Biografia

  • TV On The Radio came together in 2001 as a collaboration between founding members Tunde Adebimpe and Dave Sitek, In 2005 the New York, US Indie Rockers expanded to a quintet and have since released five albums to great critical acclaim.

The band can be quite easily considered to be a modern day “bands band”. They stand apart from many other artists deserving of that curious accolade like Big Star, The Replacements and The Velvet Underground however. This is because TV On The Radio have always managed to balance their respect from critics and peers alike with consistent commercial success. With music as thrillingly weird and defiantly unique as theirs, that’s something to be very, very proud of indeed.

Since “OK Calculator”, the 2002 demo release from Sitek and Adebimpe, the band has recorded and performed with other artists who’ve conquered the music world on their own terms just as much as they have. Fellow mavericks like Trent Reznor, Nick Zinner of Yeah Yeah Yeahs fame, Bauhaus singer Peter Murphy and David chuffing Bowie have all worked with the NYC art rockers and their stock is only getting bigger with time.

Albums like September 2008’s “Dear Science” and its follow up, April 2011’s “Nine Types of Light” have seen them go from strength to strength commercially but that’s not to say it’s been plain sailing for them. Their bass player Gerard Smith tragically past away the same month that “Nine Types of Light” was released, and any lesser band would have folded as a result, but TV On The Radio are no lesser band.

November 2014 sees the release of their new album “Seeds” and it promises to be an expression of everything this band has been through in the last three years and more. They’re influential, in their prime and not going away any time soon. They’re TV On The Radio, and they’re one of the most important bands of this generation.

  • TV On The Radio

Every band has it’s own view of what a live show should be. Some want it to be a close to the recorded experience as possible while others seek to jam out the songs and do something new. TV On The Radio want you to dance. No background art, no thematic light show. They come out and plug in and turn up their monitors. This is definitely an earplug show! But anything else would be a waste because as soon as they start playing there’s nothing beyond the music. Tunde whirls around like a dervish, skittering around the stage while Kyp does the same on the frets of his guitar and with his falsetto voice. Jaleel and Japhet hold the bottom up and push it through the roof as you find yourself uncontrollably bobbing and grooving to the rhythms. Throughout, David tweaks and adds layers just as (touring member) Aaron brings on the brass. The set list was amazing with plenty of new material which felt familiar and fresh at the same time. Every indication is that the new album will be fantastic. The last time I saw them live was in a far inferior venue and Tunde was fighting a throat infection, so the this was a cathartic experience. As one of my favourite bands, it was deeply satisfying to see, hear and feel them fully translate their extraordinary musical talent into a stupendous performance. I’m still dancing this morning.

  • For a music fanatic it is sometimes hard to reconcile your all time favorites and your hidden pleasures, with the risk of being "guilty by association". That is why it is such a pleasure to be a fan of TVOTR, they assume roots and inspiration in black music (Prince) as well as in classical indie rock (Pixies and before that Bowie), and even jazz sometimes.

They now are proud owners of a very rich (and coherent) discography, all the more if you add the solo projects of each musician. Kip Malone delivered top albums under the name of Rain Machine, Dave Sitek is one of the most prolific and looked after producer of the early 10s in pop and rock.

All that comes together on stage when singer Tunde Adebimpe takes the lead of that gang of insanely talented musicians. The sets of TVOTR are well built and thought through: intros are intense, tension builds up, and the mutliple encores often end up with an ecstatic crowd.

In Astra in 2011, they simply set the house on fire, turned the usually-sceptical Berlin rock crowd into the equivalent of a Justin Bieber front row. In the end you simply did not want to let them go!

  • I saw TV On the Radio at Denver's Riot Fest 2014 and I was pleasantly surprised at how good they actually sounded. I previously have never heard of the band, but after hearing them play live I instantly became a fan of theirs. They had an awesome stage presence and each and every note they played had an energy to them that you wouldn't have expected to have felt. They were able to draw in people who were heading to see Sublime on the other side, and kept them there for the rest of the show. They are definitely a must see band if they are ever in your town!

  • Walked into the venue to find Kirin J Callinan performing The Toddler. Bizarre and very funny performance. A mix between Jarvis Cocker and a thunderbird. TV On the Radio came on about 9 and played for just under 2 hours. Not only was the music right on track, the positive energy they were omitting was fabulous! Highlight of the night for me was when they sang Trouble. Everything's gonna be okay

  • A great performance by TV On the Radio at The Ryman last night. The band had good energy and did a nice job working the crowd. My only complaint was that their set was way too loud. The Ryman is not an arena or stadium that demands high volume. It's a classic venue where people want to hear the nuances of the music, and that just wasn't possible.

  • First time seeing these guys live and I have to say I was blown out of the water by their performance. The atmosphere at the venue was incredible and made for a great time! Excellent performance and I will be sure to see these guys again once they are in town. Purple Rain as the last song of the encore; mind blown.

  • They completely rocked the place! Awesome and more awesome! Lazzeray is my new favorite song. And the venue was perfect--small enough to really see them (and REALLY hear them!) SO GOOD!!! Go see them!

  • They were great the venue was absolutely beautiful. There was not a bad seat in the house. But the vocals could have been louder. All and all two thumbs up, no regrets.
