Biografia

  • Shellac, who also go by the title, “Shellac of North America” hail from Chicago, Illinois, USA, and maintain their place in the music world with their “minimalist rock”.

The band formed almost by accident when Steve Albini and Todd Trainer came together, in an off the cuff collaboration. Bob Weston later joined them on bass, who was originally a part of Boston’s Volcano Suns. The sound that Shellac endorses is definitely that of an experimental one, looking at various time signatures and modulations, incorporating obscure sounds into their overall production. They steered clear of pop song structures, and made sure that there was a lot of space in their sound, hence the term minimalistic. They have earned a reputation with their signature sound being very much down to the band’s choice of gear, with Albini using vintage guitars, with a variety of effects pedals. He also uses a copper plectrum. When it comes to their recording, they are adamant that they will use analog equipment over digital. Even down to the artwork, they are meticulous about being different and quite original with their choices in the way that they present their work. They would make sure that all of their LPs were personalized to whoever bought them.

If all of the above wasn’t enough, it was at the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in Camber Sands that the band went on first, each morning; so all of the attendees would be up in time to see all of the ether acts perform. In December 2012, the band celebrated two decades of being a band inviting various bands to come and play at a huge event. The following year the band played a holiday edition of All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in England. They released their “Dude Incredible” album on September 16th 2014.

  • Shellac

I’ve seen Shellac referred to as ATP's House Band. It’s a fair point. They are the archetypal ATP band. But what a house band they are. The band don’t play as often as you would want (they usually have to slot it into the schedule of Steve Albini and bassist Bob Weston’s non stop work as recording engineers) but that just makes you appreciate their dark majesty even more. The last time I saw them was at Iceland ATP. It was the show of the festival, a brutal hour of the Shellac ‘hits’. They tore through ‘My Black Ass’, ‘Prayer to God’ ‘End of Radio, ‘Steady as She Goes’ and, my personal favourite, ‘End of Radio’. Bassist Bob Weston even had time to do a quick Q&A with the crowd. Then, as they played ‘Wingwalker’ and Albini shouted "Look at me, I'm a plane!", they ran around the stage pretending to flying with their arms stuck out. It’s that dark humour that means their soot black angular riffing is so great. They’re not just one of the tightest bands around: there’s a joy and a sense of fun to this ferocious maths rock and the shifting time signatures (I can’t think of another band like this who run around like planes). There’s the wave of sound that scorches your brain but Albini, the curmudgeonly, alt-rock godfather, is always there, ready with a sardonic quip. It means that they could well be the best damn live band on the planet.

  • Post-hardcore trio Shellac may not be a household name yet due to their high levels of instrumental ability and solid album releases, anybody who follows the band will claim they are one of the best acts on the circuit. With over two decades worth of experience, the three guys do come together so harmoniously as they have been through it all together. All the small rooms and the hard times have fuelled the euphoria when they step out to a room and receive rapturous applause.

Intimacy serves them well as the audience crane in during complex and lengthy instrumentals as Steve Albini holds them at his will with the commanding guitar riffs. They did have hits during their heyday and these are interspersed with the highly proficient new material from 2014 LP 'Dude Incredible'. It is a good mixture and the crowd reacts equally well throughout as they are simply happy to see tracks including '95 Jailbreak' recreated in a live setting. As the last track draws to a close, the group thanks the crowd and raise their hands in a deserved applause for the enthusiastic onlookers.

  • Awesome. I went for the loud, uncompromising, math rock. And I got that. But I got more.

I was really expecting Shellac to be as clubbable as they turned out to be, with some good onstage banter and audience interaction. They totally embraced the guy asking his partner to marry him, to the point of Steve Albini leaping into the crowd for a selfie with the couple.

More importantly, the music was top notch and the band tighter than a nat's crochet.

Plus, unlike my previous visit to The Concorde, the ticket checker didn't take it upon herself to give me a dressing down in front of the queue, door staff and smokers, for who knows what reason. So that was nice

  • Excellent show as usual! (4th time I see Shellac)

Shellac has its recognizable proper sound, which was perfect that night.

They performed a lot of songs from their first album "At Action Park".

It was really a great time with one of my favorite band!

For the first time they sold t-shirts (logo on front and SHELLAC on back, black ink on black t-shirt).

  • This was the second best time I've seen Shellac. KOKO is a really lovely, ornate setting in which to see them. We got there early, and were able to watch the gig from the venue's plush, comfy sofas. Highlights were Watch Song, Wingwalker, Prayer to God, My Black Ass, and Dude Incredible. Great venue, great music, great people, great seats.

  • Albini, Trainer and Weston the best live rock band I've ever had the pleasure of seeing ... The raw power energy and atmosphere came together and exploded into the Brudenell. Thanks Brudenell for Shellac. Thanks Shellac for an amazing performance.

  • Amazing performance from a criminally underrated band..

Steve Albini and co were on fine form, doing what they clearly love.. The drummers skill and energy was top level... If they come back to the UK I'll be there in spades... Love you Shellac!

  • Seeing Shellac for the first time in 20 years was like a religious experience, the room was filled with eager fans that got all they could hope for and more. Dude, incredible is an understatement.

  • An epic performance from the mighty force that is Shellac. Two hours of pounding melodic tunes laced with black humour. I'll definitely be heading to the next gig that is in my location.

  • What a band! Always a great gig no matter what venue, fortunately Koko was pretty good. If I could choose what would be included in my Groundhog Day, a Shellac gig would be in there.
