Biographie

  • We Are Scientists is a New York-based indie rock band that formed in Berkeley, California in 2000 and consists of Keith Murray and Chris Cain.

We Are Scientists members Keith Murray and Chris Cain met in 1997 at Pomona College, along with original guitarist and vocalist Scott Lamb.

Their style is inspired by live performers such as The Rapture and David Bowie. The sounds and artists that influence the recorded material of the band include varying acts such as Brian Eno, Velvet Underground, My Bloody Valentine and Fleetwood Mac.

After their move to Brooklyn, New York in 2001 the band began recording their debut album on November 10, 2001, and 'Safety, Fun, and Learning (In That Order)' was released in April 2002 but unfortunately failed to make an impact on the UK album charts. However, due to relentless touring and an aid from the blogosphere, the band achieved a commercial break with the follow-up 'With Love And Squalor' charting just outside the top 40 in 2006.

To promote their next album the band made their second appearance at the Reading and Leeds Festivals, performing on the Radio One Stage and introduced Max Hart who would be providing guitar and keyboards at live shows, in preparation for a UK tour in November. Days before this tour was scheduled to begin, drummer Michael Tapper unexpectedly quit the band meaning Gary Powell and Adam Aaronson had to step in.

'Brain Thrust Mastery' went on to be their highest charting UK album, peaking at #11 helped by support from Radio 1 DJs at the time Jo Whiley and Edith Bowman. The next album 'Barbara' was a commercial miss after WAS split from EMI Records and released this LP on PIAS Recordings. It fell outside the UK top 40 due to poor promotion although critical response for this album was overall positive. The 2014 album 'TV en Français' re-entered the top 40 at #36 and #5 on the Indie Charts. The band took to the road in September to promote its release with Surfer Blood, releasing an exclusive joint vinyl which featured new song 'Distillery'. In April 2018, the band released their seventh studio album "Megaplex," featuring singles 'No Wait at Five Leaves' and 'Heart is a Weapon.'

  • We Are Scientists

Keith Murray is a stage God. From the moment they kicked into 'This scene is dead', he danced, whirled, spun, and jumped around the stage delighting a rapt audience. His energy was infectious, even the more 'just here to observe' members of the audience couldn't help but edge a bit closer and just to make sure we all involved ourselves in his gig, Murray jumps off the stage and whirls around and through the audience, giving everyone a photo opportunity. The crowd deliver Murray back to the stage in a spontaneous crowd surf and he doesn't miss a note.

There's no shortage of the famous banter between the two leads either, picking a nautical theme to entertain the islanders of Pompey. These guys are so funny but the music is seriously good: alongside the banter they deliver catchy riffs and punchy lyrics, the whole delivered perfectly, timing spot on. They race through full versions of classic hits 'chick-lit' ''nobody move ' 'I don't bite' 'it's a hit' to name less than half, plus a sprinkling of songs from the toured album Helter Skelter. Of the latter 'headlights' was the obvious hit that they'll still be playing next tour.

These guys are true Professionals: during the encore they impromptu 'can't lose' not on the original set list but because someone has requested the song on Twitter and they deliver - beat and note perfect.

Then into 'After Hours' with the very apt lyric:

"And if we have to go now,

    I guess there's always hope,

Tomorrow night will be more of the same"

Finishing with the very harmonious and melodic 'too late' from the new album, they leave us feeling that we've been involved in something very special, invited into a We Are Scientists private party, and already nostalgic for a repeat of the good times and sad in the knowledge that it will be a while before these guys are back.

offstage, after all the excitement, the sublime Murray waits to greet people in a plain white T, affable, charming; signing, having photos taken - as relaxed as if he's in his own back yard.

I think the man is a God.

Note: We Are Scientists have been touring for months - I saw them at Koko in March this year. The show is as fresh as if they were on the first date.

  • A We Are Scientists show is a rare breed... They fill there set with Classics, Deep Cuts and New tracks like any proper rock band should. Mixing deftly through their whole catalog in a way that makes you feel like you are listening to your very own We Are Scientists mix tape.

The band performs with an amazing energy and after seeing them 6 times I can say they bring it like that every show. From leaping into the audience to play the final few tracks or inviting the "in the know" fans on stage to rock out before the encore. We Are Scientists really just make you feel like you are as much of the show as the band is, and the trick is you really believe it.

The real difference to We Are Scientists, what really makes them stand apart from every other rock show you have ever seen, is the banter (that word is doing this an injustice) between Keith, Chris, and the audience. It is like watching a pilot for the funniest sitcom you have ever seen. They might be the two smartest rockers in America and it shows, making comical references to what their own songs mean, or breaking down the conjugation of a request from the crowd (that sounds uncool but it's not they are rock stars everything they do is cool) The band just feels like a perfectly timed whose on first routine that is different every night. With an album every 2-3 years since they first found success in 2005.

We Are Scientists have grown a solid catalog of songs that range from their early and more apprehensive tracks, through the mid 2010's where they have really hit a stride of what defines todays indie rock.

The bottom line here is We Are Scientists preform shows with an energy and comedic presence that should not be missed.

  • We Are Scientists hail from California, although spend most of their days in Brooklyn, NY.

Their unique brand of post punk and energetic indie rock translates well in a live setting. It makes for a very fun show, a lot of dancing, whatever the setting. Mostly, they play the hits. But change the setlist around every night to make it interesting for us, and for them!

They have played larger shows in Arenas supporting bands such as Muse where they get a chance to bounce around the stage even more, acting like kids placed in a sweet shop! They obviously love doing what they do. Don't worry though, across North America and Europe they are often found playing a variety of venues including very small clubs ranging to larger venues.

Another treat for fans is that We Are Scientists often make the effort to play places that other bands may miss, meaning you often won't have to travel hours to catch them live. One of the most brilliant aspects of a We Are Scientists live show isn't their energetic, guitar driven, danceable music, but their comedy. Yes, comedy.

They are renowned for being a great laugh when on stage, interacting with crowd members, sharing funny stories or generally just joking around! This comes naturally to them and isn't rehearsed, although they do come up with their own music videos and have even had a small series of shorts aired on MTV ('Steve wants his money'). All of this can make a We Are Scientists show a night to be remembered.

  • You can expect many things from a We Are Scientists show, although one of those things is not science. If you want a band that rocks but talks thermodynamics between songs, this isn't for you.

But from the moment they strut on stage (and strut they do), your only concern is going to be 'do i dance, jump around or do a combination of both?' Expect banter, some crowd surfing and some of the loudest audience sing-a-longs you can get.

From underground basement venues to festival main stages, these guys know how to get a crowd going. And yeah, they are pretty smug about that, but thats also half the appeal. The other half being that aside from the music, these guys know how to tell a joke. Banter about the weird local pubs? Why not. One time most of the chat between songs centred around Keith's (the singer) inability to remember to wear a belt, he then spent most of the show hiking his jeans up with the looming 'will there, won't there' be a jeans round the ankles moment. Fortunately for him it didn't happen.

Also, during their first headlining UK tour they covered the well known Boys II Men song 'End of the Road' and now, many, many years later someone well always yell for that song. It's then that you know that this comedic trio have had fans hooked for years, so why not see why everyone (and myself) keeps coming back to them.

  • Incredible!! I saw them once before, and this time was a little different. They played during a club, so the concert started late at 2:30 (in Spain people do everything so late...) Because it was a club they didn't talk much and I missed the funny banter between them, but Chris said a few things in Spanish which was greatly appriciated by the audience. Since it was at the club also all the songs they played were pretty upbeat - they asked if the audience wanted a calmer song, but most people said no. This was probably why they didn't play Textbook, which I was a bit sad about. But their energy was great and they really adapted well to playing at this venue during a club. During the last song Chris came down into the audience with his guitar and people hoisted him up onto one guy's shoulders where he finished playing the song - it was so wild!! After he gave everyone around him hugs which was so sweet and I got one too! The drummer also came to the edge of the stage and I got to shake his hand. It was a wonderful experience, they are really fantastic with the audience and seem like great guys and very humble. I had a blast, hope to see them again soon!

  • Sorry for my English, I am a French fan who happily went to the We Are Scientists concert yesterday in Lille. It was INSANELY good. I mean seriously, they rocked out the boat (because yes, we were on a boat. In Lille!!) pretty well. They tried to joke with their audience, which was really fun. The interaction with their audience even went as far as for them to go and sing and play their instruments while searching a path through us. It really was great. So much energy !! After the show I even had the possibility to discuss with their touring drummer Keith Crane who was seriously amazing, and open minded. That was an excellent moment.

I really didn't enjoy the band that went before them though(and from what I've heard, many of other people in the audience didn't either) so I don't know if Lovepark was chosen by WAS, but they're doing a terrible job warming up the place. Hope they'll find a better replacement later on.

Now, if you want to go to one of their concerts, prepare yourself: you're going to laugh, to sing, to dance, to rock, and maybe even share a laugh or two with them. They truly are the coolest musicians I've ever met.

  • You can always guarantee a great night with WeareScientists and Tuesday at the Brudenell, Leeds was no exception. They are one of the best live acts you will ever see. Their banter is hilarious and their energy amazing. Playing a great mix of old material which they seamlessley blended in with songs from "Megaplex" it was a good old singalong! Having been to see them so many times I've lost count, they never disappoint. Also, they must be the most approachable band around - always happy to chat, have photos, sign and sell stuff and on this occasion, sort out merch problems for my daughter! Am also convinced they have the secret of eternal youth, I swear Keith and Chris look younger now than when they started out! Not to be missed!

  • Wow! This was my first time seeing We Are Scientists - despite listening to the band for the past 13 years. I don't understand why I waited this long to see them. They were simply amazing, much, much, much better than I had expected. They are funny, entertaining, slick and so danceable. I didn't stand still for a second during the set.

The band also met fans at their merch stand afterwards, which always helps the overall experience, particularly as they are very nice guys. I'll definitely see them again!

  • I have been a fan of this band since Myspace was the thing. I have finally seen them live and it was wonderful. They are hilarious and goofy. Their music is spectacular and they really enjoy playing for not just their fans but themselves as well. The lead singer manned the mercy booth for most of the night, making him readily available to converse with fans.
