Biografia

  • Born on the 28th of April 1981, Afie Jurvanen is best known as a side man for one of Canadian indie rock’s true greats Feist. However, in 2009 he released the folk album Pink Strat under the name Bahamas and has been a major critical success ever since.

Like Louis Armstrong, Jimmy Page and Owen Pallett before him, Jurvanon cut his teeth as a sideman before setting out on his own at the comparatively late age of 27. His work included collaborations and concerts with the likes of Jack Johnson and the Weather Station before finding his feet with his most frequent collaborator Feist.

However, come 2008 he ensconced himself in a cabin in rural Ontario with a bunch of his friends and set about recording his own material. The songs came out sounding very much like their recording sessions; they’re relaxed, low key jams with friends, but always with a keen sense of melodic nous and a shared musical ability.

The subsequent album, “Pink Strat”, made an almost immediate impact when it was released the year after. Culminating in a Juno Awards nomination for the year’s best Roots and Traditional album and a Polaris Music prize nomination the year after, in 2010. For those not in the know, the former is essentially the Canadian Grammys and the latter is the Canadian Mercury Prize.

Though the music and the circumstances surrounding its creation may be on the fly, just the way that Jurvanon likes it, this is not to say that everyone involved isn’t taking it seriously. His second album, 2012’s “Barchords” garnered him not only a nomination for Adult Alternative Album of the Year but also a nod for Songwriter of the Year.

These are not the kind of accolades you get if you haven’t paid your dues and worked for every scrap of success you’ve got. With his third album released in 2014, and concerts starting to sell out the world over, the only way is up for this most unique talent. One to watch like a hawk!

  • Bahamas

Bahamas is one of those musicians who has found his musical niche, and yet still manages to have a very broad appeal - and that is even more true of his performances. I saw Bahamas at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, where he performed with a simple backing band of a drummer and some backup singers. His stage presence and banter draws you in, creating an intimate yet casual atmosphere, and the music wins you over with cheeky hooks and soulful arrangements. His Folk Festival set also included a few well-placed covers - and a great Tom Petty sing-along at the end - which made for a fun, accessible show. Both his music and performance style make him a great show to go to even if you're not familiar with his material - it's catchy and easy to listen to, without being overtly pop or really any other genre. It's a winning blend of blues, pop, folk, alternative, soul and more that may not change your life, but can win over just about anyone. Plus, it becomes obvious after just a few songs - and even more so if you get the chance to meet him - that it's a reflection of his personality: warm, genuine, soulful and a little quirky. If you're already a fan of Bahamas, as I was before seeing him perform, his show is essentially a reflection of his albums - relaxed, unassuming and a little cheeky, yet still soulful, polished and professional.

  • The best concert I’ve ever been to. Bahamas happens to be my favorite living artist (second only to the Beatles) and the performance only elevated my love for all his songs. Afie is extremely talented, funny, and down to earth. With 4 other outstandingly talented musicians backing him, every song was filled with energy and had the crowd moving. He was actually sick too and almost cancelled the show, but didn’t for his fans (which I’m incredibly grateful for). So somehow, no matter how crappy he felt or how much cold medicine he was on, he managed to give the best performance I’ve ever seen and I hope he comes back to DC soon.

  • This show was incredible! Afie and the band are talented beyond what I could have imagined! With each note Afie plays on his guitar or with his voice, there is a strong sense of intention and connection which creates an amazing experience of emotions for the audience! My boyfriend and I teared up during the performance, but Afie made sure to keep the mood light by keeping us laughing as well. All 'round incredible show and worth way more than the tickets cost!!! I can't wait to see Bahamas again!

  • I don't get out much. Can't afford to see all of the music I want to see... but I knew I had to see The Bahamas. Their latest album is genius and I can't get enough.

Their live show did not disappoint. They sounded perfect. Each person providing the perfect piece of the puzzle. Smooth Guitar solos, angelic voices, groove.

The only bad part of the show was when they were done, 1 hour and fifteen minutes just ain't enough, but I'll take what I can get.

  • Great show—surreal seeing a band of this caliber live. I only wish they would have played about a half hour longer. But hey, they are only human and even though I think most fans would love a three hour Bahamas show that's pretty hard on a musician. I have no doubt that the crowd would not have wavered a bit if they played every song from all three albums. If you're wondering if you should drive hours to see the Bahamas stop and just buy the tickers now.

  • Excellent show in Islington Assembly Rooms last night. Thank you. Venue looked full / sold out and the band played a rock solid set 90 mins.

Set was packed with old / new songs and some amusing banter about not being able to play 'just the hits' on repeat.

I took my son who plays guitar - and he was suitably stoked by the playing. fantastic. really great show.

  • I am a bigger fan now! The energy at Alix Goolden Hall was incredible. Bahamas literally had 2 100% standing ovations. The set was a perfect blend of old and new. Afie was hilarious and entertaining; he told dad jokes and danced. Afie also happens to be an extremely talented guitarist and singer. All in all, I am a satisfied gal! Thank you Bahamas.

  • Awesome concert! The band was really tight throughout the gig, vocals of both Afie and his female sidekick (sorry, can't remember her name) were top notch. Afie was refreshingly fun and laid back in between songs (and indeed during!), a great reflection of the music itself. Look forward to hearing him again in the future.

  • Simply put - this was an amazing concert. From the venue, to the opener, to the overall crowd - the Bahamas brought the "it" factor. I have been a Bahamas fan for a few months now and I was very excited to see they were coming into town - their overall sound was incredible. I would pay good money to see them again.
