Dead Prez, are a hip hop duo made up of rappers M-1 and stic.man and came together in 1996, in New York City. Their lyrics are confrontational, featuring socialist themes.
It was in 1990 when M-1, journeyed to Florida’s state capital, Tallahassee, to enrol at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, which is where he met stic.man. They became close friends and had a common interest in music and leftist political ideology. It was a couple of years after finishing university that the two hip-hop artists came together in New York where they would later be discovered by Lord Jamar and signed to Loud Records. On board this platform, they built up a fan base from their over the top performances, where they’ve been known to ignite dollar bills and toss apples into the audiences, declaring that they must eat healthily. Before the released of their debut album in 2000, they had already contributed songs to film soundtracks and featured on high profile albums. It was their very first recorded song “The Game of Life (Score)” that appeared on the 1997 soundtrack to the film Soul in the Hole.
Their debut album “Let’s Get Free” was released on March 14th 2000, on Loud Records & Columbia Records. Critical acclaim described it as a return to politically conscious rap and the most politically conscious rap since Public Enemy. Rolling Stone gave the album four stars and lauded its equation of “classrooms with jail cells, the project with killing fields and everything from water to television with conduits for brainwashing by the system” The album peaked at #72 on the Billboard 200 and #22 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums Charts.
Between their first and second albums, they released two mixtapes “Turn Off the Radio: The Mixtape Vol.1” in 2002, and “Turn Off the Radio: The Mixtape Vol. 2: Get Free or Die Tryin’”. Taking a new direction with their second album under Sony Records, they released “Revolutionary But Gangsta” on March 30th 2004, which peaked at 14 on the US R&B chart.
Both M-1 and stic.man, were pursuing their own careers alongside dead prez with stic.man releasing an album called “Manhood” on October 23rd 2007, and “The Workout” on April 12th 2011” and M-1 releasing “Confidential” on March 21st 2006. They have also collaborated with a number of artists such as Outlawz, Young Noble, Bonnot, Kentyah, Brian Jackson & The New Midnight Band.
On Mother’s Day 2010, they released a remix entitled “The Beauty Within” which is a remix of B.o.B and Bruno Mars’ #1 single “Nothin’ on You”, and most recently released an album called “Information Age” on October 16th 2012.

Omni Prezidents breakdancing at the start was certainly entertaining, with their later set being energetic, aggressive, and filthy with some vicious one liners and fiery bars, helped by the their DJ's horror-sounding evil beats.
In between OP and the next rapper, Black Josh, there was Black Josh's DJ with his mix of hip hop classics (Notorious B.I.G's "Kick In The Door", Kendrick Lamar's "King Kunta", both which certainly hyped up the crowd).
Black Josh and his partner had an excellent back and forth of tight rhymes and energetic raps, which entertainingly managed to get the crowd jumping.
In between Black Josh and Dead Prez there was an overlong gap (at least in my opinion anyway) of about half an hour, though there was some fun tracks played including some Wu-Tang Clan.
As soon as Dead Prez came out the crowd immediately got hyped up, with black power fists and jumping crowds, with the frenetic chant along majesty of Politrikks, Hell Yeah, and Dirty White Girl. In between every few songs DP talked about the background on their songs, their recent venture into "Fit Hop", and the concept of call and response at gigs. The longest period of time between songs was the lead into Mind Sex, in which DP explained their thoughts on good relationships before breaking into Mind Sex, with a mosh pit erupting near the mind, as triggered by the members of Omni Prezidents.
They then launched into their biggest hit, Hip Hop (or "It's Bigger Than Hip Hop"), which immediately made the whole venue erupt into a vicious mosh pit before DP stopped the track, saying that some people were caught off guard by the mosh pit, commenting that it was the first time they'd ever seen a mosh pit for Mind Sex, before discussing the creation of Hip Hop, how they pledged never to make "fake-fake records-records", before charging headlong into Hip Hop for the second time, once again illicitly a tremendous sing along of the chorus and a violent burst of moshing.
DP then continued to play a couple of requests, with the well and true conclusion of their set involving the DJ soloing out a scratching remix of "Gangster"
A lot of people enjoy the genre of hip hop for the pounding beats, verses and overall sound yet a large amount of Dead Prez's fanbase not only enjoy all these things, but they are also totally onboard with what the duo has to say through their music.
They have always been renowned for their socialist lyricism and their courage to discuss causes such as militant social justice and Pan-Africanism within their music. They are also incredibly against corporate control over media and music so have released all the music independently and therefore have quite an underground fanbase. This is not to say they have not enjoyed commerciality and their reputation proceeds them as far as performing live goes as the shows seem to attract more and more attendees every time. The passion in which they perform and speak is admirable and you really get a sense of how strongly they feel about these issues. This is very much a concert for the intelligent hip hop fan.
I can never get enough of a live performance by Dead Prez. For political, socially conscious independent HipHop, they are on top of the game. They always bring the best energy and tight flow to their live performances, so they are guaranteed blast!
There's nothing like walking away from a venue with a head full of knowledge to ruminate on & these guys know how to deliver edutainment at its best! Also, their DJ Mike Flo is an amazing emcee & turntables sure to start the performance on fire! He always starts the night with great soul, r&b, & hip hop cuts- total crowd pleaser for the real Hip Hop heads out there. One of my all-time favorite acts, fo sho!
Dead Prez was just pure class. great energy, great soundsystem (bass!!!) and an amazing performance! I have been a big fan of dead prez since they released their first album... yes, yes.. I have heard 'Hip Hop' and fell in love with them... the rest of the tunes on that album just proved they are genius. I love their messages and their flow. First time in my life I had an opportunity to see them and they just proved again that they are amazing artists.
I've loved this group from their very beginning. So it was amazing seeing them perform in person. The venue is alot smaller than the other Yoshi's Jazz Clubs which made everyone literally shoulder to shoulder. But due to the love and vibes in the air that didn't much matter. The whole crowd rocked out with DP! I can't wait to see them again! #rbg4life @rbgchok916
Best shows I've seen for a minute. They played a song off pretty much every project they've ever dropped. This was crazy for me because I used to be the 12 year old white boy doing push ups in my room to "Walk Like A Warrior." I had such a high expectation for the show and they most definitely met it.
Dudes are always on point. Awesome artist. The only problem was the venue and date. On a Sunday before thanksgiving break at St. Petersburg didn't bring out alot of people.
The concert was amazing!! I was able to meet Stic.Man and he was super chill. All love!! Make sure you see Dead Prez when you get a chance! Best show ever!!!
