Kathleen Anne Brien (born 8th May 1989 in Peckham, London), better known by her stage name, Katy B, is an English singer-songwriter.
Despite her relative youth, it already feels as if Katy B is something of an institution in the world of underground dance music - especially in her native United Kingdom. Key to her success to date has been the sheer versatility, in stylistic terms, of her work; she’s blurred the lines between dubstep, funky, garage, house and R&B on her two albums to date. She had already featured on a slew of underground tracks in and around London’s dance scene before she signed a deal with Rinse - one of the city’s top dance movements - to release her debut record, ‘On a Mission’, in April 2011. That record was prefaced, the previous year, by two huge hit singles that crossed over from the underground to the mainstream - ‘Katy on a Mission’ and ‘Lights Out’, which charted at numbers five and four respectively. The latter featured Ms. Dynamite.
After successful touring for ‘On a Mission’, Brien took some time away to work on her second album; it was released, titled ‘Little Red’, in February 2014. It marked a move by Brien towards the extremes of her sound, in both directions; there were poppier tracks, like single ‘Crying for No Reason’, as well as explorations of more niche genres like deep house. She completed a UK tour - her biggest at the time - in support of it in October 2014, despite being struck by tragedy just a month earlier when her brother passed away.
Leia maisWith a voice so powerful that it hardly needs any amplification (and makes a mockery of her nickname Little Red), Peckham-born Katy B is one hell of a pop star in waiting. It’s only a matter of time before the world wakes up and realises this as a statement of fact. With two solid records in 'On A Mission' and 'Little Red' already under her belt, the twenty-five year old flame-haired singer has been bringing the sound of the clubs to the charts and venues up and down the country with a style and verve unmatched by many of today’s pop acts. As someone who was raised on the music from clubs and radio stations that specialised in dance music, Katy B knows how euphoric those tracks can be, and that’s what she bases her live show around. So the crowd ends up bouncing around to classics-in-waiting like "Lights On" and "5am" as much as the singer does onstage, while a track like "Next Thing" pumps and pulses like a great club track should.
If you aren’t going to the club, Katy B is simply going to bring it to you instead; there’s rarely a time when you’ll look around you when she’s playing that you won’t see someone dancing, or a sea of hands in the air. Looking at the crowd from up there on stage, Katy must be thinking “job done."
Wo! Katy B was soooo good bouncing around with her group of four dancers, singing beautifully " crying for no reason" a personal favourite! She can multi task like no other artist of her generation dancing & singing her heart out! Loved every minute of it. She had a super reception from the Nottingham crowd & she felt everything on stage. Love & respect x
