Biographie

  • Formed in 2006, Beirut is an American folk pop outfit, originally the brainchild of Zach Condon, who hails from Santa Fe, New Mexico. They are a concoction of indie-rock and world music.

Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on February 13th 1986, Condon spent his adolescence in Newport News, Virginia and Santa Fe. It was around this time that he played trumpet in a jazz band. He dropped out of Santa Fe High School at 17 to pursue music, and stumbled across Mexican music such as mariachi. When he worked in a cinema, where he would show international films, he had his first experience of Balkan music. It was when he enrolled at the University of New Mexico, where he studied Portuguese and photography that Condon recorded most of “Gulag Orkestar” in his bedroom and then finished it with the help of Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost who became a part of the band. Despite everything coming together, beginning to take off, gaining critical acclaim for the debut album it was his first official music video was for the song “Elephant Gun” that launched him to success, which has amassed 10.5 million views. It is also the opening track of the “Lon Gisland” EP.

When Beirut released “The Flying Club Cup” full-length album on October 9th 2007, it reached number 69 in the UK. It was a step in a new direction experimenting with instrument that Condon hadn’t played before. The sound was of a classical pop music sort of variety. In the program notes that were handed out to patrons during Beirut’s performance at The Society for Ethical Culture in New York on September 24th 2007, each song on the album is written to evoke a different French city despite that fact that Guaymas is a Mexican city.

When Beirut perform live, their line up consists of Condon himself on trumpet, flugelhorn and ukelele, and then a band behind him made up of accordion, cello, drums, melodica, electric bass, double bass, trombone, sousaphone and glockenspiel. He insists on using the musicians who have played on the original recordings.

Avis

  • Beirut

Beirut was originally the stage name of Zach Condon however the balkan folk project has expanded at a rate that even the man himself may not have believed and now features five accompanying musicians. There is a richness to the band's live show that is rarely achieved by such limited numbers of instrumentalists yet the group comes together in effortless harmony when recreating their three studio albums.

The crowd demonstrates perfect manners as they stand in complete focus throughout the show and cheer, clap and stomp their feet on the demand of the leader Zach. An early favourite comes in the form of 'Postcards from Italy' with its raw, stripped back instrumental structure really allowing the vocals to shine bright. There is a bizarre cover of 'Serbian Cocek' by A Hawk and a Hacksaw which the majority of the audience do not recognise and take it as one of the band's own. The lyrical honesty continues through 'My Night with the Prostitute from Marseille' before arriving at 'My Penalty' to round off a very emotionally charged set.

  • Beirut is an American folk pop band fronted by founder and brainchild Zach Condon. Beirut blends indie with world music and, due to their natural instrumental talent and unique style, have garnered a whole array of fans from around the world and of differing ages. Beirut himself plays the trumpet, ukulele and even the flugelhorn, which is quite a wonder to see live on stage. The band behind him play everything from the accordion and drums to the cello, trombone, bass and glockenspiel. The diverse talents of the band are incredible and to see such an array of instruments played live was amazing. All the band members came together in such beautiful harmony and Condon’s voice just adds to all the eclecticness on stage. His voice is beautiful live and their music is chilled, easy listening and timeless. Singles such as ‘Nantes’ and ‘Elephant Gun’ were highlights of the show and were met with great audience reactions. ‘Postcards From Italy’ opened the show in great stead and ‘No No No’ ended the show on a high.

  • I've seen Beirut before, so I can compare. This concert on 20th September was excellent, even great, but not superb as other shows.

This time the band was less talkative, there were no stories shared, it felt a bit mechanical, don't get me wrong, the performance was spotless but also a bit too stiff, with less energy and less spirited that other times.

It didn't help the fact that the support music was too I-wanna-go-to-sleep. I was expecting something a support more Balkan and/or folk music related.

All in all I was satisfied, but I've seen way better performances of Beirut. I give them 8/10 for that concert, but I've seen a 10/10 before. I sill have hope to see that again.

  • Beirut are a group unique in their genre since they are mixing indie rock and world music elements creating a amazing and original sound. From Gulag Orkestar which it's still my favorite one, to the Flying Club Cup and the Rip Tide, every album is different, allowing you to discover every time something that you haven't listen to before. The concert should be an unique experience to let you discover music genres and styles that are not the usual ones, sharing something special, dancing and laughing, sure that it's not only music, but it's more part of our world, hidden somewhere, like a rare gem.

  • I've never really listen to these guys before, however my friend is obsessed with them so when she asked me to join her and go see them I agreed.

The show sold out so we got into the venue (The Albert Hall in Manchester) on time and found a good spot.

The show was great. The band showed a lot of energy and even despite very modest lightning delivered a great performance. Me and my friend danced all the way through and were happy to see them playing for over an hour.

Great experience and I'd definitely go see them again.

  • It was amazing to see Zach and his band live. We got mezzanine tickets, but couldn't sit still, so we went downstairs and danced. I made some new friends at the show as well. Parking was super tough, as is the case with the Wiltern(...), so we missed the opener, but it was great finding the parking spot, felt like we'd won the superbowl. I hope to see Beirut again. One of the concerts of 2019, by far. Favorites: No, No, No, and Gallipoli.

  • Great concert!

First of all, Phoenix Concert Centre is neither to big nor to small. I decided to seat in the front row of sofas they have on the balcony and I had a great view; I was able to appreciate the show in its entirety.

Beirut was amazing!! Their lyrics, the unique trumpets in their music, and the lights made their performance memorable. Enjoyed every bit of it!

  • awesome performance, although venue not my favorite --

survival of the fittest for a seat; and, although i have nothing against others' pot smoking, I don't want to be forced to inhale it throughout the lobby of this historic theater.

Worth the 2.5 hour drive to Chicago, although I wish they'd chosen a few smaller venues in smaller cities in the region.

  • This was my first time seeing Beirut live and they were amazing and everything I could have hoped! Some bands sound really great live and I am glad to say that Beirut is one of them. The lead singers voice is very powerful and that comes across more live than it does on recording. I loved this show and will definitely see them again if given a chance!

  • Would have loved to have seen them. Tickets sold out quickly so bought some through viagogo. A month before. Terrible story. No tickets came. I had to chase them. Just got patronising and uninformative responses. Was told day befoe that no tickets coulld be provided. No chance to do anything about it.

Beware when you use people like viagogo.
