Leela James is an American R&B and soul singer-songwriter originally from Illinois who has been active as a musician since 2003.
The young songstress has a voice beyond her years and is hailed by critics as a soul revival. She includes artists such as James Brown, Roberta Flack, Toni Braxton, Mavis Staples, Marvin Gaye and Donny Hathaway as influences whilst her vocal abilities and tones are often likened to Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner. Her debut album 'A Change Is Gonna Come' was praised for its rich, gravelled tone incorporating traditional soul techniques with contemporary genres such as R & B and funk. It included collaborations with Raphael Saadiq and Kanye West.
She is wise beyond her years when it comes to lyricism too, she has an elevated view of the music industry and often condemns the glorification of materialism and misogyny in popular R & B and pop music. She is a firm believer that artists should rely on the credibility of their music and be rewarded for these similarly to how they were in former decades. She released her second album 'Let's Do It Again' through Shanachie Records and the title is a homage to one of her noted influencers, The Staple Sisters. It was far more commercially successful in the States that the debut, peaking at #84 on the US albums chart and #11 on the R & B chart.
That year she received two prestigious award nominations, one from the NAACP Image Award in the Outstanding Artist category and another from the Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul or Rap New Artist. With this elevated critical acclaim and notoriety, her third album 'My Soul' sold even better than its predecessor. It peaked at #37 on the US charts and broke the top 10 on the R & B chart. After this Leela decided to release a cover album in tribute to one of her favourite artists, Etta James, and critics praised the beautiful re-imagination of the iconic singer's most popular hits.

The Los Angeles singer brought that power and emotion when she celebrated the release of her fifth album, ‘Fall for You,’ at B.B. King’s Blues Club & Grill in New York City. With a large band to back her up and two singers to add their harmonies to hers, she brought down the house with ‘Good Time’ and ‘Something’s Got a Hold on Me’ and inspired a dance party at the venue. From her high kicks and dropping down to the ground, Leela showed that she’s not afraid to really get into the music. Her dynamics onstage were full of so much energy that she had to go barefoot toward the end of her set. It looked like the spirit of James Brown overtook her and possessed her to go wild on stage.
What made the show even more memorable is her constant interaction with her fans who came from all over the world. Not only did she bring them up onstage to start a dance party, but she even jumped down to the crowd, stood on a chair during ‘Simply Beautiful’ and serenaded the loyalists, who knew just about every word to the song.
In the past, R&B shows were chilled out and mellow (sometimes to the point of boredom). However after seeing Leela’s gig, it revived my interest in seeing more soul singers live. Sure, they usually sing about love, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get down and boogie whilst doing it.
Many people say the genre of soul comes from within and if you do not truly live and breath the music, then your sounds will not seem authentic. Illinois artist Leela James is one of those voices that seems too old for her young self. She oozes the genres of soul and R & B and it clearly comes from a special place, you can really see the visible passion when she is onstage and she sings with so much depth and tone.
The gritty tones have drawn comparison to iconic names including Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner and Leela matches these lofty claims with a true power and a captivating ability to command an audience as she smoothly drifts from side to side of the stage as though led by the warm brassy tones. The crowd is completely infatuated throughout and as she announces 'Don't Speak' is to be her last song there is vocal disappointment yet they still applaud massively at its finale.
Leela kept it real as a Soul-Sistah sangin' real muzik!! I have to admit I was not a LJ fan and went with a friend who is. After last night not only am I a fan of LJ, but she brought home memories for me as a little girl growing up in the states listening to real muzik. Great show, great performance and great genuine sentiment from LJ. I can't wait until she comes back to London and hopefully I'm still living here. Perhaps she could sell out the O2 Academy in Brixton...No! I know she could sell out O2BA!!
Leela's actual performance wasn't bad, I have a problem with her starting a concert nearly 2 hours late. The second problem was, she allowed the audience on stage and played music from the DJ's laptop during her set. When a person spends their hard earned money to see an artist, that is exactly what their expectation is. I understand she is a hometown favorite, but there is no excuse for allowing and audience to wait 2 hours. I am still upset about time lost and wasted.
Her concert last night was fabulous! The small intimate venue was perfect for both Leela James and her opening act, Daley. I thoroughly enjoyed Leela's energy and stage presence. She sang all my favorite songs whether they were her songs or someone else's. I especially enjoyed her taking us back to back in the day and she started DJing. Her song choices were right on point. I would love for her to come back very soon! Leela we love you!
I am so happy that I was able to attend the concert. Leela was fantastic! Her voice is so great; superb vocals as well as her backup singers. Her energy was awesome and I loved that she invited members from the audience to join her on stage for the ole school party. What made it even better, I was fortunate enough to get a photo with her. I will do my best to see her again when she's in my area. 'Happy fan'
Leela James is an electrifying Soulful SANGER!!! To see her live is an experience you will never forget! She sings from deep in her soul which transfers to her audience.You feel every note in such an electrifying sense that it is utterly impossible to remain seated.The Leela James Experience is a Total Leela James Party!

Such an awesome, fun, and positive performance. Her music is an inspiration to me and she is a talented artist that I can truly relate to. It was just like I was at home old school jammin in the living room with my friends and family. I will continue to see her show every time she comes home to Houston!
I really enjoyed the show she did a good performance and song really well, the only thing I did not like was about the meet and greet. I believe the meet and greet should have been in a separate (backstage) location from all that did pay for the greet.
Leela James was amazing! She really tore the roof off the place! I just wish she had been the headliner, not to take anything from PM Morton but I really came to see Leela not him. She needs her own show. She certainly has enough fans in Portland!
