Biografia

  • Wretch 32 is a rapper hailing from London, England who was born on March 9th, 1985. Since debuting in 2006 he has released two studio albums along with six mixtapes, and is best known for his top ten singles “Blackout”, “6 Words” and “Don't Go”.

Born Jermaine Sinclair in Tottenham, London, England, Wretch 32 grew up around hip-hop music of all shapes and sizes, falling in with locals crews The Combination Chain Gang and The Movement at an early age. A skinny child, his mother gave him the nickname “wretch” when he was growing up, and when he turned his hand to rapping as a young teenager, he took the term as his stage name, putting his lucky number, 32, as its other half. He debuted in 2006, releasing his debut effort “Learn From My Mixtape” the same year, and by 2008 he'd scored a record deal with the indie label Hip-Hop Village. While the album didn't chart on its release, it was hugely acclaimed critically, as were Wretch's follow up mixtapes, and by 2010, he'd built up enough of a following to be listed on the BBC's Sound Of 2011 poll.

Thanks to the exposure that the poll gave him, he signed a record deal with Ministry Of Sound the following year, and released his first top ten single, “Traktor”, in January 2011. The track was an instant hit, hurtling into the charts at number 5, and ever since then, Wretch has remained one of the premier British rappers of his generation, with only the arena-slaying likes of Dizzee Rascal, Example and Tinie Tempah having more commercial clout than he does. His second album “Black And White” was released in August 2011 and after that, everyone from Ed Sheeran to Maverick Sabre was hitting him up for a guest appearance. His third album “Growing Over Life” has been in the words for a while at the time of writing, and has already given the world two top ten singles on the U.K charts. Very few artists seem as set for greatness as Wretch 32 does right now, and for that, he comes highly recommended.

  • Wretch 32

Seeing Wretch 32 perform at his Black and White tour live at KOKO, Camden was an experience I never expected. Wretch 32 was supported by a live band, taking his performance to a whole new level. The set was lively, fresh and engaging from start to finish.

Loick Essien opened up the show with tracks from his LP ‘Identity’, closing with the R’n’B anthem ‘How We Roll’. Wretch 32 made a dramatic entrance to a blacked out stage delivering the first track of the night ‘Black and White’ as his band held the beat. Throughout the night he was joined by a number of other UK talents including Example, Chip, Angel and Kano which was all unexpected, adding to the excitement of the night and keeping us wondering who was next to appear as the ‘Black and White’ album boosts a range of collaborations.

It was clear from this performance that the Tottenham native goes all out when it comes to performing live. His passion was visible in the way he got lost in the music, gliding up and down the stage, at the same time maintaining consistent vocals. This fed the non-stop energy from the crowd, we emulated his drive reciting album favourites like ‘Unorthodox’ and his number one hit ‘Don’t Go’. The live band certainly held their own, amplifying the essence of each song which added a twist to the Hip-Hop set. The set was a mixture of sounds, displaying Wretch’s versatility with tracks like ‘Anniversary’ and my two favourites ‘Hush Little Baby’ and ‘Don’t Be Afraid’. The night closed with the rapper’s top five hit ‘Traktor’, the intense encore performance had everyone in the crowd hyped as we sang along.

I left KOKO proud of the London talent I had just witnessed, wondering why I had not seen Wretch 32 live sooner. Then I caught him gain at his next performance two weeks later to relive the experience!
