The Reverend Horton Heat is Jim Heath's psychobilly trio, hailing from Dallas, Texas, US, with Heath considered the godfather of modern rockabilly and psychobilly.
The Reverend Horton Heat are undoubtedly one of the most popular rockabilly and psycobilly bands, helping to popularise the genre after The Cramps first brought it into the fore. His wild showmanship, wicked sense of humor and tales of debauchery and excess make Jim Heath and his band exciting and entertaining, helping to explain their loyal and enthusiastic fan base.
Having worked as a sound engineer around Dallas and Austin, Jim Heath became inspired by the growing punk and roots rock scene. Having made an impromptu performance of "Folsom Prison Blues" at one of Dallas' clubs, Heath decided to commit to music and form a band. Naming themselves Reverend Horton Heat, an ode to Johnny Horton, the band began playing music at various venues around the Southwest, especially in Oklahoma City, in 1985. Building a loyal following and creating hype after selling out venues across the midwest and west coast, the band were soon at the centre of a bidding war in 1989, with Sub Pop becoming the chosen record label. By this time, the band had solidified their lineup to include bassist Jimmy Wallace and drummer Patrick "Taz" Bentley.
The band became an underground hit through their Sub Pop releases, with 1991's "Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em" and 1993's "The Full Custom Gospel Sounds of the Reverend Horton Heat" building an enthusiastic fan base. The band then drew the attention of major label, Interscope, beginning with 1994's "Liquor in the Front." Their next two records, 1996's "It's Martini Time" and 1998's "Space Heater," were highly profitable for the label. Although the band soon left Interscope for independents, maintaining a huge following on the live circuit. The band continued to release records regularly, achieving their highest chart position with 2014's "REV," which peaked at 111 in the US Billboard 200 and number two on the US Heat chart.

Went to see my favorite band, X. Had heard of Rev, but never bothered to check them out because I heard "billy", and it's not my usual gig. He came out, and stood there quietly playing the first few chords of Galaxy 500, & I'm going, Great, he's going to play SLOW billy. And then he screams & all hell breaks loose. Oh, yeah. That'll teach me to prejudge. Here's a guy who looks like an insurance salesman, and effortlessly puts out blistering sounds in a no-nonsense manner
that just thrills me. So gig this.

So now, I've turned into a major Rev groupie, and go to see them if they get within 150 miles or so of me (Allentown, PA). They've even played here twice,(more, please), including an especially memorable show at Crocodile Rock in a driving rainstorm where the roof caved in.
They played on, no problem, one of my favorite shows. This tour, I've seen them in Lancaster, Pa Jan. 15, UA, going to New Hope, Stone Pony, NYC. Can't get enough.
I would urge anyone who loves music (not categories, like some lame people) to GO SEE THIS BAND. You're in for a treat.

ps--I'm 69 years old, have Parkinson's, walk with a cane, and have to find a place to sit because I can't stand for very long. God Bless all these venues who are so kind and find me seating. But, last night at UA, I couldn't stand it, I had to get close for the last few songs and drum solo--never to be missed--so I shouldered my way up front & raised cane.
pps--the drive home was a bitch.
Like Marilyn Manson, the moniker ‘Reverend Horton Heat’ both refers to the individual - in this case, Jim Heath of Corpus Christi, Texas, a man once described as “the godfather of modern rockabilly and psychobilly - and to the group that he fronts, a trio that have been going by the moniker since the mid-eighties. Unlike similar, more general genres of unmistakably American music that have failed to prove themselves a genuine success outside of the States, though, the punk stylings of Reverend Horton Heat’s sound - not to mention the raw energy of their live shows - have made them cult favourites across the globe. With eleven full-length records now nestling firmly under their belts, the Heat have continued to hit the studio and the road with equal levels of vigour - their latest album, REV, was released in January of this year. They continue to tour tirelessly across the United States, playing increasingly eccentric sets that showcase the instrumental diversity of their music, but have been missing in action from the UK live scene for quite a while, at this point; fans will hope that the release of REV will mean a slew of dates in support of it on these shores shouldn’t be too far away.

YOU MUST SEE THE REVEREND HORTON HEAT IN CONCERT BEFORE YOU DIE! That way when you're in heaven you can tell St. Peter at the pearly gates that you have witnessed The Rev and Jimbo perform live, and...
But seriously folks, YOU HAVE TO SEE THEM PERFORM LIVE AND IN CONCERT! It's a performance like no other! I have seen them 5 times in concert, and I continue to purchase tickets whenever they're in the Orlando area. I've seen them at The Beacham Theater twice, The Social, The Ace Café, Will's Pub, and my very first time I saw them, I was wowed instantly at The Crow Bar in State College, PA. And now I will see them at The House of Blues in Oct/2021 in Orlando, FL! I can't wait! According to Song Kick, me and another person have already bought tickets. Granted the venue's scheduled in October, but I'm surprised it aint sold out already!
A complete good time had by all! To see Jimbo lay his upright base down on its side and to continue to play without skipping a beat is already an amazing fete, but to see The Rev jump up on the side of Jimbo's base, balance himself while playing a guitar solo is just mind-blowing!
Awesome show. Hortons Holiday Hayride. The Reverend always puts on a great show. The Blasters rocked and Jr. Brown is classic. The Reverend played his classics and some new stuff that rocks. Big Sandy joined him on stage for some classic Chuck Berry inspired Christmas music and some other hits. Big Sandy has such s smooth voice. He talked to my wife and I for 20 minutes after the concert. Fourth time I seen The Reverend with Jr. Brown and they always satisfy. First time seeing Big Sandy and The Blasters. They were great. It’s a great show with a good mix of styles and sound yet kinda the same genre. Love the new piano player Matt Jordan. It adds a real Jerry Lee Lewis sound. He talked to us afterwards too. Fun guy.
I seen these guys in Vegas, Pittsburgh a few times and Harrisburg. Recommend going to see this show any chance you get.
Last nights show was not up to par. The group i attend with all left a bit disappointed. vocals seemed tired and the sound was lacking in crispiness. Having seen the Rev four times over the past 5 years , i was looking forward to the show. I do not know if it was the venue or that it was in NJ, but not the tight setlist and performance that was expected. there was to much talking from teh rev, he droned on about Jimbo and rest of the band for about a total of 20 minutes over in between 3 songs. I understand the band intros and a spotlight prior to the Jimbo song, but to keep going back to it was painful. big sandy came on and was okay, but alos started to blab on.. remindned me of little steven on underground radio... sometimes not knowing when to be quiet. all in all a sub par show that was so bad we all left early....
Excellent show. I didn't know who Big Sandy was before this show. Now I do. He was excellent also. I was surprised by The Blasters... GREAT MUSICIANS. Junior Brown... he's certainly very skilled, I'm sorry but I'm not a country music fan. I still wouldn't change anything. Any fan of Rock or Surf or Rockabilly music must see The Reverend Horton Heat show in their lifetime. Excellent music AND IT'S FUN!
This was an amazing show and I could go on about it for days! I'll just say this, who didn't think that Unknown Hinson and Reverend Horton Heat playing together wouldn't be awesome? It was truly a treat to see it live. Solid card all day w/ Nashville Pussy kicking Orlando in the teeth and the hilariously entertaining Red Elvises with their Conga line. Solid
Amazing show as always! Revrend Horton Heat put on the best frigging sets. And Nashville Pussy rocked out as well, sadly I missed the Red Elvises though.
These guys have been kicking ass for years!!

Once again an amazing show. It was entertaining and full of energy. Rev even came back for amazing encore. I cant wait for the next show. Thanks to the wonderful staff at the observatory and to all performers. A special thanks to Revern Horton Heat.
Great show! I hope they come around again soon! Loved the narrative, Psycho Billy Freakout, Ace of Spades, and the Folsom Prison Blues cover. They sounded great, and had awesome energy. This was my first time seeing them, it won't be my last.
