  There’s some one hit wonders who attain that status purely on the basis that they managed to produce one, hugely popular track in their own right, and just couldn’t match it afterwards; others end up being indebted to some other cultural event to launch their songs into the stratosphere. In the case of The Rembrandts, it’s both; ‘I’ll Be There for You’ is a catchy enough pop song, with a neatly sentimental enough message, that you have to think it could well have been a hit in its own right, but of course, we all know it for one reason and one reason only; the cultural phenomenon that was Friends. So huge did Friends become in 1995, when its second season was airing, that there was ultimately a huge media backlash against it; before that happened, though, The Rembrandts became household names thanks to their signature track, which topped the U.S. charts for eight weeks and hit number three in the UK. After a brief split in 1997, Phil Solem and Danny Wilde reconvened in 2000 and have toured ever since, despite the fact that their interest in recorded output has waned; they haven’t been over to the UK for a while, but a slew of summer festival dates in the U.S. as recently as 2012 proved that they can still deliver feel-good, laid-back rock shows, with that classic track still provided with pride of place on the setlists.
