Blockhead is the stage name of James Anthony Simon, an American hip-hop DJ and producer from Manhattan, New York, U.S.
Son to a well-known sculptor and a social worker, Simon grew up in Manhattan, New York and immersed himself in the lyricism and music of hip hop. His first musical endeavour came as the group the Overground where Simon and friends first made music in their early teens. In 1994 Simon enrolled at Boston University, though the producer dropped out after only a year, it was in Boston he met Aesop Rock. Also a student at Boston University, Simon and Aesop Rock began working together after which Simon dropped the idea of becoming an MC and focused his time on producing.
In 1999 Simon made his production debut on the Aesop Rock track “1,000 Deaths” from his “Appleseed” album and produced the majority of his subsequent releases including the album “Float” in 2000, “Labor Days” in 2001 and a number of tracks on his 2002 album “Daylight”. The producer has also worked with the rappers Cage, Hangar 18 and Open Mike Eagle and is a member f the comedy hip-hop group Party Action Committee.
In 2004 Mush Records asked Simon to create an entirely instrumental album and as a result the producer crafted “Music by Cavelight”. After its completion however Mush Records stopped returning his calls and Simon sent into to other labels before Ninja Tune offered to release it. The release has led to a string of similar material including “Downtown Science” in 2005, “Uncle Tony’s Coloring Book” in 2007, “The Music Scene” in 2009, “Interludes After Midnight” in 2012 and “Bells and Whistles” in 2014.

He has got a very hefty CV in that he has worked with some huge names in music, working with the rappers, Cage, Hangar 18, Open Mike Eagle and Murs. He is a member of Party Fun Action Committee. Apparently he got his name from the shape of his head which isn’t quite square, but it’s not far off. Tonight he is due to deliver an hour long set compromised of material from his five studio albums, mainly “Interludes After Midnight”, but he brings out his big singles from the last ten years. The gathering get a little bit restless upon the introduction to Alright which was release in 2006, but of course it is just like yesterday to this hip hop hungry audience. “Expiration Date” is another nostalgic trip. It is nice to hear songs exactly as you know them and exactly as you hear them on the recording but sharing the experience with a thousand other like minded people.
Fantastic dude, very friendly and approachable guy, and had fun with a friend that came, drinks were fine and the place was nice. Listening to him and many others for just $15 is so worth it, and getting a Vinyl signed by him was amazing.
Negatives are security that cannot let anyone back in, once we are in, thats it, we can't go out for air or for a snack, I was also disappointed how long it took for Blockhead to play, had work in the morning and had to miss half of his performance.
If he does come back next time, maybe have him perform a bit in the beginning, let others perform, and have him up one last time in the end so I wont miss a thing. Have more seats available, just came out of work that day and had very tired feet and needed to sit somewhere, bar chairs weren't very comfortable, and of course let security let us out for some air if we need it.
This was the second time I've seen this guy, and he absolutely crushed it both times. The opener was so-so, a lot of bass drops, more EDM style bass drops and what have you, did hear some hip-hop influence toward the end which was a nice change.
Then Blockhead went on and turned the Magic Stick into a free-for-all dance party for about an hour. So worth it for $15. Highly recommended. If he comes to town, don't miss it
After seeing him for the first time in 2015, I was hooked! The venue at Sunnyvale was awful and grimy but that didn't take away from the fantastic show this guy put on. Lots of hip hop influences and really great sample work. He makes the music for a fun night of dancing. Definitely recommend and will go to see him any time he's playing local. SO WORTH IT!
Sensational seeing Blockhead, an artist who pursues his craft with such engagement and focus, who produces works so provocative and playful, whose music has such dimension of impressionism (Claude Debussy is up there, bursting with pride), and who takes you on a journey you want to get back on again and again. My favorite artist of the last 20 years.
I've seen Blockhead many times. His music always delivers, but unfortunately the venues sound did not do him justice. I couldn't even stand to watch him preform. I had to stand by the restrooms or off to the side of the stage. I guess I'll be heading to his show's in Austin or Dallas and for sure Los Angeles to make up for the venues short coming.
Good gig; the whole thing started at 20:00, but Blockhead was the last act, and he didn't come on until 00:00 or so. Worth it though, great bloody Friday it was.
