Biographie

  • Pusha T (born May 13, 1977) is the stage and recording name of American hip hop recording artist and performer Terrence Thornton, hailing from The Bronx, New York, U.S.

Born in The Bronx, New York City, but raised in Norfolk, Virginia, Pusha T made his move into the hip hop community as he formed the duo Clipse with his brother Gene “Malice” Thornton. Before long the pair caught the attention of fellow Virginia native Pharrell Williams, who helped the brothers sign to Elektra Records in 1997. With label backing Clipse released their debut album “Exclusive Audio Footage”, followed by Pusha T appearing on Kelis’ 1999 single “Good Stuff” and Nivea’s 2001 single “Run Away (I Wanna Be with U)”.

Prior to forming their own label Re-Up Records in 2004, Clipse released the Pharrell-produced album “Lord Willin’” in 2002 on Star Trak/Arista Records. The album showcased the rappers’ hardcore, gangsta rap delivery that builds and documents on the marriage of drugs and hip hop. “Lord Willin’” earned favourable reviews from across the musical press and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200. “Hell Hath No Fury”, issued in 2006 proved to be the duo’s most commercially successful album, and achieved the kind of critical review success rarely witnessed with the outlets XXL, Pitchfork, and The Guardian. After releasing “Til the Casket Drops” in 2009 Clipse announced they would be taking a hiatus to focus on their solo projects.

Pusha T’s solo career began with signing with Kanye West’s GOOD Music label, which resulted in the rapper appearing on Kanye’s meticulously-crafted fifth studio album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”. After contributing to the music of Swizz Beatz, Lloyd Banks, and Tabi Bonney, Pusha T released the mixtape “Fear of God” and inked a deal with Def Jam Records. The rapper’s major label solo debut EP “Fear of God II: Let Us Pray” was issued in 2011 on GOOD Records and debuted at No. 66 on the Billboard 200. The collection of songs received positive reviews from critics and features guest appearances from Diddy, Kanye West, and Tyler, the Creator.

After contributing to the GOOD Music compilation “Cruel Summer”, notably on the Grammy-nominated single “Mercy” in 2012, Pusha T released his debut album in 2013. “My Name Is My Name”, issued on GOOD Music and Def Jam, received strong reviews from the musical press and features high-profile cameos from Chris Brown, The-Dream, Chris Martin and Kendrick Lamar. Aided by the singles “Pain”, “Numbers on the Boards”, and “Sweet Serenade”, the album debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

  • I'm not sure many people at a Pusha T concert know more than one or two Pusha T songs.

To be fair, he's more famous for his multiple features on Kanye West tracks like "So Appalled." But hip hop fans know his most recent LP "My Name is My Name" has a lot of merit and that Pusha T has come into play as a legitimate solo artist in addition to a great feature. His shows are musically high energy, though his own stage performance is pretty mellow, fitting his suave, drug-dealing rap persona. When I saw him, he had two hype men working the crowd, both locals.

Probably the best (and most surprising) part of the show was when he performed a medley of all the Kanye songs he's featured on - including "Mercy," "Runaway," and "Christian Dior Denim Flow." That was about the moment when I realized the crowd was more familiar with Pusha for his features on Kanye songs, because everybody went wild hearing beats and hooks they actually recognized. I saw Pusha T at a fairly small venue - I can't imagine that his act works well in stadiums or anything, since he lacks the dynamic performance of his peers like Kendrick and Kanye. Still, he managed to involve the crowd and his features in a creative way, and I left the show feeling good about it.

  • Terrence Thornton better known by his stage name Pusha T from Virginia may be the CEO of a record label yet he still has time to tour globally for his devout fan base. Although the rapper has been on the circuit since the early 90's, he only released his debut album 'My Name Is My Name' in 2013. It was met with hugely positive reviews and since then the artist has been performing on larger and larger stages to bigger and bigger crowds.

The response to his album followed by the underground appeal of his mix tapes saw Pusha T gain a ready made fan base ready to watch his expert performance. He appears to rapturous applause as he leads on an entourage of DJs, dancers and hype men. He works through a setlist comprising of his albums, early singles and some work from his mix tapes which the early fans really do appreciate. He swaggers around the stage with the confidence of a rapper who has been on the circuit for over twenty years and covers the greats including Chief Keef and Kayne West. Pusha T's show is a demonstration of freestyle ability and a notoriety of the hip hop greats.

  • Push puts on a great show. Even his opening acts were great. The show started promptly at 8 with the first of three opening acts. They all had great energy and kept the crowd hype. Once Lil Bibby and G Herbo came out, the crowd went crazy. They put on a good show. Pusha had a lot of energy and really worked the crowd. You should definitely be a fan of his current album if you go to this concert because he performs the whole thing. This makes sense as it's the title of the tour. He does perform a few of his features and a few songs from Lord Willin, the Wrath of Cain & My Name is My Name, but this show was definitely for people who listened specifically to Its Darkest Before Dawn.

  • He cancelled his Phoenix show (with no explanation) so I don’t know why i’m being asked to review a concert that never happened.

Edit: Apparently my “review” isn’t long enough to be accepted so here’s another sentence.
