Biografia

  • Neutral Milk Hotel is an American indie rock band formed by singer, guitarist and songwriter Jeff Mangum in the late 1980s. Their music takes the form of psychedelic folk and lo-fi.

Neutral Milk Hotel is the brainchild of Jeff Mangum, and on the band’s two full-length albums, Mangum played with a number of other musicians such as Jeremy Barnes on the drums, Scott Spillane on horns and Julian Koster on the musical saw, banjo, accordion and bass guitar. The band started in Ruston, Louisiana, United States as a side project for Mangum. He produced a handful of demo cassettes such as “Invent Yourself a Shortcake”, “Beauty” and “Hype City Soundtrack.” These are the very early stages of NMH. Around this time, Mangum was wandering around the country, sofa surfing in a state of permanent unemployment. It is reflected in their first release entitled “Everything Is”, which was recorded in Seattle, Washington and released on “Cher Doll Records” in 1994.

“On Avery Island” was the first full-length album, which was released on March 26th 1996 on Merge Records. Through Mangum’s distinctive style of singing, and the bands playfully experimental arrangements, it painted the picture of a carnival atmosphere of moods from excitement, suspense and melodrama. Neutral Milk Hotel by this point became a solid band with Koster, Spillane and Barnes officially joining the band. They moved from city to city, from New York to Athens, Georgia, and then off to Denver to record their sophomore full-length album.

It was their follow up album “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” that took this band to new heights, released on February 10th 1998, on Blue Rose Records in the UK. It became the sixth best selling vinyl album in 2008, and was ranked at #2 in Amazon.com’s 100 Greatest Indie Albums of All Time. Q Magazine ranked it at #16 of the Top 30 Album of the Past 25 Years in 2010.

They didn’t release another album until “Ferris Wheel on Fire” on December 12th 2011, and then went on various tours including a fall reunion tour with their original “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” line up. In April 2014, the Boston Calling music festival line up was announced, which included Neutral Milk Hotel.

  • Neutral Milk Hotel

Neutral Milk Hotel, are a cult US Indie band, that grew out of the Elephant 6 Collective during the nineties. They play emotional, indie folk and their 1998 lp In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is seen as an all-time classic in hipster circles.

Little known at the time (their last gig in London attracted 100 people), their star has risen during the intervening years prompted by lead singer Jeff Mangum’s withdrawal from performing. Mangum (vocals and guitar)returned in 2012 for a series of emotional solo shows and in toured with the full band - Scott Spillane (Brass instruments) Jeremy Barnes (Drums) and Julian Kostar (Bass and Singing Saw) augmented by two touring members.

I saw the band at London’s Roundhouse, in Paris, Toulouse and the Primavera Festival. These were cathartic experiences. There was a sense of unfinished business being completed for band and audience. In London and Barcelona the crowd (must of whom will have got into the band during its interregnum) sang along to Two Headed Boy and King of Carrot Flowers (played solo by Jeff) like a football crowd sings “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and an unexpected moshpit appeared during Over and Over.

Jeff visibly relaxed as the shows went on, by Primavera he was bouncing around and leading the band, in the way that Neil Young leads Crazy Horse. His incredible swooping heartbreaking voice is as impressive live as on record. But it would be wrong to think of this as Mangum plus hired hands, each member contributes much to the evening. Spillane, when not playing sings along, mouthing the words and encouraging the crowd to join in. Julian is like a capricious pixie, dancing around throughout (well not when playing the singing saw - that would be dangerous) and Jeremy the solid and dignified heart of the band.

Don’t be put off by thoughts that the reformed Neutral Milk Hotel can’t possibly live up to expectations built up during the fallow years. They do and are one of the most thrilling live bands of 2014.

  • Neutral Milk Hotel are unique, and this concert encapsulated all their talents perfectly. No one sounds (or looks) like them, even though the masterpiece that is 'In the aeroplane over the sea' is nearly 20 years old.

The setlist relies heavily on this album as you would expect, but tracks from 'on avery island' and 'ferris wheel on fire' benefit from having the weight of a band behind them. Throughout the performance the quality of musicianship is evident, exemplified by the blue-hatted Julian Koster, who seems to play a different instrument for each song. Im sure he could get a tune out of a yogurt pot and a ballpoint pen better than anything in the charts.

At the end of the day though it is the quality of the songwriting and lyrics that set them apart from any other band, and rarely have I been part of an audience that are so moved by a band. On at least three occasions I had to blink back tears, and could see many others trying or failing to do the same. The music just hits you in the chest like no other.

Highlights for me were 'oh comely' (with audience participation) and

'two-headed boy pt 2' although picking highlights is in itself churlish.

If you ever get the chance to see them , make sure you do.

  • Jeff came out and did "I will bury you in time" solo, the rest of the band ran out for "Holland 1945" -- this pattern continued; the band would leave or return as necessary, if a song only required the bassist/accordionist/saw player, only he would come out. The atmosphere was joyous, especially the uptempo "in the aeroplane" songs. In the best way possible, it was like going to church. Jeremy Barnes was just ferocious on the drums, Jeff's guitar playing was really strong and confident, as was his singing. Scott Spillane's beard has gone full-santa white. Julian Koster (the bass/accordion/saw/guitar/violin player) dedicated "Engine" to his grandmothers, one of whomOnly during the encore's "Little Birds" were his vocals less than stellar: he seemed to want to slur over the more horrific parts of the song and those parts were muddy and hard to understand.

  • The concert was incredible. Circulatory System opened for them, which is apparently a rare treat because I hear they don't tour often. I was hoping to get my copy of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea signed by some of the band members, but security told my friends and I that we weren't allowed to see them after the show. Once Nuetral Milk Hotel actually started playing, a group of hippies clearly stoned out of their minds pushed their way up to the front where we were standing and started dancing wildly, pushing and shoving and whatnot. It was pretty funny, but they toned it down a bit about halfway through the show. Overall it was a really great concert. Circulatory System played for about an hour, and then Nuetral Milk Hotel played for about an hour and a half. The lineup was really good too; my friend was worried they were "just going to play In the Aeroplane Over the Sea over and over." Apparently this is going to be their last tour, so I'm really glad we got to see them.

  • I've been a huge fan of NMH since I first heard them like 5 years ago. So it sucked to learn that they hadn't toured in about 10 years and probably never would again. Of course, I was really excited when I heard that they would tour starting last year. I immediately bought tickets to see them in Upper Darby back in January. The show was honestly a life-changing experience. I wanted so badly to see it again. A few days later, they announced another stop in Philadelphia in July (last night) so I bought a couple tickets. The Mann Center was a beautiful venue and the show was incredible. My only complaint would be that it wasn't long enough. I wanted more. I also want to mention how great the staff at the Mann was. I'm handicapped and they were so helpful in helping me get to our seats. Anyway, we had a great time. I would love for them to tour again in the future. If they do, I will definitely see them again.

  • Saw Jeff on one of his solo tours (with accompanying members of a different band that jumped in and played horns and this electronic sax deal) and it was one of the greatest concerts of my life. The raw emotion in his voice and in all the audience members as they sang along, all the words to every song. A girl behind us was balling (a little much for me, but I can see how people get wrapped up in it), it was a truly incredible experience that i thought I would never get to have. Now that they're touring as NMH, it can only get better, as the solo performance left me playing the horns and other instruments in my head (or the crowd humming them), and now I get to hear them all, in real life!

  • When I first discovered Neutral Milk Hotel I listened to their albums obsessively. The music spoke to me at such a deep level. I pretty much gave up the idea that I would ever catch a show so when I saw they were coming to Prague I bought my ticket immediately. Although I loved the albums I must admit I had low expectations for the show. Nothing could live up to my fantasy. I WAS WRONG.

The Band was so tight and clearly having a blast playing their cult classics. Horns, Guitars, Saws...and Jeff Magnum's voice in perfect condition all added up to one of my best shows. It was simply amazing and I would see them again if I ever have a chance.

  • I grew up listening to Neutral Milk Hotel, and this was the first time I had ever seen them in concert. It was so amazing to see my favorite band live. :')

Jeff Mangum has a quiet power to his singing and stage presence that makes you want to close your eyes and cry for one song, and then dance with the stranger next to you.

Also Julian Koster's inventive instrumental breaks throughout the whole show were GREAT AF. The singing saw is the coolest thing to see live as well as the bowed banjo. Wow I love him.

All in all it was a fantastic performance that left me feeling happy, electric, and vaguely sad about the Holocaust.

  • So much better live... so much emotion, so much passion. As soon as Neutral Milk Hotel took the stage I couldn't take my eyes off of them. His voice demands attention and the lyrics just make it a complete experience. They played most of their catalogue, so we definitely got what we wanted. I can't wait to see them again, I hope they come back to prospect park soon! I LOVE YOU, JESUS CHRIST! Uh, I mean I LOVE YOU, NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL!

  • I can't believe I was lucky enough to see them in Chicago a couple of months back. I actually met one of my really good friends there - in the crowd - amidst tears and pure serenity. It was more amazing than I could have ever dreamt. They truly have an angelic presence. I will never forget that feeling.
