Avis

  • Steve Smyth

While the memory is still fresh...I have seen Steve Smyth twice last week, on Dec 1st in Rotterdam at the V11 (boat venue) and on Dec 2nd in Amsterdam in The Zonenhuis (Theatre).

Both gigs were different and both were awesome. Steve has the rare talent to put all his emotions into his performance, no matter if it is a small or a large venue. He always gives it all. While he is a very friendly and easy going person, he doesn't spend much time talking on stage, what he does is SING. When he sings he seems to be on another level of existence, his performance is totally captivating.

At both gigs, he played solo, without his usual band ("the outlaws"). With only a guitar and his voice, he paints emotional pictures of life, love and places. Being a travelling artist, he has a lot of experiences and musical influences that affect his style, so I can't even tell what his style can be called.

It is awesome, to say the least! A lot of voice. Raw voice. Rough voice. Soft voice. Where does he draw these endless notes from? these dark howling growls? these pure tones? this controlled fading shaky voice? And emotion. Plenty of emotion, each of the (now five)shows I saw was like a first and last and only one at the same time, always different, always getting under my skin. And when he plays the guitar, he plays it blind, with his eyes closed, and he doesn't treat his instrument softly, he is rather wild.

It doesn't matter what style of music you usually listen to, Steve will most likely win you over with just one song.

The Amsterdam show, where he played for a very wonderful and happy audience in a sold-out (I think) theatre was out-of-this-worls beautiful...

100% recommendation. Amazing concerts. Don't miss seeing Steve Smyth when he is near you- I'd even suggest to take ANY opportunity to see him, even if it involves travelling.

  • A Steve Smyth show is not easy listening. It is the full emotional package and it can be either loud and dirty or soft and sweet. Anyway, it will leave people in awe or people will leave the show. This one was loud and intense. Just Steve and Brock Fitzgerald, one the wildest drummers I've ever seen. He even smashed one of his drum skins in his rage. It is always delighful to see how well these two guys interact and know each other, as Steve's songs are full of surprises. Loud and howling one moment, soft and tender the next. His voice is something else...and so is his performance. As usual, Steve gave it all... the audience in Byron, a mix of die-hard fans and unprepared backpackers who had stumbled in out of curiosity, stayed away from the very front, keeping a safe distance... I've seen shows at other venues, where the audience literally moved onto the stage to be fully immersed in this hurricane of emotions. Towards the end, several people shifted to the front and started swaying and dancing to the compelling tunes. I missed "Written or Spoken", the song that usually pulls everyone in... but it probably didn't fit on the setlist.... Anyway, if you have missed this one, Steve is on tour and I MOST HIGHLY RECOMMEND you go and see him. It might hit you like a thunderstorm and you'll turn into one of those glassy-eyed shaking fans (like me) that will NEVER EVER miss one of his shows in the area again :-)

  • Steve Smyth- what a great performer he is! No matter what, he delivers. Goosebumps for so many reasons. Drummer Brock Fitzgerald was spot-on too. Great location with awesome support musicians, esp. Karl S. Williams is a top class talent. An awesome afternoon with likeminded people :-)

  • Saw and heard Steve Smyth sing “Sometimes all I need is the air that I breathe” on Rockwiz years ago.

It was one of the most beautiful, emotional experiences I have ever heard. Steve has an amazing voice and deserves to be heard globally.

  • I saw Steve Smyth at a very small venue in Darwin, Australia - I had never heard of him before and was amazed at the performance. So deep and raw. Masculine but soft at times too.

  • Awesome. Strong voice with 110% effort by himself and his drummer. I would always look out for his performances in the future. The two Support acts were really great as well.
