Biographie

  • Joywave is an American indie rock band from Rochester, New York. Members include: Daniel Armbruster, Sean Donnelly, Joseph Morinelli, Paul Brenner and Benjamin Bailey.

Joywave was first formed in 2010 in Rochester with Daniel Armbruster on vocals, Joseph Morinelli on guitar, Sean Donnelly on bass, Travis Johansen on keyboard and Paul Brenner on drums. Inspired by 80s electronic music, the group self-released their first single, “Ridge” followed shortly by their first mix tape, “77777” in 2011. A year later in 2012 they digitally released their first EP album (also self-released) entitled “Koda Vista.” The following year they released yet another mix tape entitled “88888.”

In 2013 Joywave collaborated with fellow electronic group, Big Data, for the hit song “Dangerous.” The song reached multiple Billboard charts, including Number 1 on the US Billboard Alternative Chart, and was fairly successful on an international scale as well. Additionally, Joywave’s single, “Tongues” features KOPPS did considerably well with the music video hitting over 300,000 views, and was featured on the video game, FIFA 15. In March 2014 they released another EP entitled “How Do You Feel?” via the label Hollywood, Cultco. The group has also made a number of television appearances, including a performance with Big Data on Late Night With Seth Meyers, as well as festival appearances like Lollalapalooza, Osheaga, and multiple appearances at CMJ in New York City. They have played alongside other indie alternative bands like Little Daylight, Grouplove and Bad Suns.

  • Joywave

I was glad to see Joywave a second time at the Firebird- I adored when they came to the Firebird on tour for their first album in 2015. Before Joywave graced the stage, I enjoyed opening act The Aces very much, so much that I think I'm becoming a fan of theirs.

Now for Joywave themselves. I laughed when four televisions were set up on the stage. They displayed images and went along with the lighting during the show, which was really cool. They performed both new and old songs well. I loved jumping up and down to Parade, Destruction, and Tongues, and also enjoying their calmer songs like Traveling at the Speed of Light and Now.

Joywave knows how to set a mood for each of their songs, which makes their concert experience great and memorable.

They also have a great sense of humor, which is much appreciated. Keyboardist Benjamin Bailey joked about being bored playing the repetitive end of Going to a Place every night, and then guitarist Joseph Morinelli poured a can of beer into his mouth as he played, which made everyone laugh. At the end of the night, the band said they would play 3 more songs as an encore. Frontman Daniel Armbruster then says something like, "This is the part where you cheer really loud," (which we as the audience then did) "maybe chant our name..." (which created an enthusiastic chant of "Joywave! Joywave!") Then he says, "It's just how I imagined it would be", which makes everyone laugh once again.

Overall, the concert was a great experience. Joywave knows how to engage their audience, which always creates a memorable concert for me, and I'm sure for others as well.

While it wasn't as great as their 2015 tour for me, I still had a lot of fun. (I think I still love that experience more simply because I love their 1st album to pieces, and when they re-created almost that entire album onstage, it blew my mind as a younger kid.)

As a big Joywave fan, I give their concert a glowing 4.5/5 star review.

  • It seems as though a lot of really good indie rock/electronic rock bands are coming out of New York; case in point, Joywave. The Rochester band consisting of Daniel Ambruster (vocals), Sean Donnelly (bass), Joseph Morinelli (guitar), Paul Brenner (drums) and Benjamin Bailey (keyboard) have been acquiring a pretty solid fan base sine their inception in 2010.

I really enjoyed the opportunity to watch their live set. When you see them for the first time, you wouldn’t really expect much, because they seem like just a bunch of young teens; however, once they start playing you really get into them. Their music is a bit drum centric, but not too much where you don’t question whether they are an electronic rock band. One of my favorite performances was “Somebody New” because it seemed to be more emotional driven than when you listen to the studio-recorded version. Most important about choosing to see their live show is the chance to witness their chemistry together. They don’t necessarily make a lot of eye contact, but as you watch them play, you can see how perfectly in sync they are with each other; and that’s something that can’t be faked. They feel the music and let that drive their performance.

  • Joywave are yet another indie rock and electronic band to emerge from the capital city of indie goodness, New York. The America band have been performing since 2010 and in the relatively short time that they have been together, have already gained quite an impressive fan following that has seen them reach a Billboard number 1 spot with their hit single ‘Dangerous’. The collab hit was, of course, on the set list for the night and received the most amount of wild applause and cheers from the crowd, a crowd that largely consisted of edgy looking youths and rockers. However, the band proved that they were far from one hit wonders on the night by displaying a whole back catalogue of brilliant tunes, from ‘Tongues’ to ‘Somebody New’ and ‘Travelling at the Speed of Light’. The band blended electronica with indie rock to great effect. They appeared fresh and unique. The lead singer had a distinctly high voice and was able to reach all new heights with his pitches. The instrumentals were spot on and the beats were catchy and unique.

  • Truly awful. I feel terrible for anyone that paid their hard earned money in hopes of seeing this band. They played one song 7 times. Just to be clear; not 7 different songs. They chose a single song from one of their older albums, and only played that song. 7 times. Their whole set was one song. I don't know if they did this as some sort of protest, or as some sort of pseudo-intellectual stunt, or just to be assholes. But they did it, and it was a waste of everyone's time and money. No one thought it was funny, and people were literally shouting from the crowd for them to play something else, and they ignored it. The singer mostly stood completely still, and even sat on the ground for part of the performance. For a lesser known band on a fairly big name tour, they don't seem very interested in garnering new fans, and seem more interested in alienating the ones they may already have. Next time just stay home, guys. Maybe find a day job.

  • "Crocodile Seattle 2/8/19 how"

Everything I was hoping for! Thier "How do you feel now" album was a big influence on me, and it took a couple years for me to finally see them live, and it was worth the wait.

The lead singer has a ton of personality, so brought the audience in with jokes and just being a cool dude. The drummer is incredible. The backup singer/synth genius/guitarist is super talented. I was really looking forward to hearing those fat synths live, and he didn't disappoint. The whole production was well thought our an unique. Definitely see these guys, and hopefully in a headline type show and not just a music festival or something.

  • Saw them for the first time at an all day Dallas concert, Edgefest in 2015. I had already started listening to the music weeks before the concert so that I would know who to pay attention to. Even though Joywave was "low" on the list of performers, I was most excited about them. Their sound was edgy and different. There was a great mix of pop with rock, and indie. Once I saw them perform I was not disappointed. High energy and great personality. I saw them again when they came a year later to HOB in Dallas. Once again great show and I loved hearing all their songs live. I will see them again but am looking forward to new music from them. ❤️

  • They put on an amazing show. Such good stage performance and great sounding set. They were a bit tired from their crazy flight dilemma that they went through getting to LA, but they sounded great. The way they closed the show was spectacular. I was scared they weren't going to play one of their biggest radio hits and they snuck it in part way through another one of their songs. Definitely will go see them again.

  • The venue, Pyramid Scheme was a nice environment, not too big but not too crowded. Opening acts, The Demos and Grandson were polarizing. The Demos were very good, I was able to catch the lead singer’s guitar pick which was really awesome. Grandson was a bit too screamy and I felt that it didn’t fit well with what Joywave’s sounds like. As for Joywave itself. Only one word. Incredible.

  • The Joywave show was amazing. I almost pogo'd my self into a knee replacement but it was totally worth it! They started the show with their song Content and immediately hyped the crowd into a frenzy. Daniels cockiness keeps the crowd on that ride through the whole set. Can't wait to see them again. Joywave never disappoints!

  • Doors opened on time at the Mercury Ballroom and the speed of entry was one of the faster I've experienced. The venue was clean and the sound was great! This lead to an excellent time seeing a band full of energy and excitement. Joywave is truly one of the up and coming bands of our time.
