RL Grime, real name Henry Steinway, is an American producer of hip hop, trap and bass music who also meddles with dubstep and electronic music. A relative newcomer, he has been working the industry since 2011.
RL Grime was born on February 8, 1991 and grew up in Los Angeles in California, USA. He studied music business at university before moving back to LA in 2012. There he joined the electronic music collective WeDidIt with fellow producers Shlohmo, Groundislava, and D33J. He released his debut EP on this collective in April of 2012, titled ‘Grapes’, which consisted of four original tracks as well as remixes from Shlohmo, Salva, and LOL Boys.
One of RL Grime’s most successful and famous singles was his remix of big name rapper Kanye West’s song ‘Mercy’ in June of 2012. It was an enormous success and managed over three million plays on SoundCloud. Ever since, RL Grime has found himself further and further in demand. In December 2012 he made an official remix of Benny Benassi’s notorious song ‘Satisfaction’.
Some of RL Grime’s biggest hits include ‘Trap on Acid’, ‘Flood’, ‘Because of U’ and ‘Scylla’. In addition, he has released one official album (‘Void’) as of 2014 and six EPs. His EP ‘High Beams’ debuted at number eight on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Albums chart and number one on the iTunes dance/electronic chart.
Artists that are often affiliated with or that have a similar style to RL Grime include Baaeur, Ryan Hemsworth, Diplo and Shlohmo.
Plus d'infoThis was my fourth time seeing RL Grime, and by no means the last. Each time has been entirely unique, with unexpected sets that make you dance harder than you thought possible.
The show I attended in Santa Ana was no exception. He dropped his newest single 'Core' which has a very dark and sinister sounding build with a violent siren-filled drop, as well as stuff as old as 'Trap on Acid'. He closed the show with 'Tell Me' and his remix of 'Love Sosa' by Chief Keef, but that turned out to be only the beginning of the end. He played a FIFTEEN minute encore of old rap bangers from back in the early 2000's, and while bumping some Nate Dogg, admitted to smoking weed to it when he was younger. The entire stage turned into a West Coast house party, as people stood on top of the balconies surrounding the pit and danced. RL Grime is an artists who consistently cares about his fans and it really shows at his live performances. Not to mention, the crowd was packed full of people who genuinely love his heavy bass trap-filled music, which made for some great vibes.
I had been told that an RL Grime set can be life-changing. This was my first show ever and I have been following RL for the past 2 years and half while he became the God of trap scene. HE IS EVEN BETTER LIVE!! Henry is a great mixer, he comes up with killer mashups between trap, future bass, jersey club, breakbeat, bass house. Henry can drum the drumline to every song of his and does incredible live drum performances. I will never forget his set. Everyone was jumping throwing elbows moshing headbanging to every single thing he played because he is a complete artist. The visuals of his set are mesmerizing and in perfect sync with every song. I had full goosebumps during 2 hours and they followed me after the set. When he mashed up the lion king theme with Core and his deck elevated towards the club's roof, I realized that it was more than just a show. I will definitely see him again many more times. Can't wait for his second album.
RL Grime is hands out the face of trap music... If you have not seen him yet live, you are definitely missing out... The man can put on a great show. He plays hip hop that blends in to his infamous bass drops. Amazing how such a young dude could be that talented. What is more amazing is how appreciative and humble he is. He got on the mic and thanked the crowd many times. This show in Pomona was special cause he is a fellow LA dude as well. His taste in music will definitely but anyone over. Best show of the year without a doubt. I saw him at Coachella too by the way and yes, it beats Coachella too....
Unlike anything I've been to. The hype was unreal. I had extremely high expectations for this concert and RL did not disappoint. We got up to the front pretty easily, though it didn't really matter where you were because the music and lights felt like they were all around. The songs were top quality, the people were chill, the moshing was great, the hype was insane. 1000/10 would recommend.
RL Grime always brings the fire! So much energy. I feel like I'm being guided on a ride of sound and bass, that builds up each turn it takes the further into the set we get. New sounds from him always catch me off guard in a great way, and the familiar ones are a always a treat, sprinkled throughout the ride of the night. Can't wait for the next Grimey experience. Thank you Henry!
Arrived at the show at about 7:15 and it was tame as. The crowd was quiet and I was a little worred Grimey would be faced with it... but not to worry. Djemba Djemba bought everyone together with his beats, then when Grime came out, shit hit the fan. When he dropped core and monsoon... holy shit. And pursuit by gassefelstein? Damn. That was loose. Great show.
Would 100% recommend. The sounds, the lights, the environment he creates... it's insane and so much fun. The opening acts were also really good and set the tone for when he came on. He has a good mix of just his music, but also more mainstream songs so there's something for everyone! Bonus: he's even cuter in person. You won't regret seeing him
The openers were amazing they kept it turnt, and when RL Grime was up, omg it was amazing his set was really turnt, I loved it, he's great I had a blast at the show. I loved how he went back to back, I didn't like some of the mainstream stuff he played, but other than that I loved the show and had fun, and got to enjoy myself.
I'm sure the show would have been amazing. But I never got to go, tickets were sold out seconds after they went on sale. I understand it's a limited release, but I was able to find dozens of tickets on scalper sites for hundreds of dollars. That isn't fair to the fans. Need to do a better job protecting against that.
RL Grime was a fantastic time! It was super high energy and really fun to dance to. The mix of his own stuff and samples was perfect. I missed him this summer at a festival and promised myself it wouldn't happen again because of all the rave reviews I was hearing. Awesome time! I would see him again in a heartbeat.
