  I first saw Hot Hot Heat at New York’s Bowery Ballroom, just on the heels of the release of their fourth studio album 'Future Breeds,' and was amazed at the vigor and passion the band splayed onto the stage as artists who have already been performing for over a decade. What lead singer Steve Bays lacked in vocal strength he made up for with pure, unadulterated energy, and drummer Paul Hawley, guitarist Luke Paquin, and Bassist Louis Wu all followed suit, catering to a screaming, overtly animated crowd.

  The hall was bathed in an electrifying blue light as the crowd moshed with the enthusiasm of die-hard fans, at times finding themselves airborne with excitement. As the band finished their classic “Middle of Nowhere” a cappella, the audience sang along to every word, making it an absolutely incredible and magnetic moment.

  Hot Hot Heat is described as everything from new wave to post-punk revivalism, but when the band gets on stage, they’re simply rockers. Live, the band sounds like the love child of The Strokes and Modest Mouse, and if that isn’t reason enough to go check them out, I don’t know what is. Perhaps the band has lost some of their technical ability over the years, but they sure haven’t lost their charm, their edge, or their gift for captivating an audience.
