Biographie

  • Clean Bandit, founded in 2009, is an electronic quartet from Cambridge, UK. The band is made up of Luke Patterson, Jack Patterson, Grace Chatto and Neil Amin-Smith, latter three of whom met whilst studying at Jesus College, University of Cambridge.

Jack Patterson the then boyfriend of Grace Chatto would record compositions of Chatto’s and add drum beats and electronic effects to the mix. Interestingly, the band’s name Clean Bandit comes from a translation of a Russian phrase, which Patterson said is the equivalent to the English “utter rascal”.

The band is known for their ability to transcend genres, with classically trained members Grace Chatto and Neil Amin-Smith adding impressive compositions from the likes of Beethoven and Mozart. Zane Lowe BBC Radio 1 DJ has described Clean Bandit as making classical/orchestral music accessible to a wider audience, as well as adding notable house elements into their distinctive electronic style with fruitful results.

On the 29 March 2013 Clean Bandit released the song “Mozart’s House” which peaked at number 17 on the UK Singles Chart and was their first top twenty single. The band subsequently made a music video shot in Russia, which became an instant success.

In a groundbreaking BBC Radio 1 broadcast Clean Bandit along with five lead vocalists accompanied the 70-strong BBC Philharmonic orchestra in a 45-minute performance at Media City, Salford, UK. The orchestral instruments replicated the sound of the band’s synthesisers arranged by the composer Joe Duddell under Clean Bandit’s instruction to have no synth content whatsoever.

Clean Bandit’s fourth song “Rather Be” featuring Jess Glynne was released on 19th January, 2014, and reached the top of the UK Singles Chart becoming one of the fastest selling singles of the year. The song features on their debut album “New Eyes” which was released on 2nd June 2014.

Avis

  • Clean Bandit

Clean Bandit completely delivers in their live show!

I first saw them as a support act for Bastille and was so blown away by their performance that I went home and downloaded all the tracks they had out. Not long after that their single “Rather Be” started to blow up and they announced their own headlining tour, conveniently coming to London on my birthday, so I of course immediately purchased tickets.

Based on their music, you could assume that it would be difficult for them to perform live since most of their tracks have guest singers and lots of musical elements. However, they completely pull it off. They bring two amazing singers with them on tour, Florence Rawlings and Elisabeth Troy, who switch on and off singing the main parts for each song with Elisabeth even rapping the Stylo G part on “Come Over”. The ladies are so energetic and their voices harmonize beautifully. In addition to the ladies, Grace sings on “Come Over” and Jack sings on “Dust Clears”. Plus, if you see them in London (and maybe other places but I can’t be sure) there’s even a special guest that they bring out for Mozart’s House (hint hint: it’s Love Ssega).

In terms of the music itself, all of the Clean Bandits are clearly accomplished musicians. Grace plays her cello beautifully and dances the whole time, Neil never seems to hit a bum note on his violin, Luke always looks super serious but kills it on the drums, and Jack is the ultimate multi-tasker switching from keyboard to synth and even to what appears to be an electric oboe at one point.

Their shows are always really upbeat and everyone in the audience dances the whole time. Even before they were a household name, the crowd couldn’t help but dance along. I highly recommend seeing them which shouldn’t be too hard, because they seem to be touring non-stop this year and hitting every major festival.

  • Clean Bandit, one of the UK's success stories of 2014 are taking the live circuit by storm with their unique blend of pop, R & B and classical instruments. Appearing at Bestival in both 2013 and 2014, the band found themselves enjoying a promotion to the main stage at the latter thanks to the whirlwind success of debut album 'New Eyes'.

A large crowd has gathered beneath their feet and the group are ready to delight with their classical sounds. Beginning with the album's title track, the crowd dances below as they are supported by guest vocalists to hype up the festival audience during 'Real Love'. Grace is not a charismatic front woman so the need for an extra hand is needed, although violinist Milan Neil Amin-Smith seems right at home onstage. He is happy to cheer on the fans, encourage singalong and dance along with his bandmates onstage.

Tracks such as 'Sunshine' and 'Extraordinary' dented the UK charts so naturally receive moderate cheers yet the killer track is clearly Grammy winning 'Rather Be'. The single which topped the charts for four weeks sounds fresh onstage and perfect for the sunny afternoon.

  • I saw Clean Bandit at Saint Andrews in Detroit. It was an alright show. Maybe I did not like it as much because it is not my favorite style of music, but I just felt their stage presence was missing something. There were also times in the set where I got bored, and that has never happened to me when the headliner had played. Although, the two lead singers have incredible voices. It was interesting to see the combination of electric, synthesized sounds with the classical violin. The violinist, by the way, did an incredible job. It was not bad, but this concert was probably my least favorite I have been to.

  • First time at the Observatory North Park. Great venue. Also my first time seeing Clean Bandit live. The opening act could have been shorter while he was good it seemed almost as if he performed longer than they did.

Clean Bandit killed it! They sounded fantastic live. The acoustics were really good. The voices and instruments and sampled bits were all in sync. Extremely glad I decided to see this one!

  • Clean Bandit was awesome live, they sounded authentic and real, not like some bands that sound nothing like what you remember when you see them live. They were interactive and got the crowd to sing and dance with them, and they played all of their hits and music that the crowd wanted to hear.

  • Fun show and the venue is a nice space .... Metro .... but the sound was crap. Fine up the front, as I moved around, but from the first elevation it was muffled and out of balance. Plus the venue was stinking killer hot. Haven't they heard of air con?.

    Not a comfortable night.

  • Opener was End of the World a Japenese Pop band and were alright, caught me by surprise as they were wearing masks, but they weren't bad sounding. Clean Bandit made an all around fun night and were spectacular. Rating for this concert as a whole is a 7/10.
