Biografia

  • Modestep are a dubstep and drum and bass influenced rock band from London, UK, achieving success with their breakout hit, "Feeling Good," in 2011.

The quartet came together in 2010, after Tony Friend (production, turntables, guitar), who was already an established DJ, decided to form a band with his brother Josh (production, vocals, keyboards), who were then joined by Matthew Curtis (drums, percussion) and Nick Tsang (guitar), a former member of Go:Audio.

The band has many similarities with Pendulum and The Prodigy, with their amalgamation of electronic dance music with rock influences. However, Modestep take more influence from dubstep, with a sound similar to Flux Pavilion and Sub Focus.

They started working on their debut album in 2011, releasing their first single "Feel Good" in February 2011, which went on to reach number 38 on the UK Singles Chart and number six on the Dance Chart. The song was initially released as part of a three-track EP, including the track "Bite The Hand." Their single "Sunlight" was another brig success, reaching a million plays on Youtube within four days, reaching number 16 in the UK charts. The album release was pushed back on several occasions, finally coming out on the 11th February 2013.

Following the success of their releases, Modestep have embarked on several tours and performed at a number of festivals, becoming regulars on the UK live scene. Their support slot on Lostprophets' 'Weapons' tour in 2012 brought them to a new audience, with their set being extremely well received by Lostprophets' fans. They have also appeared at a number of festivals including Download Festival, Reading and Leeds Festival an Coachella Valley Music Festival.

  • Modestep

Masked, menacing, madness. Those three words could sum up Modestep’s whole career up until this point. However, it’s doubly accurate when applied to their live shows, as the London based electronic rock band have been seen as the natural successor to bands like Pendulum and even the Prodigy with their frantic, ferociously heavy mix of hard rock and electronica. Arguably the way they’ve earned such lofty comparisons isn’t necessarily through their music. Their brand of metallic dubstep is defiantly their own, with singles like Show Me A Sign and Sunlight showing them off as talented songwriters in their own right. However, what truly puts them in the lineage of the previously mentioned bands is the way that such a proudly electronic band can utterly crush it in the live arena. They have a reputation of slaying every crowd they find themselves in front of from clubs to festivals, and earning legions of followers every time they play. A live show of there is a lot like a live band playing a DJ set, with each song flowing into the other seamlessly, dispersed with covers and remixes of their songs that build and build on each devastating breakdown and drop. It’s truly a sight to behold, and a strong argument for what the future of alternative music could sound like. Personally, if the future’s going to sound this good and be this ridiculously exciting live, then I think we can safely say that we’re all in very capable hands.

  • Modestep are one of the bands that I didn’t really warm to (or understand) until I saw them live. The London dubstep, drum ‘n’ bass and rock fusion band formed in 2010 and pretty much instantly blew up. Their heavy, pulsating mash-up music came at just the right time; as Chase & Status and Pendulum had taken live dance music to huge mainstream heights. However, by the time their 2011 smash hit single ‘Sunlight’ came out Skrillex was in the process of using up the last of dubstep’s energy. I was unsure if Modestep could find their place. I was mistaken. I saw them perform at London’s Wireless Festival in 2011 in one of the smaller tents. I was expecting some kind of DJ set with aggy MC, but what I got was an accomplished full band fronted by a charismatic singer-MC. What sets Modestep apart from other similar acts is that they are actually a full, collaborative band who make music to be played live, rather than a DJ-production outfit who hire musicians for their tours. The bass was predictably belligerent, which had people moshing about, but the music also features interesting samples, live vocal melodies and industrial rock guitar patterns. In terms of the vitality they display in a live setting, Modestep are right up there with Chase & Status, Pendulum (in their heyday) and, at least in terms of giving an audience what they want, The Prodigy.

  • If you want a night of guaranteed, all-night partying, you’ve come to right place at a Modestep show. The bunch of Londoners blends a mix of hard rock, drum & bass and dubstep, and exploded into the flourishing UK dubstep scene in 2011 with their slamming party anthem of a debut, ‘Feel Good’. Their next single, the ever-so-catchy ‘Sunlight’, earned itself 1 million Youtube hits in a matter of days after it’s release, ensuring the band’s status of kings of floor-quaking beats and pounding electronic rhythms. As a live act, the quartet certainly knows how to bring the noise, and when I saw them at a hometown show in London last year, they absolutely killed it. The live rock band aspect, with drummer Pat Lundy and guitarist and Kyle Deek slaying at their respective instruments, gives the dubstep/ DJ element of Modestep an undeniable, uniquely powerful edge, and makes the experience of seeing them live even better. They played all of their arm-waving, dancefloor-shaking hits like ‘Show Me A Sign’ and ‘Another Day’, as well as the crowd-pleasing ‘Sunlight’, which got everybody bouncing around like lunatics. They also mixed things up with remixes of awesome jams by Flux Pavillion, Skrillex and Knife Party, which kept the energy up for their entire set. If dubstep is your cup of chai, get yourself some Modestep tickets pronto!
