Biographie

  • MSTRKRFT, which is pronounced “Master-Craft”, is a Canadian EDM music duo from Toronto that formed in 2005 by Jessie F. Keeler of Death from Above 1979 and Al-P formerly of the Mississauga, Ontario electro pop group.

MSTRKRFT wasted no time in releasing their first single “Easy Love” in 2006 on Last Gang Records. They released their subsequent single, “Work On You” on July 6th 2006, where in contrast to the “Easy Love” video, the “Work on You” featured animated robots, similar to Transformers. Despite their first album, “The Looks” which came out on July 18th 2006, being of original content, the band has indulged in creating remixes from a variety of other artists from Buck 65 to Death from Above 1979. MSTRKRFT released their first LP and full-length studio album on July 18th 2006 in the United States and February 2nd, 2007 in the UK. As soon as it was finished and released, the duo were already talking about their follow up, and how they had already made a collective decision to take the record in a new direction, boasting a sound of “darker, underground disco and house with elements of American rock music”, said Al-P.

In 2007, a new version of their song “Street Justice” was also released as a single. On the band’s website, Keeler claimed that they were working on a compilation album composed of their remixed tracks. Street Justice was also featured on the RHQ action game, Saints Row 2. “Neon Nights” was also featured on Need For Speed: Pro Street. Their remix for Justices’ “D.A.N.C.E” was featured in the movie, Meet The Spartans, and the song “Work on You” was featured in Dirt 2.

It was on March 17th 2009, that the band released their sophomore full-length on Dim Mak Records entitled “Fist of God”. The album charted at number 14 on the US Dance Charts. The album features appearances of John Legend, E-40 and more Their remix of “Woman” by Wolfmother was featured in the film Lesbian Vampire Killers. Most recently, their song “Beards Again” was featured on the Injustice: Gods Among Us video game soundtrack in 2013.

  • MSTRKRFT

Canadian electronic music wizards MSTRKRFT are, indeed, masters of their craft. The duo formed in 2005 and comprise of Jesse F. Keeler, of scream-rock group Death From Above 1979 fame, and producer Alex Puodziukas, formerly of Ontario-based hipster electro pop group Girlsareshort. The combination of their genre-fading creative collaboration resulted in huge, heavy basslines and in-your-face drum breaks packaged in a slick, club-ready production sound.

MSTRKRFT may be best known for their infectious remixing of Justice's D.A.N.C.E., but it's clear from the rest of their repertoire that they're not a one-trick pony, and know exactly how to craft an anthemic electro track to make people get up and dance.

I saw MSTRKRFT several years ago at the London super-club Matter (now Proud 2), a venue which has speakers embedded in the dancefloor- perfectly catered to their epic, throw-down sound and heavy bass beats. While only having released their first album, 2006's 'The Looks', they played a solid hour-long set, after which it could be guaranteed there was not a dry t-shirt in the house. JFK and AI-P (as fans know them as) responded to the crowd's insatiable energy to result in an epic live show.

With song lyrics like "all I do is party" (in the thumpingly dirty single, 'Bounce'), and searing electronic hooks, MSTRKRFT epitomise bass-driven electronic dance music, and put on a performance that will definitely leave their audience with sore feet in the morning.

  • MSTRKRFT…MaSTeRKRaFT. The Canadian duo may have taken out the vowels of their name to avoid trademark infringement with a tool shop, but they have established a hell of a name for themselves. Duo Jesse F. Keeler and AI-P (Alex Puodziukas) have made and produced two of their own albums, as well as have been commissioned to do remixes by a number of artists, including Kylie Minogue, Katy Perry and Justice.

Seeing MSTRKRFT do their live set at Coachella was indescribable. The crowd was HUGE and I was stuck watching the set from the way back, but once they started it became a moot point. For their entire 30 minute set, everyone (drugs or no drugs), was totally soaking in the music. They spun both original mixes and the best of all their remixes; the best one being their remix of Justice’s “D.A.N.C.E.” The best part about the show was the sick laser show that synced with their music. It completely added a whole extra level of energy that everyone was moving to. By the time their set was over, I was slightly out of breath, almost deaf, and completely wiped out because of all the moving I did to their music.

  • MSTRKRFT, the canadian dance duo that is made up of Death From Above 1979’s Jesse Keeler and Al-P, put together a set of floor stomping dance tunes for their 2009 album ‘Fist of God’, and a live performance of these tracks makes for a dance-filled night of hard hitting synth chords and ruthlessly rhythmic kick thumps. It’s no symphony, but it makes for a cracking night out! Standing side by side behind a desk laiden with laptops, controllers and other gadgets, MSTRKRFT skillfully piece together tracks like ‘It Ain’t Love’ and ‘Bounce’. With a phenomenal light and laser show adding an element of visual stimulation to the whole experience, you can’t help but bounce along with them. The slightly more laid back number ‘Heartbreaker’, featuring John Legend, was the definite high point of the evening; the whole crowd hugely enjoyed singing along with smiles on their faces! No musical revolution but a great night out!

  • Well, gotta be honest, I was really disappointed by the MSTRKRFT show tonight. I expected some of their new electro stuff, which I liked for the first couple tracks, but it was all very much the same repetitive undanceable electro, and when they actually played one of their classics, they removed the danceable disco feel. But props to the opening DJ at Euphoria Nightclub for playing some of the most danceable electronic music I've heard at a club! I had a blast at the beginning!

Oh, and Woolymammoth was pretty fun!

  • Great to finally see them after first hearing about them in 2007. I know their sound has changed, but I expected they'd have their whole analog rig. Instead, the did a regular DJ set and played lots of repetitive beats. They've made such good music over the years, but it's a sadly a weird trend for popular DJs to steer away from what made them famous to begin with.
