Biografia

  • The Black Dahlia Murder is an American metal band from Waterford, Michigan, formed in 2000 and currently consists of Trevor Strand, Brian Eschbach, Ryan Knight, Max Lavelle and Alan Cassidy.

Their name is derived from the 1947 unsolved murder of Elizabeth Short, often referred to as Black Dahlia, one of the most prolific crimes of the 20th century. This seems to match the melodic death metal that the boys create which is inspired by groups such as Judas Priest, At the Gates, Darkane, Metallica, Darkthrone, Morbid Angel, The Haunted and Iron Maiden. The quintet met in 2000 and cemented the line up of TBDM by January 2001. The group released their demo 'What a Horrible Night to Have a Curse' along with a four-track EP, 'A Cold-Blooded Epitaph', the latter of which the group released on Lovelost Records. After playing high profile slots at the likes of Milwaukee Metal Fest, The Black Dahlia Murder signed to Metal Blade Records in 2003.

It took the band a while to gain the commercial recognition to match the cult following they were receiving whilst touring around the States. Their debut album 'Unhallowed' which was engineered by the Walls of Jericho's Mike Hasty failed to chart in the US. However the follow-up 'Miasma' made it into the Billboard top 200 and sat at #5 on the US indie charts which was a huge improvement and was met positively by critics.

The next release 'Nocturnal' broke into the US top 100 which was a huge success for the death metal group, they announced they would be touring the US with Cannibal Corpse to promote their new album Nocturnal and celebrate the 25th anniversary of Metal Blade Records, they invited fellow record mates The Red Chord, Aeon, The Absence, and Goatwhore along too. The next three releases all continued the successes of this release, with the 2011 LP 'Ritual' remaining the bands highest peak at #31 in the US. Despite several line up changes, the band's sound has remained a solid constant and they have toured tirelessly, playing prolific events including Hevy Festival, Vans' Warped Tour and Mayhem Festival.

  • The Black Dahlia Murder

Oh hey! So you’re new to the Black Dahlia Murder?

Well well, aren’t you just in for a treat. This is the band you’ve been waiting for your whole life, this is the band that will introduce you to the wild, wacky and wonderful world of extreme metal. The band simply ADORE all things Death Metal, Black Metal and Grindcore, and they want you to fall in love too.

The incredibly melodic, catchy yet furious riffing will be what appeals to you at first, the choice of artwork shall pique your interest further still, and the simply stunning storytelling lyricism of vocalist Trevor Strnad will be what seals the deal and hooks you, probably for life – it’s going to happen, just embrace it.

They tour and release records as regularly as clockwork; they’re extremely fan-focussed and fan-friendly; and more to the point, they are that rare breed of band who have never written a bad album. They’ve barely even written a bad song. Point is, they’re fantastic and IMO the most utterly essential metal band out there today. If you’re only just hearing about them, don’t put off checking them out for a minute longer. Do it, and do it now.

Onto the more niche aspects, this was now the 7th time your humble correspondent has had the honour of seeing TBDM and as can now be relied upon, they tore through roughly an hour and 20 minutes of feel-good death metal. The band have by now garnered such a following that introductions are no longer really required and they can get on with putting on a performance and giving the crowd more bang for their buck. For the record, I have never seen so many women at a Black Dahlia show before, or for that matter so many crowdsurfers. Their audience is diversifying, we were all there to have a good time and that’s exactly what happened.

Black Dahlia really take the concept of an album cycle seriously and tonight we are treated to a very generous helping of hits from the latest offering ‘Nightbringers’. So much so, in fact, that I personally would rather they forgo the idea of insisting on playing old cuts that the diehards have heard dozens of times before and acknowledged some of their more recent catalogue. ‘Deflorate’, ‘Everblack’ and ‘Abysmal’ have some superb examples of songwriting that sadly won’t see much light of day if the decision from a management point of view remains in the ‘play the new, showcase the old’ mould. However, that’s just a minor gripe from a longtime fan. I’d been looking forward to this concert for months, and I left with a beaming grin on my face, as I always do.

The Black Dahlia Murder do not disappoint.

  • The Black Dahlia Murder, a death metal five-piece from Michigan, have been going for about 13 years now, undergoing a few personnel changes along the way. Not being a person who follows the death metal scene too closely, some friends of mine who are more knowledgeable in the subject mentioned to me that TBDM got a lot of flack from the more purist metalheads round about the time they were starting out, and were dismissed as simply following the current trends. Watching their show at Bloodstock, Derbyshire, a few years back, was really refreshing (I say this as an outsider to the death metal scene). A topless Trevor Strnad bounds around the stage, sweating, showing his pasty, portly and tattooed torso, yelling out encouragement to the crowd before ripping into ‘I Will Return’ with his scorched-earth growl, which made my hairs stand on end. Shannon Lucas, the then drummer, is a machine - he almost sounds programmed, but there’s a blistering intensity to his playing, as well as actually being quite melodic and supportive of the onslaught of riffs played by Ryan Knight and Brian Eschbach. The crowd moshed like crazy. Very intense, very liberating, it made me glad to see the metal scene is alive and well.

  • Come on! It's fuckin' Black Dahlia Murder! What else is there to say?

Met Brian Echbach (rhythm guitarist and founding member of BDM) outside the venue. He told me BDM won't be going on until 10pm (the venue would not give me set times).

There's a craft beer joint around the corner called Taproom 307. So, considering I didn't wanna see any of the openers, I went there for a few GOOD and non-rip-off beers!

    BDM was great as usual.

Their music sounds way more gangster live as things are a bit slowed down and it feels more spontaneous. Probably my 10th time seeing them.

Kind of old-school new death metal bands, for sure.

  • I managed to catch the end of Fleshgod Apocalypse, which is fine. Not a fan.

Whitechapel carried the audience with a great energy, and Boston responded.

TBDM was, as always, an awesome experience. Fans were everywhere, and it was impossible to not get swept by the current.

The pit was intense, but drama-free. Always a delicate balance!

TBDM, like WC, played their whole album, but snuck in a few fan favorite tracks which made the whole venue scream right along!

If you have the chance to catch them, do yourself a favor and go!

  • The Black Dahlia Murder put on a fantastic show! It is immediately obvious that the guys on stage have a great time playing their music and joking around. There was plenty of energy on stage. The lead singer encouraged crowd surfing and interacted a fair amount with the crowd. They played an entire album cover to cover as well as other newer tracks. Their sound was spot on. This was my first time seeing these guys live and I definitely plan to go see them again next time they are in town.

  • Shit was dope. The castle theater wasnt the greatest because they had railing all over the place so not really anywhere to make a good pit. Seemd more like a sit and watch or stand and watch type of place. Probably better for rap concerts. But we still managed to make a tiny pit in the front but it sucked if you got shoved into a handrail because theyre all over the fucking place. Now im just looking forward to next month at mojoes so we can have enough room for that pit!!!!!

  • Great show. The openers were OK but played very short sets. TBDM killed. I had never been to this venue before. The room was kind of small but the acoustics were better than I had expected. There were maybe 120 people there but it was an energetic crowd. Kind of funny: there were two young kids there (probably 10 or 11 years old I'd say). The band tried to curb the profanity but kept forgetting and then catching themselves.

Good show. Decent venue. Glad I went.

  • The Black Dahlia Murder crushed it! Loved seeing my favorite songs from Unhallowed all in one set list. They played a pretty good list of songs after the album as well! Would love to hear something from Miasma next time, and more from Ritual. The energy was huge for their set (as always). New youngster on lead nailed the songs pretty well (definitely a little shredder). And the live mix at Chain Reaction was pretty rad.

  • Amazing show. It would have been my second time seeing tbdm but they had an unfortunate surgery and could not come for the show. Although all the other bands were very good. It was such a good time to see max and igor cavalera playing some old school roots sepultura stuff. All in all I had a really good time. Always love watching shows at the opera house.
