Gyptian (born 25 October 1983) – real name Windel Beneto Edwards – is a Jamaican reggae singer. His musical calling came at the age of seven when he began singing in church.
The young Gyptian was introduced by his promoter father to Mr. Wong, a record producer from Portmore, St. Catherine, who helped him to hone his sound. The singer’s stage name came from his habit of tying a shirt around his head and styling the hair on his chin like an Egyptian pharaoh. Gyptian’s style of reggae has been labelled lovers rock and roots reggae. His musical and lyrical style has been compared to fellow Jamaican artists such as Sizzla, Beres Hammond and Luciano.
Gyptian released his first album “My Name is Gyptian” via VP Records in September 2004. In 2005, Gyptian had two hits with “Is There A Place” and “Serious Times”, and in 2006 he was nominated for Best New Entertainer at the 2006 International Reggae and World Music Awards. Other well-known hits include “Beautiful Lady” and ballad “Mama, Don’t Cry”.
Gyptian’s biggest hit and most well-known song is “Hold Yuh", which was released in 2010. It became a multi-chart hit worldwide. The official remix for the song features rapper Nicki Minaj, which spent 15 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. Gyptian also released an album of the same name, gaining him more chart success in the US. “Hold Yuh” has been remixed by several EDM producers, including dubstep producer Diplo and Toddla T.
His fourth album “Sex, Love and Reggae” was released in October 2013 and debuted at number one in the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart.
Leia maisGyptian is a wonderful Reggae singer that is even better seen live. He is a thirty year old Jamaican man with a powerful voice and high intellegence that shows through his lyrics. His songs and lyrics are not for younger crowds, he does promote love and political awareness throughout his shows. The audience is more on the mature side of young adults to older adults, but almost never any young children. His two popular songs "Serious Times" and "Mama" have helped propel him to the top of charts and become a well known artist.
Gyptian is also very laid back and relaxed during his shows. He interacts and jokes around with the crowd and lets everybody know that he is grateful that they have come. Some crowds are known to smoke certain things at these concerts, but is not encouraged. His success is quickly spreading into international places and giving him well deserved fame. He has even had famed rapper Nicki Minaj on his official remixes. He is sure to be a hit in the United States very soon.
Windel Beneto Edwards better known by his stage name of Gyptian is primarily a reggae singer yet over his career he has also dabbled in the genres of roots and dancehall. These are all genres affiliated with his homeland of Jamaica so there is no wonder as to why Gyptian seems to have such a natural grasp of them.
His upbringing has had clear influence on his sound and life and he speaks passionately about his parents and his home country between the tracks which seems to energise the audience even more. There is no doubt that the reggae tones sound incredibly authentic and he seems to bring a dose of caribbean sunshine to the rather dark venue. The lighting and stage decoration also help to keep the mood light as the crowds are drenched in hazy purples, pinks and blues whilst Windel croons through the likes of 'Hold You' and 'Beautiful Lady'. The whole crowd are slow jamming much to Gyptian's delight as he plays a final slice of sunshine in the form of 'Selah' before briskly exiting.
Gyptian was phenominal as i knew he would be,he was completely on top form and his velvet voice was exceptional. I am very upset, though, as we had to wait an hour and a half later than stated for Gyptian to come on stage by that time we had to leave. We had a mere few minutes to see him as our train back to the Wirral was due in 10 minutes time. I paid £81 for the tickets and traveled miles to see my number one artist only to be completely deverstated that we had to leave. We ended up missing the last train home and was stranded in Manchester. Gyptian, as usual, was fantastic. We just wish we could have seen the whole event.
Went to see Gyptian last night in Manchester at the band on the wall, we had to wait an hour and a half until he came on, then he went off suddenly he never thanked anyone for going to the venue there was no on core it was a waste of money.
Loved it!!! He is an amazing performer and the Vibe was great..really good night. Cant wait to see him again. Will definitely book again if he comes to birmingham again ☺
Show was Cancelled, not sure why but I didn't go to find put. I hope in the future he do another show with him being present.
