Biographie

  • American hip-hop trio, CunninLynguists are from Lexington, Kentucky and Atlanta, Georgia and consist of Kno, Deacon The Villain and Natti.

The group was first formed in 2000 by Ryan Wisler (Kno), Willis Polk II (Deacon The Villain), and Garnett Bush (Natti) and came up with the name of their trio because they wanted listeners to not take their music as seriously as their music sounded. They released their debut LP, “Will Rap For Food” in October 2001 by Urban Aces; the title being an homage to Dr. Dre's music video for "F*** wit Dre Day." They independently released their second album, entitled “SouthernUnderground” in 2003, and featured guests such as Masta Ace and Supastition.

They started to tour the United States starting in 2003, and in 2004 CunninLynguists signed a distribution contact with Caroline Distributions. This resulted in the re-release “SouthernUnderground,” followed shortly by the re-release of “Will Rap For Food.” Again the group went out on tour of the United States in both 2004 and 2005, performing with other acts such as People Under the Stairs, Raekwon of Wu-Tang Clan and Brand Nubian. On 24 January 2006 the group released their third studio album entitled “A Piece of Strange.” Upon its release, CunninLynguists saw their popularity grow more, especially with extensive touring.

Their fourth album, “Dirty Acres,” a joint venture between their own label APOS Music and Swedish-based label Bad Taste Records, was released in 2007. The album was well received by fans and critics alive, with even some critics calling it one of the best hip-hop albums of the past decade. In 2010 Kno released a solo album entitled “Death Is Silent” but CunninLynguist continued to push as well, releasing “Oneirology” in 2011. Their 2014 album, “Strange Journey Volume Three” was curated entirely be fans who gave feedback and suggestions for features, artwork and song concepts.

Avis

  • The first word I think of when I think of the live shows of CunninLynguists is "fun" which may come as a surprise to those who are familiar with their music.

Their shows are also very energy-filled which may come as another surprise. CunninLynguists are a one of a kind rap group who specialize in really laid back beats with introspective and often emotional lyrics. It's understandable to be a little skeptical of how well that sort of thing will translate live.

Luckily, their setlists when they tour are a pretty good mix of their more laid back songs with their high-energy songs so you never have to be worried about being bored throughout their show. Another cool thing about their shows is that they pretty much treat you like you're a lifelong friend. There is a lot of crowd interaction between songs and they never act like they're better than anyone in the audience. These sorts of small touches during a show really help make the experience more pleasant for everyone involved and I think the group realizes this.

CunninLynguists are still a bit of a hidden gem in the hip-hop world so if you see them you probably won't have to worry too much about getting a spot up close - chances are the venue won't be that big anyway.

  • It would seem three truly is the magic number for US hip hop trio CunninLynguists. With members hailing from Georgia, Kentucky and Lexington, the three have been making music together since the beginning of 2000. They started performing and recording almost immediately after their formation and the underground following made itself known across the States.

Now a recognisable name in the world of alternative hip hop, tickets to their tours are difficult to get hold of as venues become packed out with the devout and the new converts. The three rappers come together well onstage and use each other's energy to capitalise on tracks such as 'Imperial' and 'Yellow Line'. This energy then gets transferred to the crowd as they jump along to the heavy bass whilst the rappers concentrate on spitting their complex lyrical verses. They end on one of their most recognisable tracks 'Seasons' before quickly exiting the stage to the sound of huge cheers. The crowd brings them back out with noise for an encore of 'Lynguistics' so they have chance to bounce along one last time.

  • well if you hate melodies that intertwine with lyrics to create a harmonic flow of soul uplifting songs, then you're probably a Nickleback fan and you weren't welcome anyways.

Not only was the show as energised as a caffeinated child, the venue (Chelsea Underground in Stamford Bridge)was classically cool, it's the only department that's bringing in unbelievable talent at Chelsea these days.

The band themselves were just lovely, a bunch of gentlemen G's that stayed afterwards to chat and do a couple of signings with us common folk.
