Biographie

  • Born Ruffians are a band hailing from Midland, Ontario, Canada who formed in 2002. Since their debut, they have released four studio albums along with two EP's, and become one of the most exciting and intriguing bands on the famously fertile Canadian indie rock scene.

Coming together in 2002 as Mornington Drive, the band spent the next two years writing, rehearsing and making their tentative steps into their local rock scene in Midland, Ontario. However the band didn't truly get started until 2004, when they collectively moved to Toronto and self-released their debut album “The Makeshift Yellow Catastrophe”. The response to that record was so positive that it secured the band a record deal with the hugely respected British electronica label Warp Records, but singer/guitarist Luke Lalonde, drummer Steve Hamelin and bassist Mitch DeRossier still decided it was high time to rethink the band

The band's first release on Warp came in 2006, and saw the band, now renamed Born Ruffians, release the single “This Sentence Will Ruin/Save Your Life”. 2008 saw the release of the album that the band consider to be their true “debut”, “Red, Yellow & Blue”, and ever since then, the band have remained one of the most acclaimed and respected groups of their time. Loved by critics, fans and their peers, they have toured with the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Hot Chip and Caribou, appeared on the succesful British T.V show Skins and toured the world over, with a large amount of their cult following stemming from their famed live shows. This is a band made up of artists in the truest sense of the word, and for that, they come highly recommended.

  • Born Ruffians

Going back a decade now, when you think about the wave of bands that came to characterise that crossover between the indie rock sounds of the time and the post-punk revival that had come just a little earlier, they’ve really had mixed fortunes since; Franz Ferdinand for instance, have been from the Brixton Academies of the world to festival headlining and arenas, and then back again, whilst the likes of The Hidden Cameras and Tokyo Police Club have continued to fly under the radar since. Born Ruffians, from Ontario, Canada, have followed the latter path - they were Mornington Drive, back then - and continue to make new records. Their most recent, Birthmarks, was released last year, and met with a solid critical reception; they went on to tour it extensively - for a description of their live show, imagine the slick nature of Vampire Weekend’s gigs, but with a little more aggression, a little rougher in sonic terms. A run of UK shows in September of last year confirmed that their fanbase in this country remains alive and well, and it’ll be interesting to see how they fare next; they’ve managed to navigate the changing scene better than many of their contemporaries of a decade ago have.

  • Indie rock is a pretty hard genre to nail mainly due to the fact there is nothing particularly characterful about it. I guess it means it is also seen as a blank canvas to successfully put your mark on which is exactly what Canadian four piece Born Ruffians have done.

The group has had a great masterclass in creative indie touring with the likes of fellow Canadian Caribou, Hot Chip and Franz Ferdinand and of course they will have taken some of these lessons and adapted them into the live show. There is definitely an ambience to their performance which borders on shoe gazing at times. The acclaimed 'Red, Yellow & Blue' album creates the majority of the setlist tonight and is a huge crowd pleaser. They do however try out some new material on the audience which goes down really well before reverting back to the ever-popular 'Hummingbird' and 'Needle' for a slick encore which delivers everything the attendees could want.

  • I've loved this band for years and never had the chance to see them perform...and then Vancouver happened.

They did such a fantastic job! And I must admit, I was completely fan-girling the entire time. What I thought was really cool though was the fact that after they finished and started walking out, the drummer and keyboard player were both sweet enough to stop and let me compliment and hug them.

Great show, guys. And thanks for making it so easy to find concerts, SongKick.

  • What a wonderful band and super chill. They were even better live than their recordings. I saw them at Intuition Ale Works in Jacksonville, FL and I was so surprised at the low turnout. There were like 30 people there so the band talked to us and it felt super personal. They are a MUST SEE!!

  • one of the best concerts i've been to a while. I didn't even get there early but i got such a perfect spot: along the stage right in front of Luke Lalonde! i like the venue, not too big and in a great area. They are so talented and it was great seeing them in their home country

  • Everything about this show was fantastic. Born Ruffians had great energy and they sounded really good, too. A bonus was the opener, Fleece, who have good chemistry and put on a fun performance. If you have a chance to see either of these bands, highly recommend doing so.

  • I highly recommend seeing a Born Ruffians concert! I was finally able to see them live and I was not disappointed. They played a good mix of new and old songs. They've got a great stage presence and I can't wait to see them again. The concert was over too soon...

  • The Sinclair in Cambridge, Massachusetts is always a great venue. Intimate and welcoming. Not a bad spot in the house. We were watching from the mezzanine level and the sound quality was great. The band was definitely out to perform and did not disappoint!

  • Great Band, really good stage presents. Good mix of both new and old songs. Opening acts are worth seeing as well. Always love seeing them live and dancing my ass off.
