Singer/songwriter and guitarist Jesca Hoop is an extremely talented guitarist, singer, and composer of her own genre of music. Her crossover of jazz, experimental music, folk, blues and pop creates something innovative that I love to listen to, and seeing her perform live was just something else entirely.
She opened the show walking centre stage along with nothing but her guitar and a stool positioned centre stage to accompany her. She said a modest hello to everyone, and then began plucking away at a beautiful melody. She played an instrumental piece on her guitar for around a minute, before launching into her acoustic track Born To. She gave a beautiful performance, and managed to hold the entire audience in silence from beginning to end before we all erupted into applause.
She then brought on her band members and introduced them to us, before they played some of her larger sounding poppy tracks. During these pieces in some of the songs from Undress, she got us all with our arms in the air, singing along with her, which was great. Although she was slightly reserved in her attitude, she was very friendly and thankful for our participation and presence as an audience. Her vocal range is incredible, and her high whistling trills really made the show unique.
Jesca Hoop is a must not miss artist. If you ever have an opportunity to see her perform, grab it! She is a unique and phenomenal songstress and possesses a wonderful off the cuff sense of humour, which she shared with the audience during her performance. When La Hoop sang, I was drawn in by the versatility and beauty of her voice so deeply and had no desire to find a way back to reality. Sadly and all too soon the show came to an end, but my head was still full of the music from Jesca Hoop's wonderful new album, as I walked (Or rather floated!) home.
Jesca Hoop is just lovely - really unique music, there's no-one else like her. The setlist was a great mix - lots of new stuff, but some great choices from her increasingly impressive back catalogue too. I don't especially like the words 'kooky' and 'quirky', but if I did then I'd certainly use them to describe Jesca. Having followed her and music for seven years now, and seen her live several times before I can still very heartily recommend her. Thank you Hoop! :)
First night of the tour but apart from a couple of tuning and wardrobe mishaps (guitar straps and ruffs don't mix so well) this was a wonderful evening.
Jesca's voice was in great shape, her sense of humour intact and the band was on top form, especially Lucas Oswald, who showed a different set of guitar skills when backing Jesca from when he played his own songs.
The Boileroom wasn't quite full, but the crowd got full value for turning out on Sunday night
This was the second time I’d seen Jesca Hoop this year and once again this was a flawless performance from this likeable, charismatic performer whose songs sounded even better in the Dome with its wonderful acoustics. Gorgeous melodies. Intelligent, perceptive lyrics. Perhaps the most gifted singer songwriter living in the UK at present. America’s loss is our gain.
What an amazing and unique musical talent Jesca Hoop is. The most beautiful and idiosyncratic but also instantly relatable songs, the most extraordinary voice that's capable of melting hearts with its sound, and the most charismatically eccentric stage presence you could hope for. If she's ever playing anywhere near you, don't miss it.
"Everybody should see jesca hoop at least once in there life time"!
A talented artist with a sharp sense of humour! "very entertaining"
I see her in st johns church, kenilworth. A perfect setting for the accustics & a brilliant voice to be brought alive
Lee Bignell.
We were touched and moved by the performance, the beautiful music, the blending of the different voices. A great evening all together. Thanks and hope to see and hear you all soon!
So pleased she came to Norwich. Hope she comes again. Brilliant gig.
Looking forward to getting the album although it doesn't seem to be available on her website at the moment.
