Biographie

  • RAC, short for the Remix Artist Collective, (formed in 2007) is the solo indie-electronic outlet of André Allen Anjos, a Portuguese-born producer and multi-instrumentalist now based in Portland, Oregon, U.S.

With the assistance of Aaron Jasinski, Chris Crookham, Andrew Maury and Karl Kling, Anjos formed RAC as a project designed to revision and reincarnate the songs of many highly esteem indie artists. Having studied piano and guitar in his native Portugal, Anjos moved to the States to study music business at Illinois’ Greenville College. Key to the approach was not to simply add a heavy, monotonous dance beat, but reinvent the songs, as was clear with RAC’s debut remix of the Shins’ “Sleeping Lessons”, which later appeared on the B-side of the band's single.

As a result Anjos earned remix collaborations with Surfer Blood, Foster the People and Bloc Party amongst a whole host of other revered artists and bands. Subsequently, the music blog and website Stereogum released a handful of RAC et al.’s remixes to date, propelling the producer to online stardom. 2012 marked Anjos’ first release of original material with the EP “Nintendo vs. Sega” led by the single “Hollywood”. Following the EP, RAC signed with Cherrytree Records, and released the "Don't Talk To" EP, which again featured “Hollywood” and the additional track “Let Go”.

In 2014 RAC released a pair of full-length albums titled “Strangers Part 1” and unsurprisngly “Strangers Part 2”, featuring collaboration with YACHT, Katie Herzig, Kele & MNDR, Tegan and Sara and Tokyo Police Club among others.

  • RAC

RAC is the solo indie-electronic project of André Allen Anjos and was originally known as the Remix Artist Collective. Since 2007 André and a selection of other musicians have been offering up reinterpretations of rock, electronica and dance remixes. It is quite a strange concept for anybody who has not heard his music as you may question how a band can exist primarily by reimagining the work of others. However RAC does it in such a creative way that they have gained a large amount of followers in a relatively short career span.

Having remixed work for prolific artists including Kings of Leon, Lana Del Rey, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Foster The People and Bloc Party to name a few means the setlist is consistently varied with a little something for everybody. The live outfit is well considered and features some incredibly skilled musicians as well as two brilliantly varied vocalists. 'Hollywood' is a high point for the crowd as a whole before they showcase the original works including 'Cheap Sunglasses' alongside a reworking of 'Something Good Can Work' by Two Door Cinema Club. This band is very much at the cutting edge of innovation and it will be exciting to see where they go next.

  • For the longest time, I was not a fan of remixes, so it took me awhile to discover Remix Artist Collective, aka RAC; in fact, I really only became a fan when I heard their original song “Cheap Sunglasses.” Once I heard the song, I decided to check out more of their songs on soundcloud, and then eventually found myself looking for their live shows.

Their shows are about as energetic as their music, they are also leaps and bounds better live than their studio versions. Instead of everything sounding electronic, you have an actual drummer, you have an actual guitarist, and damn does it make for a better sound. I think this partiall has to do with the fact that the songs that they remix already have an electronic track, so adding more live instrumentation just takes the songs to a whole different level. One of their most notable remixes that they did live was Temper Traps’ “Sweet Disposition.” What was really great was that it was like the track was playing and you were witnessing just guys jamming to the track. Essentially, it was a perfect “seemingly unplanned but really was planned” jam session, which really, leaves no room for complaints.

  • They performed with Big Data, Karl Kling, and Filous.

RAC was great. There was a few of my favorite songs they didn't play (mostly we belong), but that happens to me at every concert, and the did play all their big hits. It was an interesting approach on stage, where Andres played his guitar and had 3 singers on tour with him, along with a drummer, to do the live performance. The singers were effective. Liz had lost her voice but tried her best--I do wish she had been well because RAC's songs with female vocals are some of my favorites.

The other the performers that night were stellar. Filous opened... pretty incredible to have a 1st act whose songs I know and like. Karl Kling... he had nice lights on his drums. I was looking forward to Big Data too, and they did not disappoint. The music was great as expected, and the video and dance moves on stage made for an epic night.

  • Truly an amazing show live! From remixes and popular original songs, to covers and new songs, they played it all. A great live sound with live singers, guitar, bass, drums, and synth. RAC is a truly talented group and it showed. My favorite songs of the night were "Something Good Can Work," "Back of the Car," and "Let Go." These also were the crowd favorites. I would highly recommend this show! Grab your tickets now!
