Biographie

  • Born October 31 1941, Paul Simon is a folk and rock musician born Newark, New Jersey, USA and raised in Queens, New York, USA.

John Simons father was a bass player, college professor and bandleader who went under the name 'Lee Simms' while his mother was an elementary school teacher. Simon has a Jewish heritage which he gains from his parents.

After performing in a production of 'Alice in Wonderland' Simon began singing alongside Art Garfunkel, they sang whenever they could most notably school dances.

Simon Paul has many musical influences, such as Jazz, folk and blues musicians. While singing with Garfunkel their idols were the 'Everly Brothers' and they would often mimic them when singing as they would use a close two-part harmony.

In 1957 Simon Paul and Art Garfunkel released a song called 'Hey Schoolgirl' which reached no.49 on the pop charts, they did this under the name Tom and Jerry which was given to them by their label at the time - Big Records.

The two had known success before as their song 'The Girl for Me' became a hit in their local neighborhood, the song was written by Simon's father and has been copyrighted and placed in the Library of Congress.

in 1964 Simon and Garfunkel were signed to Columbia records and were given a contract to produce an album, it was decided that they would now be known as 'Simon and Garfunkel'. Their debut release 'Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.' was not successful and is considered to of have been a flop.

1965 saw Simon release hiss first solo LP 'The Paul Simon Songbook' this came about after Simon moved to England to pursue a solo career, he built up a name for himself by performing at coffee houses where he met Kathy Chitty, she would go on to inspire Simon to write various future songs.

Simon eventually went back over to the USA after 'The Sounds of Silence' from his LP with Garfunkel reached number 1, when it was heavily requested on radio stations. Over the next few years, Simon and Garfunkel went on to record 4 more albums together.

'Bridge over Troubled Water' was a very successful album and got nearly all perfect scores as it incorporated genres ranging from rock, R&B, gospel, jazz, world music and pop. Rolling Stones gave the album a clear 5 stars. In 1970 Simon and Garfunkel however split up.

In 1987 Simon won a Grammy award for album of the year and record of the year a year later. This was for his album 'Graceland' which was a solo album. This album also got near perfect scores.

Simon Paul is signed to Columbia, Warner bros and Hear Music.

As of today Simon has 13 albums under his belt and 12 Grammy awards alongside various other awards such as being the first person to receive the Library of Congress Gershwin prize for popular song in 2007.

  • Paul Simon

Paul Simon is one half of America's most iconic songwriting duo Simon & Garfunkel. The musician has been recording and touring solo since the band split in 1970 and has released a selection of critically acclaimed material himself. Often beginning his shows with a long and extensive set of his own work including 'Dazzling Blue' and 'Mother & Child Reunion', he expertly commands a stage with the narrative of his works.

Supported by a minimal yet talented live band, he stands centre stage with guitar in hand and captivates every member of the audience with beautiful renditions of 'Questions for the Angels'. The audience applauds rapturously as Simon humbly thanks them and explains it is their devotion that keeps him on the road at the age of 70.

As his first set comes to a close, he returns to excited screams and cheers as the audience know he will now perform some of his most iconic works. 'The Sound of Silence' and 'The Only Living Boy in New York' are poignant and emotive after all these years, and clearly mean so much to so many members of the crowd.

  • The first time I caught Paul Simon performing live was way back in 1991 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

I remember it like it was yesterday, I was in high-school and my Dad and I drove into the city on a Saturday evening and we had seats about 20 rows up directly behind the stage.

The view out over the stage and arena was fantastic and during “You Can Call Me Al,” the Garden began it’s characteristic bounce along with the 18,000 people who were all dancing in unison. The feeling was electrifying and the energy surged through all of us to the stage where Simon was so blown away that he asked us all if we wanted to hear the song again. The overpowering cheers that filled the vast arena sufficed for a “yes” and he and the band launched into the classic for a second time right then and there.

It was Paul Simon at his best, giving the crowd what they wanted, when they wanted it, and it has kept me going back to see him time after time.

  • In short, a great concert!

Why? Because this 75 year old legend played vividly for more than two hours. He was accompanied by very talented musicians and together they did what they were made to do: They made some magical live-music.

Hits, many, many hits. Of course, this man is definitely not a one-hit-wonder. And yes, many of the songs played he played many times before. But how they played and played with it, how Simon and his band slightly transform each song and have fun doing so... Never a dull moment.

His new material fits the set very wel. Great sounds, beautiful songs and in a way traditional yet very modern Paul Simon tunes.

  • The show was absolutely incredible. Mr. Simon was very talkative, insightful and friendly. The stage show was tremendous with so many amazing musicians and singers sharing the stage; right down to the lighting, sound and set up.

Definitely one of my Top 5 concerts. I was thrilled to be a part of it all; especially being the farewell tour.

  • Great show. That band is just hot. Bunch of different arrangements for a lot of tracks. Didn't do much of the old Simon and Garfunkel stuff - which was fine with me. Paul has a great body of work and he did some from across the whole history. Disappointed he didn't do Hearts and Bones or Graceland but a great setlist nevertheless.

  • Fantastic show. Paul Simon seemed to be in a very good mood and he sang and played great. World class. And his large band made a very ambitious show possible. It never got boring because there were so many different styles and variations that it was always fresh. I go to see many shows and this was a spectacular one. I’m SO impressed

  • Why would you need a review for Paul Simon? He is the master songwriter, musician, poet... it does not get better than this. His band is beyond comparison. Paul Simon's understated brilliance takes you on a journey with each song. He is not young so see him while you still can. A once in a lifetime experience.

  • Very possibly the best concert I have EVER had the pleasure to see! Paul Simon still sounds as good as ever. The band is fascinating to watch and hear with all of their different instrument. They are more like a mini orchestra that a typical band.

Thanks for the great memory Paul!

  • Great show. He and his huge band played for 2.5 hours and covered his biggest hits. His voice sounded great, though I could tell he was struggling a bit with the high notes. More than that, I've seen aging stars phone in a show, but the show was really high energy and he was giving it his all.

  • It was a great show. Simon may be a little past his prime but such a great songwriter, arranger, musician. His songs brought back a lot of emotions. His multiple encores were great. There were a few merely average moments during the show but the rest was performed at a very high level.
