Jefferson Starship is an American rock band formed in 1974 and currently consists of Paul Kantner, David Freiberg, Donny Baldwin, Chris Smith, Cathy Richardson and Jude Gold.
Jefferson Starship includes members of the incredibly successful psychedelic outfit Jefferson Airplane. The incarnation centres around guitarist Paul Kantner and a concept album entitled 'Blows Against The Empire'. After this things snowballed and Jefferson Starship became a full commitment for founding members Kantner and Jack Casady.
Their first album as a unit was released in 1974 and was titled 'Dragon Fly', it was met with chart success peaking at #11 on the US Billboard and #18 in Canada. The following album 'Red Octopus' is currently the band's most successful release to date, charting at #1 on the US charts and is now certified double platinum selling. It featured a hit single, 'Miracles' which was contributed by Marty Balin, who also wrote the ballad 'Caroline' which appeared on the band's first record.
The next album 'Spitfire' was another success, charting at #3 and breaking into the UK charts at #30 however the band were disheartened at the time that it did not mirror the success of its predecessor. The band continued to tour and release material despite the ever changing line ups, most notably the loss of Grace Slick who was forced to resign at the end of the 70's due to a heavy alcohol problem. Despite all this, the next four albums went on to hold gold selling certificates and Jefferson Starship are still considered a successful psychedelic pop/rock band.
Leia maisThere’s something quite pleasing, especially if you’re a stickler to neatness, about the way that some of the remaining members of sixties psychedelic icons Jefferson Airplane kept a kind of uniformity to the naming process by calling their new group, formed in 1974, Jefferson Starship, but in actual fact, the name’s kind of misleading. It suggests that they were aiming for a sound and a style of music that was in thrall to the cosmos more than ever before, but they actually, if anything, toned down the eccentricities that had come to define them in the sixties; there were still elements of psych and progressive, sure, but they were often lost to the straightforward rock sound that they largely sought to pursue. They enjoyed commercial success throughout the seventies with a couple of platinum-selling records, but things quickly began to unravel for the group when singer Grace Slick’s alcoholism spiralled out of control. The poppier group Starship was formed out of the band’s ashes in the early eighties, but a new group, Jefferson Starship - The Next Generation formed in 1992 with a revolving lineup of former members, and they continue to tour those seventies classics to this day, playing an intimate show at London’s 100 Club back in 2010.
A good size venue and amiable crowd..I felt a little concerned for Paul , who seemed almost frail , and was plagued by technical problems most of the night, swapping cables and and guitars with resignation every song.. he even walked off for a restorative (?) break at one point.
David is still in great voice, and of course Cathy holds it all together with her gutsy vocals. Given they've been at it for 50 years , still a pretty damn fine set., a bit rough round the edges as good rock and roll should be.
The band was GREAT!!! Very nice down to earth people. After the show the band signed autographs and actually talked to the fans,took pictures with fans and everything. Very well done. If I could go see them again I would go in a heartbeat!! No questions asked about it. Very good performance and very friendly and nice band members. You don't see that very often in professional bands!!!GREAT!!!
I can't wait to see them again afue songs brought a tear to my eyes Dave is going to be around a long time yet his voice is as good as it gets the lead man on guitar rocks keyboard is fine drums I got abang out of it lead singer Cathy puts on a good show but don't listen to me go see it for yourself next chance you get I will every chance I get
The most beautiful time on a summer night in Ojai! Jefferson Starship put on a fabulous show to be remembered. The songs, the artist brought back those 70's memories I long have held in my heart...Jefferson Starship took us back. A concert to never be forgotten!
Let me just start by saying, Jefferson starships music was a huge part of my youth. With that said, i think the show was great!! Wish they played longer than they did. I will see this band every time that they are in town. Very special to me.
It just gets better with age. David at 80 years young & Kathy & of course the whole group were wonderful in other word "Great" and worth the ticket price. Saw them a year ago and they keep getting better.

What a disappointment the band was great but the Grace Slick want to be (mimic) was just not there. Maybe in another 50 years she might improve. Just my opinion been following Airplane since they started.
This band was beyond awesome. Kathy Richardson performs with such passion and animation. The whole band Rocked! My husband and I really enjoyed the show. It was a beautiful trip down memory lane!
