First of all, it was an amazing experience in itself to even be able to see this band from the Netherlands that I have heard and loved on college radio since the 1980s, and near where I live!
From the moment they began playing, we were swept up into an overwhelming, shimmering atmosphere of Dark Wave, the way you want to hear it. Not only was it still completely exciting, fresh, and captivating, but I feel it is music that anyone can enjoy because it is also very melodic and pleasing for all ears.
Ronny Moorings chatted throughout the show and was personable, funny, and engaging. That is not something that you normally experience at a show of this genre. He was certainly not a shoegazer, and we all benefited from that. I was very impressed with his fluency in English, and later read that he is actually fluent in several languages.
The band did everything that they could to get to Boston, in spite of a record blizzard that cancelled their connecting flight from New York, and indeed pretty much all of their other possible modes of transportation. They had to ultimately rent a vehicle at their own cost, because they knew that the show was sold out, and that they had to get to their fans. Not only did they do that for us, but they played three long encores.
I particularly enjoyed "A Day," "Obsession," and their cover of "Venus."
They pretty much stuck to light banter and the music, which was fine. Moorings did swear at one point and then apologized, saying that he realized that in the U.S., people don't swear, to which the crowd had a good laugh. Then he went on to quip, "but of course your president is so dignified," to a loud and unified round of booing from the crowd, followed by entreaties for him to run for president instead.
It was just a thrilling experience, one that makes me want to consider going to one of the European festivals this summer where they will appear along with others of that general musical genre. I would urge others to check out their music and also to support this band who took on great expense and effort in order to make it to this gig. I for one am very grateful that they did.
If you want to step into a little bit of a time warp then Clan Of Xymox is definitely the band that will orchestrate that experience for you, right down to their image and their presentation on stage. Their music takes the form of a sort of synthesizer driven gothic rock, which they have adhered to for the last thirty years.
With a bank of keyboards with drum triggers to trigger a variety of what would predominantly be 16th hi-hat beats a bass and a couple of guitars, Clan of Xymox walk out on the stage to perform a set made up of some dark and eerie ethereal noises, making quite an impression on this festival audience this evening, who soak up the music before them, and in turn dance along to these heavy beats. “The Host of Seraphim” which is still one of their biggest songs to date makes the audience sing along at an amicable volume. Their sound is such a minor sounding collection of beats and melodies that interweave to make a very intriguing pop sound.
This was the third Clan Of Xymox concert for me. The first 2 concerts were in 1987 and 1988, both in The Netherlands. Now, more than 30 years later, I saw them again. As soon as I heard the very first tunes, I felt being put in a time capsule and sent back to my first concerts in the eightees, when I was 21/22. They neither lost any energy, nor charisma. Their music is as dark, melodic, hypnotic and energizing, as it was 30 years ago. Ronny Moorings has almost not changed, a few years older of course, but in an excellent shape, with his hypnotic voice, as well as his band colleagues. A very good concert, and the band had as much fun, as the audiance.
Great timeless music! If you have the chance seeing them live and you like this kind of music, don't hesitate!

11/24/19 @ le Poisson Rouge NYC - Excellent show but 100% too many mentions of Donald Trump. New York did not vote him in, and I personally don't want to hear his name mentioned when I am trying to enjoy a concert. :-P
Ok, now since that is off my chest, I will say that Clan of Xymox's performance was awesome.
They were energetic, appreciative of the audience and the audience responded with great enthusiasm. The sound was amazing and performance was tight.
I am so glad that they rescheduled from the spring, and I had the opportunity to see them. I've loved them since the 80s.
Clan Of Xymox im Kulttempel in Oberhausen, das war ein Super geiler Abend. Die Band ist geil und die Lokation ist super. Seit über 30 Jahren höre ich die Musik dieser Band und sie ist immer noch genauso gut wie früher. Alle Band Mitglieder sind super nett, und standen nach dem Konzert noch lange für Autogramme, Foto´s und Smaltalk zur Verfügung. Super nett, Super Geiler Abend.
Concert was awesome. They played a few new songs like Loneliness, some older songs like Louise, Stranger, Emily, A Day and Obsession. Also my personal favorites Back Door and Farewell.
They played for almost 2 hours so that was great. It's a pity that they ended the show with the number Venus which isn't their song.
This was one of the best Clan of Xymox shows I've seen. They branched out for some time on several of their endearing songs. Given that the band is on a sweeping tour (in cold weather through most of it), I appreciated the vitality of the set. We had a great dancing time. So glad they are still playing and touring.
They did a really great job. They played all my favorites, including Jasmine and Rose, A Day, Back Door, Obsession, and Loneliness. The other songs that they played were all great too. It’s definitely worth it to go see them!! Also they are really nice people too.
