Biografia

  • Formed in 1996, Shpongle is a band from the UK that has taken the form of a psychedelic rock band. Simon Posford and Raja Ram are hailed as pioneers of the genre called ‘Psybient’, fusing together psychedelic rock and ambient music.

Shpongle came together in the late 1990s to work on their first export; a full-length studio album entitled “Are You Shpongled?” which is made up of just 7 tracks all of which are over 7 minute long pieces. The duo would spend a lot of the time between this record and the next, working on their own separate projects before re-entering the studio to record “Tales of the Inexpressible” which was released on July 1st 2001. For this album Raja Ram added a much more prominent world music influence to the mix whilst Simon Posford would take classical guitar duties, along with sampling.

It wasn’t until after the release of this sophomore album that Shpongle played their first show, which was at the Solstice Music Festival at Motosu Highland, Japan, in July 2001. Before they released their third album, “Nothing Last… But Nothing is Lost” on June 16th 2005, the band announced that this album would in fact be their last release, but due to the critical acclaim that they were organically building and the general response to their music, they continued to write and perform their music.

Before releasing their fourth album “Ineffable Mysteries from Shpongleland” which was due for release on November 2nd 2009, the band toured extensively, which included a sold out gig at the prestigious Roundhouse in Chalk Farm, London. Following the release of the album the band journeyed to Moscow to play at ‘Milk’ in December 2009.

Between the release of “Ineffable Mysteries from Shpongleland” and their album “Museum of Consciousness”, in 2011 they Shpongle played a handful of dates in Australasia, and North America including playing at the Hammersmith Ballroom in New York City and the Fox Oakland Theatre in Oakland, California. They also played the “Brain in a Fish Tank”, track 1 from their forthcoming album on the tour. The following year, Shpongle performed DJ sets on another tour of the US dubbed, “Shpongle presents The Masquerade”

On May 10th 2014, Shpongle performed a headline show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado.

Have you been Shpongled? If you haven't yet had the pleasure, get yourself tickets to a Shpongle gig pronto, as this is one act whose live shows are not just live music, but interactive, experiential life-changing events that will be imbibed in your memory forever. Sounds over the top? Just go see them for yourself and you'll see what I mean!

Shpongle are a British psychadelic-trance group with many members, especially when performing live, but founded by Simon Posford (aka the incredibly popular act Hallucinogen), and Raja Ram, the eccentric, flute-playing visionary whose other group is The Infinity Project. While their music falls into the category of psybient, comprising of a mix of synth-driven beats and world music, Posford has stated that it is 'like nothing you've ever heard before', and therefore rather difficult to describe in a humble written review. This is why they need to be experienced in person! However, I will try to encapsulate a Shpongle show for you.

If you picture yourself dancing in a room engulfed in colour, lights, and the most transcendental, New Age-hippy trance breaks, combined with the sight of someone in a giant caterpillar suit being chased offstage by a flute-wielding, orange-clad man accompanied by a chorus of ethereally-voiced singers dressed in sequinned white feathers, this might begin to give you an idea of what Shpongle live is like. Standout tracks included the epic string symphonies of 'When Shall I Be Free' and the ever-popular 'Divine Moments Of Truth', but frankly their entire 90-minute set was a highlight in itself. I honestly haven't ever seen a happier, more colurfully blissed-out crowd at any show. Go see Shpongle, now!

  • Enter a psychedelic wonderland with the genius that is Simon Posford, co-founder and mastermind of Shpongle, a visionary genre-defying electronic act who, after five studio albums and a string of epic live events, continues to push the boundaries of electronica as we know it. This is Pink Floyd for the 21st century, the future sound of music. Let us rewind to October 2008, The Roundhouse, London. Shpongle take an adoring crowd through their back catalogue of world-psycheldic-electronic fusion classics. From the seminal "Dorset Perception' with its sweeping strings, female vocals and guitar riffs alongside hypnotic breakbeats, through to the manic scenes and classic dance rhythms of 'My head feels like a frisbee' with a stage filled with dancers seemingly teleported in direct from the Notting Hill Carnival. A Shpongle live set is indeed something awesome to witness. There are always moments of humour such as with a disembodied hologram of the medusa-esque head which acts as a symbol for the group, entertaining the crowd with some words of wisdom, and moments of sheer magic: a lone figure plays from the mysterious hang drum, its beautiful tones echoing through the arena.

The group's second record 'Tales of the inexpressible' or the acclaimed 3rd album 'Nothing lasts, but nothing is lost' would be good places to initiate yourself into the Shpongle sound, but if you are fortunate enough to catch them playing a live show, then it is through this that you will surely become a convert, and be able to look back many years from now, and say "I was there".

  • This was my 26th show of the year. Last year I went to 35 shows. Nothing, absolutely nothing can possibly compare to Shpongle at Red Rocks. It was truly a night that will remain forever in my memory. Incredible music; some of the most diverse you’ll hear from any one band in a single show, combined with an out of this world stage performance, and a crowd so loaded with energy it was absolutely electric. Wow. Simply, wow.

  • Great show! The Schpongletron is an impressive system and Simon killed it. Would have liked to have seen Raja Ram but I guess this is a solo tour for now. Highly recommend seeing Schpongle live - it is a mystical and magical experience.
