BJ The Chicago Kid is a singer and songwriter hailing from Chicago, Illinois, United States who debuted in 2001. He has released one studio album along with four mixtapes, and is best known for his hit collaboration with Schoolboy Q, “Studio”.
After seeing Janet Jackson perform live, the young Bryan Sledge knew that performing music was what he wanted to do with the rest of his life, and moved from his native Chicago to Los Angeles when he was a mere 19 years old to pursue his dreams. Shortly after he arrived, he found plentiful work in the city's soul and gospel scene as a backing singer, first performing with Mary Mary before going on to write and record with everyone from Kindred the Family Soul to Crystal Aiken. It got to the point where he was such a respected side-man that he found himself featuring on Stevie Wonder's album “A Time To Love” in 2005, and a year later he collaborated with Kanye West for the first time on “Impossible”, the end credits song for Mission: Impossible III.
However, it wasn't enough for Sledge to remain in anyone else's spotlight, and in 2009 he took the name BJ The Chicago Kid and released his first mixtape “A Taste Of Chicago”. Over the course of his first three mixtapes he perfected his brand of hip-hop infused soul music, and in 2012, he independently released his debut album “Pineapple Now-Laters”. The following year, it was announced that Sledge had signed a record deal with Motown themselves, and ever since then, Sledge has remained one of the most singular talents in modern R&B. He's worked with everyone from Kendrick Lamar to Joey Bada$$ and has the brightest of futures ahead of him, for that, he comes highly recommended.
Leia maisNeo-soul singer/songwriter Bryan James Sledge better known as BJ the Chicago Kid seems to be the go-to guy for a smooth verse or chorus to layer over a rap track as the young musician has Schoolboy Q, Kanye West, Ab-Soul and Kendrick Lamar as past collaborators. Now signed to Motown records, Bryan is investing himself completely in his solo work after featuring on numerous prolific tracks over the past years.
His constant collaboration in the genres of hip hop and R & B means that his name is already familiar to quite a few people and his reputation is passed on so his fanbase is growing organically. After releasing a taster album titled 'Pineapple Now-Laters' he is poised for a major label release and has been showcasing some new material on intimate tours. His silky vocal sounds absolutely stunning in close proximity and has the entire audience completely engaged with the setlist. Even if they do not know the music, they can appreciate the lyrical narrative of 'Good Loving' and past single 'Everybody's Something'. He leaves the stage after a short set yet the audience applaud enthusiastically as it feels like they have seen something truly special this evening.
I thourouly enjoyed this concert. This was my first real concert and I'm very excited to have gotten to see and take a picture with my favorite artist. I paid 49.50 for 2 tickets but that show was worth 300 a ticket! It was flawless except the venue lol Reesa Renee, Tish Hyman, Elhae (LA), and BJ The Chicago Kid were ALL amazing, talented and humble artist! They should be blowing up in the music world right now. I wouldn't mind attending another one in another city with all of them performing.
I love intimate shows like this. BJ was very personable and had a relaxed stage presence. All the songs sounded like they did on the album with a little bit of a twist. My favorite part was toward the end of the show when he asked if anyone could sing, and he invited them to come up on the stage to break down a song. It reminded me of the way concerts used to be back in the day. I would definitely go see him again!
Amazing show! He is a great performer and his voice is insane! Loved that he played songs from Pineapple Now-Laters and ones he features in as well as In My Mind.
Wished the set was longer, the venue was nice but the seats I had upstairs weren't the best of views.
BJ has such a lovely personality and I got a selfie with him too!
Go see him...Periodt! Sounds like his albums live & you feel his passion when he performs. You won't be disappointed when he he pulls up in your city! Keep reppin the Chi BJ!
Awesome live performance and BJ the Chicago Kid has an amazing voice. Added bonus, surprise guests Joey Badass and Ro James showed up! So dope, can't wait to see again.
I thoroughly enjoyed the show. I would definitely pay to see him perform again. The performers on his tour were good too! I hope he makes his way back to DC soon.
The concert and venue was very nice the security and staff was kinda rude and standoffish other than that i had a good time i will go there again in the future
