Broken Bells is an alternative rock duo from Los Angeles, California, US that consists of the indie rock god of The Shins, James Mercer, and the mastermind producer, Danger Mouse. Their music is an eclectic amalgamation of sounds that draws inspiration from space rock to psychedelic music.
Although James Mercer and Danger Mouse expressed interest in working together when they met at a festival in 2004, they didn’t get together and start recording material as a group until 2008. In 2009 the duo publicly announced the news about the formation of their new band, Broken Bells. Before Broken Bells released any of their own material James Mercer collaborated on the song “Insane Lullaby” with Danger Mouse on his and Mark Linkous’ album “Dark Night of the Soul”. This song is often performed at Broken Bells’ concerts.
Before Broken Bells each member of the band had a thriving career of his own. James Mercer was in the critically lauded and Grammy nominated indie rock band, The Shins, who gained mainstream attention for their song “New Slang”, which was featured in the “Garden State” soundtrack. Danger Mouse was well recognized for his work in the band, Gnarls Barkley, which had the wildly successful song “Crazy” as well as consisted of CeeLo Green in the band. Danger Mouse is perhaps best known for his production work that has had him working with notable artists like The Black Keys, Gorillaz, Beck, and Norah Jones.
In 2010 Broken Bells released their debut self-titled album to great critical and commercial success. The album reached No. 7 on the US Billboard 200 charts and has sold over 400,000 copies. The album’s single “The High Road” also received extensive play time over alternative radio stations. Critics ended up praising the album and it was even nominated for a Grammy award for Best Alternative Music Album. The album showed the duo using catchy hooks and vocal harmonies to create a strong melodic sense to the album, but the use of electronic synthesizers and sound effects on the album gave their sound an experimental side as well.
After their debut album the band went on their first tour selling out multiple tour dates. In 2011 Broken Bells released an EP titled “Meyrin Fields”, which featured unreleased tracks from their debut album.
The year 2013 seemed like the year that disco was finally coming back. Daft Punk released their highly disco inspired album “Random Access Memories” and Broken Bells would release their second studio album, “After the Disco”. The album consisted of incredibly up-tempo beats, high falsetto vocals that resembled the Bee Gees, and was even recorded using a seventeen-piece string orchestra to get that classic disco feel. Critics responded favorably to the album with most critics commenting on the infectiously catchy hooks and melodies the music presented. The album was also a commercial success going on to reach the No. 5 slot on the Billboard Top 200 chart. The album consisted of several singles including “ Perfect World”, “After the Disco”, and “Holding On for Life”.
After the release of “After the Disco” Broken Bells would tour for the album with numerous sold out dates as well as some stops at festivals. They have also played late night television shows such as “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” where they played the song “Holding on for Life”. Already having released multiple studio albums, Broken Bells have proven themselves to be a well-respected band in their own right and not just some one time experimental project.
Leia maisIf the name wasn’t already being used by another PacNW band, I would venture to say Broken Bells could have been named Modest Mouse. This band was so tight, so entertaining and so humble that is was a little surreal. First of all you’ve got James Mercer, the lead singer of one of the most influential indie bands of the past decade, The Shins, standing stage left instead of front and center where you’d expect him. Then you have one of the most influential and arguably most talented artist/producers of our time, Danger Mouse, in the background…on drums. This line-up was filled out by the 5 other unexpected musicians on various instruments. Danger Mouse did switch it up from time to time…coming up front to play the keyboard and even switching over to guitar, but never once did he try to take the spotlight or even look at the crowd. This band had no right to sound so good and make it look so effortless. Sure, Danger Mouse and James Mercer are seasoned veterans of the indie rock show, but to perform so well with a full 7-piece band after being together less than a year? That’s just unheard of. We got to The Gothic pretty early and entered the venue as soon as the doors opened. This was a first for me, but I was there with my wife and wanted to get one of those balcony seats for this show. We were lucky enough to get 4 seats for ourselves and the other couple we went with. This was a perfect show to watch from the comfort of our own little space with a server delivering drinks the whole time. The show opened with "The Morning Benders" and they were the perfect opening act. Not great by any means, but since I got over the shock of them being young Asian kids at SXSW, I was able to sit back and enjoy their set. It was a little heavy on the mellow songs (I heard a girl outside say there music would be good to listen to at home while crying and masturbating,) but they ended it with a bang and left us ready for the main act. I wasn’t sure what expectations to have for Broken Bells. Every once in awhile an album is released that I listen to once and discard even though there is a lot of hype around it. But then I come back to these albums and I wonder how I could have missed the genius there. (Examples are, Bon Iver‘s "For Emma, Forever Ago," The National‘s "Alligator," Tom Wait‘s "Real Gone" and now Broken Bells‘ "Broken Bells.") I love this album, but to be honest, it’s not an album I would have really needed to see live. But I heard a live broadcast from the Shores at SXSW and then I heard everyone rave about their live set and I just had to check it out. The ticket sales for The Gothic show (which sold out within a week) reconfirmed that this was a band to see live. By the time the first song ended, I knew I was in for a great show. They sounded like they do on record, but they had energy that cannot be felt through stereo speakers. Danger Mouse‘s afro shadow on the backdrop, James Mercer giving a shout out to his parents and sister who were in the audience, having a full band onstage and the designs and light show all added to the incredible Gorillaz meets U2, plus The Shins meets Gnarls Barkley soundtrack. A soundtrack that included material from their only album as well as a couple covers. One of these covers, "Crimson and Clover" was dedicated to James‘ sister "because she hates this song!" I guarantee she was the only one in the audience who hated this version! The show ended with a Danger Mouse wave. It came a little earlier than I would have expected, but it was appropriate. A simple ending to a simply amazing show.
I was a bit dubious that a primarily electronic band would be good live. Boy was I proven wrong! Broken Bells had a tremendously clean performance with excellent flow between songs. The performance in a small venue like Iron City Birmingham was intimate, personal and sound filled. The band kept the audience fully engaged. With four members, the band had a full sound with drums and bass guitar providing a solid foundation and either synthesizers or electric guitar providing the melodic lead. James Mercer carries the performance with his flawless tenor, with Brian Burton (a.k.a. Danger Mouse) providing a tremendous, in your face level of support for the duo. Dan Elken provides solid backing vocals and guitar while Jon Sortland is an absolute pleasure to watch on drums. Sortland's drumming is solid and extremely entertaining. Together, the four touring members of Broken Bells deliver a solid, well done performance that I highly recommend!
A stunning visual spectacle. A flawless musical performance. A sweaty, psychedelic experience.
My advice to anyone attending a Broken bells performance: just let it wash over you, as the sights and sounds fuse into a surreal transcendence that can only come from spacey music delivered with the utmost precision and the most high-budget, audacious stage production I've seen this side of a stadium tour.
While Danger Mouse hops from instrument to instrument crafting intricate grooves, James Mercer seems to lose himself in the recreation of the music amidst the kaleidoscope of lights, colours and projections that swirls around the stage.
While they're not much for stage banter (I think I counted about 20 words from first note to encore finale), it's pure energy and passion keeps every person in the audience riveted.
Needless to say, Broken Bells put on an impressive production.
Excellent show by Broken Bells at The National in RVA! Clear sound, great stage presence, completely 'dance'able. Amazed at how true to their recordings they sound - but not overly staged either.
