Biographie

  • Indie Rock band; Local Natives were formed in the Orange County of California. They formed in the year 2005 and their current line up includes 5 members.

Everything this band does is a result of close agreement and collaboration between the individuals from songwriting down to the artwork. The band formed while its members: Kelcey Ayer, Taylor Rice and Ryan Hahn attended high school and later joined by Andy Hamm.

The bands members are close and in 2008 they moved into a house together in which they began working upon their musical connection. The line up consists of Taylor Rice - guitar, vocals and bass, Kelcey Ayer -vocals, keyboards, percussion and guitar, Ryan Hahn, guitar, keyboards, mandolin, vocals, Matt Frazier on drums and as of 2012 following the departure of Andy Hamm; Nik Ewing is the bass player for the band.

The debut album of the band "Gorilla Manor" received near perfect reviews, receiving a positive from the BBS and an 8.4 out of 10 on pitchfork media. The album gained the band the number 3 spot in the New Artist Chart. The album itself was named after the house the band mates shared while living in Orange County together.

The band have been compared to: Arcade Fire, Fleet Foxes and Vampire Weekend. These comparisons were drawn after the band played nine shows at the 2009 SXSW festival in Texas.

2011 Andy Hamm departed from the band due to unresolved differences.

As of 2014 the band has released "Gorilla Manor"and "Hummingbird".

  • Local Natives

I got really interested in Local Natives after their second album Hummingbird came out on Spotify. Their falsettos and harmonies are out of this world. I was completely blown away when I first heard their song "Ceilings;" I remember stopping what I had been doing in awe of the beautiful noises that were reaching my ears. (If you haven't heard that song, I highly recommend it.) Now imagine hearing their music live... I never thought that I would, but I was fortunate enough to do so twice: the first time at Lollapalooza last year, the next time at my college. Both performances were amazing, but there was something about the second performance that really made me appreciate them even more.

I'm the type of person who likes to go to really upbeat and energetic concerts, but I didn't know what to expect to happen when I saw Local Natives. The first time I saw them was probably the chillest concert I've been to because the crowd was super relaxed. However, the concert at my college ended with me drenched in sweat due to jumping crazily with random people. So, I guess it's a gamble: depending on what type of crowd you end up with, you may experience something amazing that's chill or crazy or both.

For the longest time, I couldn't believe that my school had actually gotten Local Natives to come, but sure enough, I stood front row jamming out to them - from the beginning of "Breakers" to the end of "Sun Hands." Their second album is a lot more laid-back than their debut, however they played a nice mix of songs from both. One of the many things I love about Local Natives is that they switch off lead singers in multiple songs, which I did not pick up initially when I listened to their audio recordings. The band is so passionate and they really know how to get the crowd moving. Taylor, one of the lead singers, commented on how even though this was a sober crowd, this was the most crowd surfing he had even seen at any of their concerts! They were really personable, and they sounded even better live. If they happen to want to come back to my school again, I wouldn't be mad. PS: Try getting your school to invite Local Natives to perform there! There's a higher chance of you getting to meet them after the show.

  • I had the pleasure of seeing Local Natives in San Diego on the second day of their Sunlit Youth tour and I can easily say it was one of the best nights of my life. Doors opened at 7 but I arrived at 4 to wait in line to be assured a front row spot which thankfully ended up working out. The opening act, Charlotte Day Wilson, came on at about 8:20 and Local Natives around 9:20. The venue was completely packed by the time Local Natives came on. Taylor, Kelcey, Ryan, Matt, and Nick all did such an awesome job. Their energy was electric and they sounded just as good as they do in all three of their albums. The crowd was so into it too, at some points you could hear everyone singing along. After the show we waited across the street by the parking garage in hopes of seeing someone from the band come out for photos. We knew it wouldn't be right away but we were willing to wait. After some time and asking around we finally made it outside the back by the tour bus. Kelcey ended up coming out to meet some of us fans. He introduced himself to everyone (as if we didn't know who he was) and was nice enough to take some photos with people and sign some merch. As it was only a small handful of people I was lucky enough to get a photo with him and have my vinyl record signed by him. Unfortunately no one else from the band came to greet people but Kelcey was so incredibly nice that I didn't feel too bad for not meeting anyone else. All in all, it was a once in a lifetime experience that I'll never forget. I wish them luck on the remaining of their tour, those guys know how to get down. Their music will forever live on with me.

  • Indie rock band Local Natives formed in 2005 and have been critic favourites since their smashing debut album ‘Gorilla Manor’, for which they received killer reviews. The band is made up of a group of five close friends who formed the group whilst living in Orange County in California, USA. The band may be relatively unknown, partly through their fault as they’ve released a disappointing two albums, but their music speaks for itself. The band certainly go for quality over quantity: their music is a brilliant fusion of surrealist electro and alternative pop. They are like an underrated Arcade Fire or a catchier Alt-J. Their music is the front runner of their live shows, with subtle lighting and visual effects topping off the overall performance. The band themselves are passionate and talented musicians, with a keen ability to get the crowd moving and worked up. There was even a spot of cow surfing that caused the people at the front of the crowd to go absolutely crazy. It was such a high energy and fantastic show all round.

  • California indie darlings Local Natives certainly took their time when it came to releasing their debut album yet it transformed them into critics' darlings and suddenly they were the hottest band in town to go and see. This premis still remains today, Local Natives live show always comes highly recommended by fans who consider them to be one of the most exciting indie outfits to have broken out in a considerable amount of time.

The psych folk influence shines this evening as they achieve an atmosphere of surrealism and fragmentation without the use of any real visual aids. The way in which they whisper notes and manipulate their voices to match their guitars is all kinds of strange and seems to noticeably chill the air within the venue. It is clear to see why they have gained early comparisons to the likes of Vampire Weekend and Arcade Fire as Local Natives stand alone in their own right due to the uniqueness of their sound and live performance. Definitely ones to watch in every sense of phrase.

  • I've been listening to Local Natives for a while and this was my third time seeing them perform. I can't say enough great things about the band as people and performers. Their music is so amazing seen live, if you're a fan of them before, you'll like them even more after seeing them. They do a great job of mixing old songs with new. They also have a nice balance of talking during the show. Even the crowd was really great which is usually hard to say for most bands. You can tell they absolutely love performing and even more so that they love performing together. It's obvious that they are great friends and that makes the experience even richer! If you're a fan and haven't seen them perform, you must!

  • I saw them at phoenix concert hall, Toronto. I enjoyed the show, but found the stage was too small, sound sytem lacked, muffled voices. They had to stand and not move because the stage was so small. I saw them at the Danforth and they were 10 times better there. the Danforth's sound sytem is cleaner and louder, making it able to hear each voice, so clear it made that evening worth seeing and left me spoiled.I haven't been to the phoenix in so long that I forgot the size of the place...the place was ok buy not what I am used to . They should play the sony centre or massey hall when it reopens. PLEASE

  • A sold out show on a Monday night in Chicago? You bet'cha!

Second time seeing these guys and it's hard to argue how tight they are as a performing group. The harmonies are beautiful, the song writing so thoughtful.

Their stage presence and energy are infectious - you want to move the entire time. When they announced Who Knows Who Cares as their last song of the set, the crowd went nuts and carried that energy through an extended sing-along of the chorus. There was no way the guys were not coming back out for an encore.

One of my favorite bands making music today!

  • local natives is an awesome band and i have been listening for quite a while now. most of the people i know (i am in my late 50's) havent heard of them. i would love to see them again. i know little scream was the headliner and i really like little scream too, but, this is one of those shows where i bought my ticket mainly for the opener act and got a benefit of seeing/hearing another good artist as well. i think local natives wouldnt have any problem booking as a headliner act, i love the music. thank you local natives

  • This was the Local Natives first live show in Orlando. It was overwhelmingly clear that this crowd has being craving to see the Local Natives since their first album in 2010. Amazing showmanship and extremely humbling to see the band members in AWE from seeing such a lively and exciting crowd. They gave it their all and the crowd gave it back.
