Inner Circle, also known as The Inner Circle Band or The Bad Boys of Reggae, are a Jamaican reggae band formed in Kingston in 1968.
The band first backed The Chosen Few in the early 1970s before joining with successful solo artist Jacob Miller and releasing a string of records. This era of the band ended with Miller’s death in a car crash in 1980.
The group reformed in 1986. During this period, they released several international hit singles, including “Sweat (A La La La La Long)” and “Bad Boys,” the theme from the American television show Cops. The group continued to record and tour thereafter.
Brothers Ian and Roger Lewis have remained the group’s consistent members, playing bass and guitar, respectively. Other long-term members include keyboardist Bernard “Touter” Harvey, a member since 1973, and drummer Lancelot Hall, who joined during their 1986 reformation. The band’s lineup is completed by singer Trevor “Skatta” Bonnick and lead guitarist Benji.

Inner Circle has been around since the ‘60s and reached their peak in the ‘70s with their live performances trumping the reggae scene. Only Bob Marley seemed to rival the fame of Inner Circle. Unfortunately when Inner Circle’s lead singer, Jacob Miller, passed away in 1980 the band decided to take a brief break. However Inner Circle reformed shortly after and came back as strong as ever. Their new sound showed the band mixing in a more pop and rock vibe to their reggae music, and they produced some of their greatest hits in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s such as “Bad Boys” and Sweat”.
Inner Circle’s live performance mixes in laid back sounds with highly energetic spurts of music. They are known to go off on long jam sessions that incorporate improvised melodies and audience participation. In one of their most recent performances of “Bad Boys” they went off on a long jam and incorporated a rap session into the song. Some of Inner Circle’s later work showed the band branching off from traditional reggae and playing in a more dub style that incorporated heavy bass and drums. Their live performances show them playing all different reggae sounds ranging from traditional reggae to roots reggae. During live performances Inner Circle has the bass turned up to loud volumes, which drives the pulse of the music with its warm, rich tones. The guitar is played in a rhythmic pattern with upbeat chucks and ever so often they will incorporate the steel drums into their music. Inner Circle always has a suiting atmosphere during their live performances. The stage is illuminated by warm, calming tones that make you feel as if you were on a Jamaican beach. The band often dresses in a flamboyant way that is visually entertaining which involves them wearing colorful clothing and absurd top hats. Inner Circle is always inciting the audience to dance to their songs and clap in unison to the rhythm.
Inner Circle produces the most laid back tones imaginable with their upbeat guitar rhythms and the sound of brass instruments pulsing through their music in a gleeful way. After over 40 years of making music, Inner Circle has conveyed that they can mix up their sounds in interesting ways and still deliver a stellar performance that will have everyone chilling out to their jovial music.
Inner Circle are a pop and reggae band although their live performance looks more like a hip hop show as members swagger round the stage with hoods up. It does not really seem to match the breezy tones of the music yet fans of Inner Circle know that nothing is ever particularly straight forward with this band. They have been touring for many decades and their longevity is impressive, even more so when you think that reggae is no longer a genre of music in great demand.
There has been a huge amount of musicians involved over the years so the five musicians gathered tonight feel it their responsibility to continue the legacy of everybody involved with Inner Circle as a bigger entity than themselves. The audience is enthusiastic all night and seem really pleased to be able to see this band perform live after they have been touring around for so many years. The vibes of 'Bad Boys' bring the whole crowd together for a singalong before they applaud loudly for the musicians onstage.

My husband passed away a year ago and I would love to be able to come and see you perform just for the memory and to know that he'll be there with me you guys are awesome love everything that you have created such beautiful songs and some badass songs take care of you hope to see you soon kiss kiss
Saw them in a huge concert where I think you had about 15 or a little more to perform but of course they did not disappoint. Am glad I had an opportunity to see them.
