Wild Child hail from Austin, Texas, USA. The sextet are known for their breezy, ukulele led indie pop and have released two studio albums since their debut in 2011.
Is anyone else surprised that these guys are the first band to ever make an impact with the name Wild Child? There must be some long forgotten glam metal band that had a minor hit in 1987 with that name; it’s just way too good to pass up! However, any good name must have a good band to go with them, and with these Austin natives, they have a truly excellent one.
The band was formed around the songwriting partnership of Kelsey Wilson and Alexander Beggins. They were both struggling musicians on the Austin indie scene and they met while touring with another act, called The Migrant. Beggins, despite being an accordion player by trade, had bought a ukulele with him because he could pass it around the tour van with ease and when he and Wilson realized that they’d just been through nasty breakups, they began writing songs together
They realized they had some real chemistry and by the end of that tour they pretty much immediately started recording the albums worth of songs they had. They got some friends of theirs in to fill out the sound and Wild Child were born. The album was released independently in 2010 and it immediately got the attention of blogs like The Hype Machine while the band started to tour.
By 2013 the band had got the attention of indie rock icon Ben Kweller, who ended up produced their second effort “The Runaround” after he left the band a voice mail asking their permission to do so. The album was received very well, allowing them to tour with the John Butler Trio and play Bonnaroo festival for the very first time to a crowd of over 5000.
This is a band nearing the top of their game. They’re going to do some incredible stuff in their time and it’s going to be worth sticking around to see it. Highly recommended.
Plus d'infoSeeing Wild Child in concert is like visiting old friends. You may be in a crowd of 20 or 200, but the effect is still the same: a high energy, toe tapping, butt wiggling celebration of life, love, and the pursuit of amazing music.
Wild Child is an example of Austin's finest, with a style similar to Head & The Heart, The Avett Brothers, Of Monsters and Men, but with their own flair and welcomed take on the already over saturated Folk scene. If you're lucky to get to venue they play early enough, Kelsey Wilson (violin, lead vocals) might even adorn you with some blue war paint.
Since the release of their last album The Runaround (produced by Ben Kweller), Wild Child has been touring the country (and soon internationally), playing on Top 40 radio stations, as well as appearing on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.
If they come to your town, be sure to go see them! You are guaranteed a fantastically fun time!
To me, some of the best things about seeing a band live are watching them enjoy playing together and when they are obviously appreciative of their fans. Wild Child had both! You could tell that these guys had a blast on stage. And the look on their faces was a mix of gratitude and astonishment -- very obviously appreciated everyone being there! On top of all of this, they were great musicians. The lead female sings who plays the violin/fiddle was the star in my eyes. She was beautiful and so was her voice. Incredible -- I'd definitely recommend these guys and go see them again when they are in town!
GREAT GREAT GREAT live performance!!! My boyfriend was not really looking forward to seeing them live because he said they were "too mellow," but boy oh boy they were anything but mellow live! They completely rocked!! I haven't seen many live shows myself, but my boyfriend is a musician himself and has played a lot of shows and been to countless live shows overy the last 40 years. He said it was one of his favorite shows, and he has already looked up when they will be close for us to go see again! This is a group you do NOT want to miss seeing live! They were AWESOME!!!!
Wild Child was enjoyable, but personally really didn’t like either of the opening acts. Would have skipped if I’d known about the two other acts kicking the evening off in order to avoid disliking the music for two hours, but there’s always a bit of “risk” going in time to hear the openers. Sometimes the risk pays off, sometimes it doesn’t. So really no complaints about the band itself (great music, fun stage presence, etc.) but the set-up of the show was definitely not my favorite. That’s just personal taste though! I’m sure some people enjoyed the structure
This show was absolutely amazing and everything I hoped for!!! Strong vocals/instrumentals an intimate setting... what more could you ask for? They sang some oldies and newies, as well as some freshly recorded unreleased tracks. The crowd was SUPER into it, and she even had us all sit while she sang an acoustic version of one of their songs. You could REALLY see the passion for what they do in their body language and enormous smiles. I would DEFINITELY go see them again in a heart beat!!!! <3
This is my first review on here. Do I get a cookie?
Wild Child has some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. This band is so tight and every member puts them over the top. There is no weakness! Kelsey's voice has so much soul and it seems so effortless. It's also great not having to pay much to see a band that is this good. When music starts back, hopefully next year you had better catch this band. You won't be disappointed!
Fabulous performance last night at a great Venue in Vancouver. Wild Child kept the audience captivated for the entire show, mixing old with the new, fast with the slow and clever commentary in between songs. If you know the band you know the lyrical talent and the majestic voice, its even more stunning live. Treat yourself and go see them whenever they are near you, you wont regret it.
Wild child has pretty amazing music, but hearing them live was even greater. Every member of the band is super talented and adds to the performance. Kelsey and Alexander are super cute on stage, and interactive with the audience. I was able to meet Kelsey and take a picture with her. She is super sweet! Next time they come in town I will defiantly go see them again.
Shows at the bluebird never disappoint. WILD CHILD is a great band. Very soulful and it was great to see the venue packed. A good crowd and I was able to watch from the floor. This band live is amazing to see. The bluebird venue is perfect for them intimate and amazing at the same time.
Wild Child was an amazing concert! They at each one of the most personable bands I've ever come across. They really and truly love what they do. They keep the crowd so entertained and their openers were amazing too! They love their fans and this fan certainly loves them!
