Born in 1987, Douglas Appling is a Trip-Hop producer and DJ better known by his stage name Emancipator. The New York City, USA based musician has released four studio albums since his debut in 2006.
Before he started focusing on music full time, Appling was and remains to this day something of a musician’s musician. He’s classically trained, having taken up violin lessons at the age of four, and also has experience playing drums in a number of high school bands.
However, what he mainly takes into his work as a trip-hop musician is his violin and guitar playing. His DJ sets have seen him bring on live string players to bolster his sound and he’s been known to do whole sets while playing guitar live as well.
All this makes the fact that he studied and completed an undergraduate degree in psychology all the more surreal. However, it was at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, New York City. So given his location in quite possibly the coolest, most musical neighbourhood in the coolest, most musical city in the world, it makes a lot more sense.
It was while he was there that he started making beats as more than just a hobby. By the time he was 19 he’d released his first album, 2006’s “Soon It Will Be Cold Enough”. His second album, 2009’s “Safe In The Steep Cliffs” was what made his career truly take off, however.
Before then, his only live shows had been sets in Williamsburg coffee houses. 2009 saw his very first professional live shows however, and those shows were spent opening for Bonobo, the British electronica legend who’s one of Appling’s favourite producers and biggest influences.
Those shows, along with a tour of Japan, made Appling a name the world over. Since then he’s had two more hit albums, an interview with Rolling Stone Japan, a Puma sponsorship and has been signed to some of the world’s most prestigious electronica labels.
The sky’s the limit for this unique talent, and seeing him rise to the top of his game will be unlike anything you’ve seen before. One to watch, for sure.

With almost ten years of experience on the circuit, he has made a name for himself through his innovative trip hop beats which is a notoriously difficult genre to get right. Touring with the likes of Bonobo, Douglas has learned the importance of the downplayed on electro and dance music.
He creates ambient soundscapes that the fans get lost within while the trip hop beats trickle smoothly beneath the surface keeping the pace moving along nicely. His scope now reaches far from his home state of Oregon and although it is an acquired field of dance, those who get onboard are completely invested in the music of Emancipator. You feel the chill wave vibes permeate the room and bond the whole crowd together in one euphoric moment. Although Appling has to concentrate pretty firmly on his decks to make sure he gets the mixes absolutely spot on he still takes time to applaud the audience for their enthusiasm before dropping his last track.
If you're someone who doesn't enjoy gigging where you witness a band destroy the stage by launching their guitars into the drumkit, being thrown into a mosh pitt with no choice but to accept being moshed for the length of the song, and leaving the venue with tinnitus, then this could be up your street. Emancipator is an American electronic-dance producer who wows the crowd with his live performances around the world. Accompanied by a fellow violinist and sometimes a dazzling orchestra, Emancipator brings that extra special element to his live shows which puts him at numero 1. in our eyes. Emancipator, or otherwise known as Douglas Appling, is set to play some big shows in October around his home country America so if you can get tickets- go! He is extraordinary live. He even steps away from the decks and slams out riffs and all sorts of crazy licks on the geeeeetar too.

Mr. Appling attended William and Mary which is located in Williamsburg, Virginia NOT New York City. W&M was founded in 1693 and is the second-oldest institution of higher education in the United States after Harvard University.
Douglas you deserve better representation.

2/5. Chill, but not especially interesting live.
Worth going to if they're playing in your town, if you have nothing else planned for the evening. They're technically competent (especially the drummer!!), but they don't... make something grand. Or anything close to it.
If you're hesitant, you're probably better off listening to some of their recorded pieces in the comfort of your own home.
This concert was banging. I'd heard them recorded, but the live set was so much fun. The mix of strings, guitars, samples and drums was great. I just couldn't stop smiling. Talking about drums, props to Colby the drumming beast. I don't know how his arms didn't drop off. The whole team worked really hard, I don't think I could have expected more bang for my buck in that regard.
Emancipator Ensemble transcends his already broad boundaries from before adding the live musicians. While true to his roots, this show was something different and so much more than just good music. I came in expecting a chill, downtempo evening and left energized and full of life. Can't wait to see them again!
What a great show! The venue (Constellation Room) was small and intimate and perfect for this show. Emancipator Ensamble were amazing and the group came together to bring such a beautiful sound to the audience. The crowd was great and everyone was into it. Had an amazing time !
How to describe Emancipator.... Un-fucking-believable. I've been to MANY live shows and the experience I had last night has left me speechless. Emancipator is my favorite electronic artist, but the whole label on the show? Oh my God. Three words: DO NOT SLEEP.
This wasn't as good as the Dillon Francis concert I saw over the summer, but it was still fun. I especially liked Manatee Commune's performance when he opened up for Emancipator. But Emancipator's set was the best. So overall I really liked this concert.
It was disappointing. I expected a more 'live' concert. The synthesizer and violin could barely be noticed and there was no live mixing of the records. Next time they could give more attention to the power of direct feedback of live instruments.
