  It’s often surprising to see how many huge bands from the nineties, who then faded critically and commercially, are still a going concern in 2014, but I’m not entirely sure why; after all, Oasis continued to dine out on Definitely Maybe and What’s the Story Morning Glory for the best part of two decades. Spin Doctors are another such band, having released a debut album in 1991, Pocket Full of Kryptonite, that went five times platinum in the U.S. and spawned huge radio hits in the form of ‘Two Princes’ and ‘Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong’. They followed it up solidly, too, with sophomore effort Turn It Upside Down going platinum, too, but since then, they’ve retained only a core cult fanbase as their sound dated. Even so, it hasn’t stopped them from continuing to write and record, with their latest LP, If the River Was Whiskey, released last year, taking them back to a rootsier blues sound than they’d previously flirted with. They still play live frequently, too, with their current U.S. tour seeing them dedicate equal prominence on the setlist to each of their six albums, with a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s ‘Have You Ever Seen the Rain?’ thrown in for good measure. They played an intimate tour of the UK as recently as May of 2011, too, proving that they still have transatlantic appeal; whether they’re simply a nostalgia band or still have something left in the tank creatively, though, is still for them to prove.

• The 90’s was a very awkward century but it also produced the BEST bad music. Catchy, dance-y, rock-ability, take your pick, because the 90s had it all. Spin Doctors was and is at the top of my best 90s music list. I’m not entirely sure how I ended up seeing Spin Doctors, but it was obviously not important, because I only remember the show itself.

  The show itself started out with high energy and ended with even higher energy. As soon as they were announced they started to play “Jimmy Olsen’s Blues,” and midway through the song Eric Shenkman took his guitar solo that hit your soul. Immediately after finishing off the song, vocalist Chris Barron took to speaking to the audience to introduce the band and thank them for their support while the rest of the band tuned and changed instruments. They played all the best of their songs, including “More Than She Knows,” “If The River was Whiskey,” and “You Let Your Heart Go Too Fast.” They closed their show with their hit “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong,” thanked the crowd and left the stage. The crowd was obviously not happy with that ending, wanting to hear their best song yet, so they cheered and called them back for an encore. Best encore ever. “Two Princess” was sung at the top of the lungs by everyone in the crowd, so much so that you really couldn’t hear anything else going on.

• Great Concert!

  I've been a fan of the Spin Doctors for years but never had the chance to see them until this. Red Rocks is the best venue anywhere to watch a concert no matter who the band is but this was one of the better concerts I've seen there. Chris Barron's energy level is incredible. I liked there newer songs from the 2013 album just as much as their older stuff. Blues Traveler was good as well but the Spin Doctors stole the show. The only downside was that they only played for an hour and 10 minutes. I hope to catch a Spin Doctors show someday with them as headliner so I can catch a longer show. If they return to Red Rocks count me in.

• It was a great show. Performance was crisp and great energy and every musician to a one we gave stellar performances and solos. Eric Schenkman played some great innovative guitar solos throughout and masterful drum solo from drummer Aaron Comess and a funky imaginative solo from bassist Mark White had my attention. A tight professional unit indeed.
