Sublime (formed in 1988) is an American reggae and ska infused punk rock band that found prominence in California’s mid-'90's skate and surf scenes, hailing from Long Beach, California, U.S.
Prior to the performing under the moniker Sublime, drummer Bud Gaugh and bassist and multi-instrumentalist Eric Wilson formed the group The Juice Bros with future Sublime manager Michael Happoldt. Lead singer, synth player, guitar player, and percussionist Bradley Nowell joined shortly afterwards, introducing ska and reggae influences into Gaugh and Wilson’s brand of punk rock. Following their performance debut at a small club in Long Beach in 1988, Sublime began performing at parties and small clubs alongside the likes of Smokestacks, No Doubt, and Skeletones.
In 1991 the group recorded their first demo “Jah Won’t Pay the Bills”, which helped augment an underground following for the group. Having created their own label Skunk Records, Sublime issued their debut full-length album “40oz. to Freedom” in 1992. The album strengthened the band’s local following, introduced their fusion ska punk sound, and later earned airplay on Los Angeles’ KROQ with their popular song “Date Rape”. In June 1994 Sublime signed with Gasoline Alley, a subsidiary of MCA Records, and issued their sophomore album “Robbin’ the Hood” the same year. Despite influences drawn from underground rap, rock, and DIY folk, the record sold poorly and failed to raise the exposure of the band.
Following a co-headlining appearance on the Vans Warped tour, Sublime returned to the studio to record their third full-length. On May 25, 1996, lead singer Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose in a San Francisco motel, after a final performance in Petaluma, California a day earlier. Due to the publicity this generated for the group, Sublime’s third full-length “Sublime” has since been certified five-time platinum, aided by the posthumous singles “Santeira”, “Doin’ Time”, “Wrong Way”, and “April 29, 1992”. The remaining members disbanded Sublime shortly afterwards, later releasing the compilation albums “Second-Hand Smoke” in 1997, “Stand by Your Van”, and “Sublime Acoustic: Bradley Nowell & Friends” in 1998.
Leia maisSublime is one of my favorite bands of all time. Sadly I did not get to see the original band but Sublime with Rome. Rome was wonderful and made the concert live greatly up to my expectations. The band was amazing, and the concert was high energy, although the audience was very laid back. ;) They not only played the hits, but other songs as well. I had a blast during the concert, did a lot of dancing, the music was great, and I think Rome did a great job replacing Bradley. The venue of the show was wonderful, and the experience was up close and personal for the most part. The atmosphere and crowd were amazing and everyone had a great time. That night was unforgettable. If you are unsure about seeing Sublime because of Rome, DO NOT HESITATE. The show will be amazing and keep you dancing all night long. Rome sure can sing and strum a guitar. All the songs I wanted to hear were played! Not only was Sublime great but the opening act was a ton of fun and very talented too. I had a wonderful time at this concert, and I will definitely recommend it to everyone. Hopefully I will be able to see them again some day.
Californian rock outfit Sublime split opinion when it comes to their music due to the controversial manner of their lyrical content. Originally breaking up in the late 90s after lead singer Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose, the group now tour under the pseudonym Sublime with Rome after enlisting the help of vocalist and guitarist Rome Ramirez.
This group went on to have Billboard success with their original album 'Yours Truly' yet tonight's setlist is mainly focused on Sublime's original three albums. The crowd is enthusiastic and energetic and this is matched well by Rome's frontman style as he whips them into more of a frenzy for favourites including 'Santeria' and 'Doing Time'. The tongue in cheek lyrical stylings of 'Date Rape' are still rather cringe worthy even two decades later yet the majority of the crowds seems to enjoy singing and dancing along. It is fair to say Sublime were never known for lyrical intelligence however if this is your sort of thing, you won't be disappointed as the instrumentals are on point and all the 'classics' are played.
It sucked, I want my refund back! MOST BORING SHOW I've EVER been to. Couldn't stop yawning. Did not pump up the crowd at all. Stayed in the same spot the entire show-at least try to move around and get the crowd pumped!
