Mind. Among them are Cucurucu, Meet Me There and April. They all sound amazing live. No doubt they were intended to be experienced in this way – a chilled, mellow vibe and an attentive audience.

His song writing is deeply introspective, at times cryptic. There is a strange and powerful interchange of lyricism and instrumentalism throughout First Mind, both seem to have hidden timbres and messages. The underlying compositions have vague allegiances to bossanova, salsa, flamenco, but are fused seamlessly into a new folk sound. It can rarely be said upon leaving a show that one can gain a better understanding of the person performing, but that was surely the case here.

  • It was a great night! He was more psychedelic than he sounds on the album, but I liked that. He reminded me of John Martyn at times, which has got to be a good thing in my book. Fever to the Form and Meet Me There got big cheers from the crowd. He did a great cover of Drake's Just Hold On I'm Going Home. Really enjoyed seeing him and I'm going to see him again at Kendal Calling in the summer.

  • Awesome music and great vibes! Hackney Arts Centre is an intimate venue and its easy to see & dance. Nick Mulvey hit it out the park in terms of performance and atmosphere. Loved how the entire crowd was up on its feet dancing and singing from start to end as if we’d joined a new cult. It’s a bold statement but I reckon this was my favourite gig yet.

  • The Guardian review was right, a good concert but didn't have the feeling the album has. They gave it 3 stars out of 5.

Surely somebody should have known that doing an acoustic song in the middle of a standing crowd would mean that 95% of the crowd would hear nothing. The crowd was very patient and forgiving.

  • Perfect voice, he and the band was really connected with the audience and we had fun together! They played alot of new song and some old classics that we all could sing along to. I enjoyed the storytelling before some of the songs and what they were about.

  • Great seeing Nick Mulvey once again! The whole performance was trailored around his new album's theme of the current world state and it was absolutely brilliant listening to him mix songs from the first album with new ones.

    Nick never disappoints!

  • Positively spiritual, small and compact venue and this was his acoustic set. All the favourites there along with a personal narrative behind the meaning of most of the songs. Intimate, soulful, beautiful.
