Biographie

  • Mother Mother is a Canadian indie rock band formed in early 2005 from Quadra Island, British Columbia, Canada, based in Vancouver, Canada.

Guitarist and vocalist Ryan Guldemond while attending music school in Vancouver, Canada, wished to start a vocal-driven band guided by pop influences. He enlisted the help of sister Molly and friend Debra-Jean Creelman and played various gigs as an acoustic act before recruiting Kenton Loewen on drums and Jeremy Page on bass.

Originally under the moniker Mother, the band independently released a self-titled album which was recorded with the help of Howard Redekopp who has been known for his work with The New Pornographers and Tegan and Sara. The album wasn’t a huge commercial success but acquired the band a host of high-profile gigs including Vancouver International Jazz Festival, Pop Montreal and opening slots for the Wailin’ Jennys and the Cat Empire. Encouraged to change their name to avoid legal issues the band re-released their debut on Feruary 27, 2007 changing the name to “Touch Up”.

Mother Mother’s sophomore album “O My Heart” received positive reviews, with influences as far-reaching as the Pixies, Mozart and William Burroughs. Its follow-up “Eureka” release March 15, 2011, developed the band on a far more orchestral level and adopted a broader spectrum of genre influences from pop ballads to hip-hop. The band’s fourth full-length “The Sticks” was released on September 18, 2012 and charted at No. 11 in the Canadian chart. The band’s most recent album 2014’s “Very Good Bad Thing” was released November 4, 2014 on Island Records, with single “Get Out The Way” reaching No. 9 on the Canadian Alt Chart.

  • I got to see Mother Mother in concert back in 2011 in Tennessee. Their concert was an event to remember.

First, the band looks like they stepped right out of the eighties. Ryan Guldemond had his hair done in an almost fro-hawk that managed to make it through the entire performance. He had the look of Ferris Bueller from the movie of the same name, but the sound that came from the band was anything but eighties.

The crowd fed Mother Mother energy and the band used it to make a concert that was worth the money and effort. The venue was pretty large but it was packed, so people were close. The audience was very eclectic, from hipsters to goth-types.

Mother Mother is a band I really enjoy listening to and I have for a number of years. They borrow styles from a number of places and meld them all together to make a their unique brand of music. They hale from Canada but have played internationally since their inception in 2006. Their music can be enjoyed for any occasion in my opinion, and it varies greatly from song to song. Their concert was great and I hope to see them again in the future.

  • Canadian vocal harmony indie rock group Mother Mother may have a career that is currently less than a decade old but you have to admire what the group has achieved in a relatively short time with very little outside help. Since independently releasing their debut album in 2007, they have gone on to take the live circuit by storm and their alternative/grunge inspired sounds have gained acclaim globally so therefore they have been around the world a number of times.

All of these experiences appears to have fed into their live performance with every member reacting perfectly to each of the other musicians onstage. It is fantastic to see every one of the band throwing themselves into their respective instruments and keeping the pace at a dizzying height. The audience attempts to mirror this by singing louder and clapping harder during the likes of 'Body of Years' and 'The Stand'. Everyone is involved for a spirited cover of 'In Bloom' by Nirvana as they sing along the recognisable chorus before the group capitalises on the energy and closes with 'O My Heart'.

  • Well i Loved this Band, I may be a little obsessed even.But.... i was most than disappointed with the venue. People came down from their seats to dance in front of the stage right from the get go, so i would say the first maybe 8 rows couldn't see a thing. There was one disabled woman wheeled in and was sitting in the front row, so she watched, or rather listened to the whole concert looking at peoples butts while they danced or stood there and watched the whole event. I paid good money for my up front seat to see the band, not people dancing. This is not the venue for this,,,I didn't pay to have to stand to see the band, when i had a PERFECTLY GOOD SEAT. I will not attend another concert at this venue until they change this. The venue was Key City Theater in Cranbrook. But go see Mother Mother, They are awesome!

  • Absolutely phenomenal live- I actually left the concert realizing I liked some of the live renditions *better* than the actual digital recordings. The showmanship and energy was incredible (Ryan is great at riling the crowd up) and they had everyone in the venue yelling and dancing to every single song just as loud and crazy as they were. Jasmin's live rendition of Biting on a Rose gave me genuine chills, and in every way possible they completely succeeded in throwing a killer show, performed with their entire heart and soul in it. I would absolutely recommend seeing them live. Saw them at Neumos in Seattle Jan 2019, 21 only show.

  • This was the best Mother Mother show I’ve been to yet! It was my fourth time seeing them but this was a smaller venue and the sound was awesome and the crowd was great. It was an all ages show and I think that made a difference. There were kids there just singing their heart out and the band was loving it. They played a cover of Radiohead’s Creep and also played a Dirty Town, which I hadn’t heard live yet and is one of my favorites. It was a nice mix of new and old songs. I think they played at least 1-2 songs from every album! Such a great show!

  • I saw Mother Mother live for the first time last night at RBC Bluesfest 2015. The energy and showmanship of this group was amazing. They were very appreciative of the crowd. They are amazing live and I went home grinning from ear to ear. Well worth seeing them and one of my favourites. They were the reason I bought my Bluesfest passes and trust me when I say they did not disappoint. Best band that I've seen at bluesfest this year. So much love for Mother Mother and can't wait to see them again. xoxo

  • The show started relatively quickly with only half an hour between the opening band and the main event. The opening band was pretty good. Mother Mother were absolutely amazing and really went all out! You could just feel the energy and the excitement in the air. They didn't just play the new album but also played some of the best songs from previous ones. Really fun gig.

  • Ahhh-mazing!

Venue was awfully tiny, but an intimate show nonetheless. When they are back, I recommend the Fineline or First Ave.

They were good-natured & obliging when playing song requests. That was def a special treat.
